A Day With G Rhodes can shut down Hopkins, Julio, OBJ, Evans, Michael Thomas, and more, but he’s always had problems with Adams and Marvin Jones Jr. from the Lions. I honestly think it has something to do with those guys being in the same division. When you play a team twice a season, year after year, you’d think the edge would go to the defender, but it doesn’t in Rhodes’ case.

But yeah I know what you mean. Floyd was a beast and it’s a shame how his career ended being young and on his prime. But Rhodes about two three years ago people where saying that he was a bust being a 1st round even compared to Morris Claiborne when he was in the Cowboys.

DB in NFL is one of the hardest positions in sports. You have to be physically dominant to keep up with some fastest guys in world and you gotta be crazy intelligent to read the WRs going full speed to predict exactly what they are gunna do. On top of that league will favor the WR 9 out of 10 times. Love seeing one the best breaking down how they do it.

Played WR in the NFL myself and I'm always getting in arguments about DB technique with DB on every level, and I'm glad to see that Xavier Rhodes confirms many of the things that I tell and coach DBs. Most high school DBs are coached to have a somewhat narrow base with one foot slightly back, but I tell coaches and players all of the time that THIS IS NOT A GOOD STANCE. I'm glad to see more and more DBs in the NFL are understanding that a wider base with both feet square is a faaaaaar better stance, and X Rhodes here demonstrates that. Rhodes also has an excellent one hand bump WHICH IS THE EXACT TECHNIQUE THAT I RECOMMEND TO DB COACHES AND PLAYERS AT EVERY LEVEL! The two handed bump only works against low level talent, mainly in high school and low level college. Highly skilled WRs in Division I college and the NFL are far too good to be bumped with two hands. A highly skilled WR can burn you for a TD if stick two hands out and try to bump him, so I see many DBs in NFL almost totally abandoning the bump altogether and giving most WRs free releases. Having played WR for 20 years of my life I can assure you that THIS IS AN ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE MISTAKE, which I still see most NFL DBs still do, and they certainly pay the price for it. You can get away with not bumping many of the bigger and slower guys, but the smaller athletic guys like Antonio Brown and Odell Beckham Jr will eat you for lunch!!! IT IS ABSOLUTELY MANDATORY THAT A DB PUT HIS HANDS ON A RECEIVER AS MUCH AND OFTEN AS POSSIBLE. There is simply no way to guard a highly athletic NFL receiver unless you are able to slow him down by putting his hands on him. However, NFL receivers train themselves to beat the bump, so you can't really bump WRs with two hands, BUT YOU CAN USE ONE SINGLE HAND TO THROW HIM OFF OF HIS TIMING AND HIS ROUTE, which I see Xavier Rhodes does exceptionally well. His bump technique is absolutely excellent, nearly flawless. I always tell DBs to simply shoot with the inside hand and aim for one side of the chest, near the shoulder. This prevents receivers from building their momentum and speed, this little bump with one single hand will turn a 4.3 receiver into a 4.5 receiver every time, which will allow you to easily stay with him. It's funny because I've always told everybody that with this kind of technique you can guard a guy like Antonio Brown, because you could nullify much of his speed and quickness with quick one hand jabs, but I've always said the only guy this technique might not work well against is Julio Jones, because he's so big and strong that a single hand bump probably wouldn't be enough to slow his momentum at all, so it would be like he's getting free releases all day. And the fact that he's also really fast makes guarding this guy nearly impossible. And it's funny that X Rhodes picked out Julio Jones as the hardest guy to guard BECAUSE HE'S USING THE EXACT SAME KIND OF BUMP TECHNIQUE I'VE BEEN RECOMMENDING TO DBs FOR YEARS. The only thing I don't like that A Rhodes said was to "get his feet hot" by doing a subtle jump when the ball is snapped. Nearly every DB in the world is taught this and it feels good to them, BUT THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT RECEIVERS WANT BECAUSE IT GIVES US A CHANCE TO MISDIRECT YOU BY MAKING YOU JUMP IN THE WRONG DIRECTION. Played WR in the NFL myself and the only DB I've ever seen understand NOT TO DO THIS is Darelle Revis. Revis understands that it's much better to keep your feet planted as long as possible because it naturally keeps you from going for any fakes and being misdirected. DBs don't know that every receiver in the world is hoping a DB starts to move his feet and take that slight hop when the ball is snapped and 99% of DBs do exactly what we want them to do, because it feels more comfortable and natural for them, but actually creates a big advantage for us WRs, an advantage that many/most WRs actually depend on to get a clean release off the ball. DBs think that "getting their feet hot" actually helps them, but they don't understand that this actually helps us (WRs.) Rhodes would probably have a better time against a guy like AB though if he studied Darelle Revis film and learned not to take that hop step right when the ball is snapped, because this little hop step gives a guy like AB a chance to misdirect him with a good head and shoulder fake. If Rhodes learned this he'd probably cut AB's reception in half, because he already has excellent hand technique. I've also gotten into a lot of arguments with pro DBs about the width of their stance. I always tell them they should stand wider (like Deion Sanders.) A wider stance does many things: 1) Prevents a DB from going for fakes because it allows them to look directly at the WRs waist instead of a WR's shoulders, 2) Gives them a lower center of gravity, 3) Prevents them from false stepping [which nearly all DBs do, even in the NFL,] and 4) it puts them in their naturally most athletic position to be able to explode laterally. [Once again DBs need to look at Darelle Revis and see how he gets into his wider foot position right when the ball snaps, but does not "hop step" like X Rhodes does.] But most DBs still prefer the more narrow stance, because they were taught to do that since high school and even before. It's the "traditional" DB stance because it only works well on the lower football levels, but I believe in learning "high level" techniques from the very beginning. The only problem with the wider stance is that it prevents a DB from being able to jam with two hands - WHICH A DB SHOULD NEVER DO ANYWAY!!! Two handed jams only work against terrible receivers, usually on the high school and lower college levels. So DBs get away with exaggerated two handed jams in high school, and maybe in college, but THAT BULLSHIT WON'T FLY IN THE NFL AGAINST HIGHLY SKILLED RECEIVERS. DBs should abandon the two handed jam, even on the high school level, because it creates bad habits and bad technique that will get them burnt when they eventually face high level competition. Although the two-handed jam can be very effective on the lower football levels (especially high school,) it creates life long bad habits that most DBs never break, AND IS ALSO COMPLETELY UNECESSARY. The one-hand jam (using the inside hand) is effective on any level, even and especially the NFL, and you almost never need to throw the two-handed jam on any football level. One day soon I'm going to make some videos demonstrating these techniques and start training some DBs and WRs for the college and pro levels. Got a lot to do first but I'll get around to it someday soon.
