The trick two point conversion at 3:00 is a thing of beauty. Chicago sort of had an ace in the hole on that play with TE Zach Miller. Miller played QB in college and ran an option offense. He was a very good option QB. He ran that option perfectly on that play. He knew if the DE ran out to Trubiski, he could just run it in himself untouched. He held the pitch till the DE committed to hitting him and then just casually flipped it to Trubiski like he has done it a million times...because he has. Its too bad his career ended a week later with the horrible leg injury.

Saw another comment saying the wind was terrible and the attempt would’ve been too risky
@justinbombach98732 ай бұрын
There was wind and it was a 48 yard attempt, so it isn't easy. I've heard that this kicker later missed a 46 yard field goal in the same game, so he may have missed this attempt too. The holder is at the Browns' 38 yard line - that is where the ball would be placed if the field goal is missed. By punting instead, they forced the Browns onto their own 3. I've also heard that on the two drives before this, the Browns had back to back three-and-outs, so it's very likely that they will get great field position again. Finally, doing the punt when it isn't expected means that there is nobody to return it. If the Browns expected a punt, they could have fielded it at the 3 yard line and ran several more yards.

The issue is often risk vs reward, the plays working because they're unexpected, and the player with the ball is left out in the open unprotected. If you do it too much your opponent catches on and then instead of a cheeky play where you fake a handoff and score with your QB your QB runs away from all his blockers and gets blasted into next week by an alert defender.

I would like to have seen the 2013 fake spike between Dallas and Detroit. That play faked out even his own team. Final moments of the game in hurry up offense the Lions get tackled inside the 1 with seconds to spare. Stafford rushes up to the line motioning the intent to spike the ball and stop the clock. Once everyone is set Matthew notices that everybody (including his own line) is just set for the spike and not really looking to engage. In that moment, instead of spiking the ball and stopping the clock, Stafford hikes the ball and reaches out over the goal line for a TD. It was just great situational awareness by a player who took the initiative to read between the lines and make something of it. I LOVE plays like that.

@ballplayer4323 жыл бұрын
I think they didn't have a kicker so they punted the ball
@killercomedytv11 ай бұрын
It was a 48 yard punt, there are very few people in the world who can kick consistently even tho 48 yards is a pretty standard kick but is by no means a guarantee. The reason they didn't kick a field goal is because the wind was constantly changing direction and quite fierce making the field goal extremely risky. So they opted to give them the ball back on the 5 yard line with a punt giving them better field position on defense. If they kicked a field goal and missed, the other team could have caught the ball (if it was in play) and ran off for good field position or a touchdown. Even if they didn't catch the football off a field goal attempt they would still have a kick return to get better positioning. Also because of how far back the field position was if they tackled someone in the opposing endzone after giving the ball to the other team they'd get 2 points for what's called a safety and then they also get the ball back on a kick return. It's a bit confusing but it's like math meets chess. The best anology I can come up with is gambling, kicking the field goal with the wind as it was is like playing the slot Machines and banking on a jackpot with no knowledge of the outcome vs playing Poker where it's still a gamble but you have a general idea of where the game is heading and your chances of winning.
