The dirtiest hit on a QB not shown, that’s one of the worst intentional hits happened in 1986 between the Bears and Packers. Jim McMahon threw the ball on one play, and about 10 seconds later, Packers defensive lineman Charles Martin came over, picked up McMahon from behind and slammed him to the ground. McMahon suffered a torn rotator cuff as a result and was sidelined for the rest of the season. Martin was ejected from the game and suspended for two games.

You cannot simply stop your body in mid dive and you can't read people's mind to know if they are gonna slide or not. What if Flacco kept going and Alonso didn't hit him cause he thought he was gonna slide? Flacco would be in the end zone. Alonso did his job and stopped him. He slid late right into Alonso as well. These slides need to be evaluated and given better clarity.

this the most under-rated comment on here. THAT's the reason you had to have the pendulum swing waaaay the other way with protecting qbs. Knocking out the other teams starting QB and ushering Steve DeBerg or Mike Tomczak into the game was the shortest path to victory and if it was a division rival? even more lasting effects. 15 yards and 25K fine didn't mean shit if Brady was in a cast or Drew Brees was concussed, the defense would accept that result every time. That mentality is why the QBs are treated like glass today. The NFL had no choice.

That hit on Burrow was absolutely clean. Terrible call. The sheer violence of the shot doesn't nullify the proper technique. This used to be called “good defense”. Now it’s dirty play. You sack the quarterback, you could be looking at a personal foul. It’s becoming so impossible to play defense, football will eventually look more like basketball with tic-tac fouls and zero shutouts. I would be more agreeable with the rule changes if they started calling targeting on the ball carriers. But, they need to “protect their stars“, and that does not apply to any defensive player. I know I am wrong about about player safety, but in a few years, this will no longer be American Football, just “Pass Skeleton”.

As a person that played QB, and who got knocked out on the first play of a game once(don't remember anything after that first hit), I hate seeing good hits being flagged. Most qbs need that first good hit to get their blood flowing, you might say. But then again, my playing days might have been extended if they had today's rules in place back in the 70's. But, I always looked at it badge of toughness to take a hot and get back up as though nothing had happened. Seeing the other team look at you with a look of disbelief as you get up and walk back to the huddle, always made me smile.
