I think it’s cause it’s really hard to pin them to their end zone since if a kick off or punt goes just so much over it becomes a touchback. Also most of the time they can just throw the ball away if they’re gonna get tackled.

Intentional safeties are a lot more common in the CFL. Due to the little differences in rules and strategy, if you’re in a position where you’d be punting from your own end zone, it’s usually worth giving up two points to push your opponent back 30+ yards.

Here's a weird question - In OT, the team that gets the ball first can win with a touchdown but if they kick a field goal the opposing team has the chance to match the FG or score a touchdown. What if the team that posses the ball first gives up a safety to the defense? Does the team that scored a safety win the game automatically or does OT continue?
@Chasingrail6 жыл бұрын
gm346553 OT would continue
@JayShep766 жыл бұрын
@@Chasingrail I'm sorry, but OT would NOT continue in this case. OT rules allow both team to possess the ball unless the following occurs: A touchdown by the team who received the ball first or by a defensive score (ie. Turnover return for a touchdown or a safety). So in gm346553's setup, the game is over in the favor of the defense.

@gm3465536 жыл бұрын
Yeah I actually found the full NFL rulebook on the NFL website and since I'm very bored at work I found all mentions of the word safety and Jason is right, here's how the rule is written: "Both teams must have the opportunity to possess the ball once during the extra period, unless the team that receives the opening kickoff scores a touchdown on its initial possession, in which case it is the winner, or if the team kicking off to start the overtime period scores a safety on the receiving team’s initial possession, in which case the team that kicked off is the winner. If a touchdown is scored, the game is over, and the Try is not attempted."

When the ball is in the endzone and the defender has the chance to pick it up and run out of the endzone why would he possibly kick it out? Is it out of injury reasons?
@hansonjiang72927 жыл бұрын
There's the possibility when you try and pick up the ball you don't actually pick it up and the defense picks it up for a touchdown(happens often. some players try recovering a fumbling and advancing it, but fail to pick up the ball first. it's like taking your eye off the ball before catching it and running). Also, a lot of times there's literally no chance you're making it out of the end zone, and you've just accepted the safety, regardless of what you try and do
@Rowgue516 жыл бұрын
Many such plays are happening on fourth down anyway. So even if you recover the ball and manage to barely get out of the end zone, it's going to be a turn over on downs and you're giving the other team the ball right on your goal line. You're almost handing them a touchdown. And even on the plays where it's not fourth down there is normally lots of chaos on the play with bodies flying everywhere, and the likelyhood that you're going to be able to pick the ball up cleanly and run it out are slim to none. Unless it's a guy with nobody near him that can calmly pick up the ball with a realistic chance of doing something with it, the smart play is almost always to concede the safety and not risk handing the other team 5 more free points.

That'd make it nonsensical tho lol. It's not much of a "safety" for the offense if there's only a 1 point difference between that and giving up a touchdown. A safety would actually be the worse option since it entails a loss of possession. Also it'd be weird if the defense could score "almost a touchdown" points-wise without ever possessing the ball
