What's cool about watching the halftime show after seeing this is that Phyllis' dry read of the intro to the Morton segment is a little halting and timid, but when the halftime show comes around she nails it perfectly.

Where do you find this stuff?! I don't expect any secrets to be revealed, but you're a treasure for finding this treasure. I went to Maui in 1980 and was having dinner in our hotel's restaurant one night. My gaze went across the room, and noticed an exhausted looking Brent Musberger eating. This was about a week after the iconic Game 6 of the NBA Finals when Magic subbed at center for Kareem. Brent noticed me looking at him, and he returned his attention to the entree. I was not about to bother his getaway after covering the NBA playoffs. Could never understand why the sports-viewing public seemed to grow tired of him in the next couple of decades.

I came across this segment while working on the network tape recording of the 1977 Week 13 Redskins at Cardinals game. It was there in place of the last part of the 2nd quarter and for sure wasn't actually what the public saw that day - just happened to be on the original network tape. Thinking it was pretty cool, I just decided to post break it off and post it separate.

@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 Redskins 26, Cards 20. Jim Hart threw three picks even though his team outrushed the 'Skins. Somehow, Hart had 156 passing yards on seven completions! I love Pro Football Reference.

Bless your heart, Phyllis George, talking about your dog and doing a quick dry read. Adding the wife's name to her lines for just a little shout-out to make her a real person. Susan. Rest in peace, Phyllis.

This is pure gold. As a "process" guy, I love peeking behind the curtain. I always wonder what it's like to be on studio set in between the pregame and halftime, and halftime and postgame. I know they watch the games, but they also have to get ready to talk about them, so it's not all playtime. This little segment is a wonderful slice of history, and is especially valuable because it's a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the greatest sports studio show in broadcast history.

During the second quarter of the December 10, 1977 broadcast between the Redskins and Cardinals, the feed switched to the NFL Today studio while they were prepping for the halftime show. This was taken from a network tape of the game, so I seriously doubt the actual public saw this footage and instead saw the rest of the second quarter. Thought it was interesting and different enough to showcase it.

Oh yeahhh. We saw a live backhaul feed of the Majik Packers at a player's private home awaiting their fate, watching a Vikings game. (This may've been Christmas 1989...Billy Martin's death?) When the Vikings made the play to eliminate the Packers, we clicked over to the Majik feed in time to see and hear ”EFFING Carl Lee you little BUNDLE OF STICKS!!!" 😂 Think of how that would fly today 😮

Phyllis George was a very interesting person. She was not just a Sportscaster, but a Miss America, First Lady of Kentucky, Entrepreneur, Author, Actress and briefly worked at CBS News, TNN, Pax TV, QVC and HSN. She emceed the Bluegrass Ball and a Salute to Presidential First Ladies. She was not only married to Businessman, Basketball team owner and Governor John Y. Brown, she was also briefly married to Paramount’s Robert Evans, mentioned briefly in 3:16. You’ll never see anyone like this again. RIP Phyllis

Watching this made me appreciate Irv Cross more. You can tell he was underutilized on this show. He could've added a lot more analysis if they'd let him. I watched this every football Sunday as a kid, so seeing this really blows me away.

There's an intro to the CBS NFL Today that is hard to find. It might be from 76 or 77, but it features a hilarious number of cheap shots that I'm sure the NFL doesn't want to be seen. I remember Staubach getting stepped on and someone getting a vicious clothesline.
