And in overtime, Valdez-Scantling ran backwards for a - 4 yards pass. I thought it was going to be more of the same we saw throughout the season, with the WR's not playing well enough to win a Super Bowl. But Rice made a play on that final drive, and Hardman made the game-winning catch.

The three biggest contributors to the loss were Shannie's play calling, Wilks' play calling and the O Line. Pretty sure that it would have been a complete blowout for the 49ers if Reid and Spags swapped places with Shannie and Wilks.

Kyle's lack of running the ball yet again is what costs the team. He kept putting the QB in terrible situations on 3rd down because of his play calling. He needs to be roasted for that. I am sick and tired of him getting a free pass.

As a Niners fan who watched the game, I feel your disrespectful of the Chiefs effort to get back into the game the way they did. Yeah we got away from riding CMC in the second half - because his leg was bothring him. And yes Greenlaw was a huge blow for us, and a big part of Chiefs coming back - but they came back because their defence was also playing lights out, otherwise we would have had a blow out. I look at this game as two teams very equally matched going head to head and in the end one team won by 3 points late into overtime - great game, great advert and in the end the NFL got their favoured team winning it. Could have gone either way, one ball bouce here or there was the difference - the punt drop was probably the big game swing though. Hopefully it shuts up the Purdy haters for a bit as he played a really good game, made the few pass opportunities the Chiefs gave him and did not gift them any big plays. Our defence played lights out for 90% of the game but the two blown coverages where KC got big pass plays and even the OT winning touchdown along with the dropped punt are the lowlights. Thats what happens when your tired though. Next season I think our defensive secondary needs a lot of work and draft picks put into it and if we can get two players to improve our O-Line just a bit we can run it back, Purdy has ice in his veins and the rest of the guys have a few years in them yet.

@@glenn4530 only one of our main players is due for Free Agency and that's Greenlaw the rest are still under contract. I would expect Greenlaw to want to stay if possible and our cap looks fine due to not having to pay our QB yet. We should be just fine.

The O-line for the 9ers definitely could have been better. Chris Jones burst through untouched to stop something like 3 TDs. The 9ers score a TD in OT if someone blocks Chris Jones for a second on that third down. Either the 9ers center couldn't read the defense and see the blitz coming or Purdy couldn't, but someone messed up multiple times and can definitely play better.

From what I saw from 49er interviews, their team didn’t understand how the new overtime worked. Which is totally on them. The chiefs reviewed those rules weekly since training camp they said. So that one is completely on Kyle and the coaching staff and goes to show that attention to detail is everything. You gotta know the rules of the sport you play at the highest level.

My big issue, other than the mistakes people bring up, is that SF’s O-line failed Purdy. Multiple unchecked/unblocked rushes, no pocket to set in, and Purdy scrambling for his life on most plays. Pass blocking helps a QB to be great. Lack of pass blocking creates a fly by the seat of your pants game. Lucky Purdy didn’t get injured, but it needs fixed.

Most 49ers players including Purdy, McCaffrey, Jennings, ... played well, but not great. Deebo Samuel, Bosa and Kittle underperformed, well, Kittle except that one important 4th down conversion. The 49ers DBs covered well over most parts of the game, but didn't look good in a few important situations.

I still think Shanahan is a great coach, but it's tough to argue against the take that "he can't finish" when he's been on the losing end of the only 2 OT Super Bowls after having the lead at halftime. As the other commenter already said, a lot of great coaches never break through. Marv Levy comes to mind. He coached the Bills in the 90s. Made the 4 consecutive Super Bowls and lost, and he never won the big one. Jim Harbaugh is another. He was with the 49ers for 4 seasons and got to 3 NFCC (made 1 Super Bowl and lost it).

CMC OPOY and we don’t use him on multiple downs but chose to throw the ball. Leaving the Niners in 3rd and long. Elijah Mitchell was the starter 2 years ago go run him. Mason averages 5.2 per carry run him. Hold Chiefs to 3pts before half then hold after half get the ball throw 3 times punt him get it back 3 passes punt.

As a 49ers fan, I'm hopeful for the future, I believe in the team still... but even with the mistakes along the way, I fully put this on KS and Wilks... the playcalling in OT, IMO, was just not good enough. I'm not saying it was horrendous, but it wasn't good enough. That said, we'll be back in the hunt again next year.

What you fail to look at is how Chiefs soldout to run and for a large part had Niners in negative yards on early runs. The pass on early downs was effective because they dared Brock to beat them. With Greenlaw in game, Chiefs were limited in crossers and averaged less than 3 yards per play. Kyle said that he chose to take ball first in OT because it would set team up to get it first in sudden death. A theory I heard was because defense had just faced Mahomes with two more injures to hold them to 3. They needed a breather. Face it. The road goes through KC like it did NE with Brady. KC had just beat Ravens whom said had best defense and was SB favorites. But they could not get over AFC championship hurdle that has plagued them. So why we riding Shanahan so hard? Why are we not riding Bills and Ravens hard for not finishing job to keep KC out of Super Bowl? 🤷🏻🤔

Why do we need to blame someone for that loss. That was a team loss. Each person played well, very few played great. Kyle Shanahan made 2 mistakes on the first 2 plays of each drive of second half. Purdy did what Jimmy G couldn't. That was the most impressive game by the defensive front. But things like a punt hitting an ankle, a fumble, holding to take it to 2nd and 12 instead of 3rd and 2, injuries to key guys, it's quite simple, neither team played perfect, and you can't give Mahomes a chance to come back.

Purdy is good enough to win Superbowl, but not when head to head with the best QB. Botched punt, Holding at 6yd line in OT by back-up, missed extra pt all helped sink 9ers.

I don't put the blame on him, but Purdy has to be a better QB than Mahomes if he wants to win SBs. That's the standard. Dude knows how to put big games away. You knew he was going to win it if Purdy didn't get in the endzone in OT. You knew it. He should be the one analysts talk about every time, not CMC, not anyone else. It should be, how do we stop Purdy. That's how everyone views Mahomes in big games. He's the X factor, like Brady, like Montana.

Am I the only one that's ok with taking the ball to start OT? My issue is the inability to get a TD from inside the 10. If they get a TD on that opening drive, it forces KC to score a TD and a 2-pt conversion to win or PAT to tie which gives the 9ers the ball needing a FG to win.

@0:50 The 49ers don't have a lot of big name free agents to resign, but they're also currently estimated to be ~$12 million OVER the cap. They are currently only $4 million over the cap, but you have to sign rookies, so they have to make room for that. They're going to need a couple of bigger names to restructure.

Sometimes the media HAS to find the narrative. I actually like that they didn’t, they played high level ball but got beat in over time but a future HOFer. It happens. Could Brock have taken more control, maybe but he’s the 3rd youngest QB to play Super Bowl, he didn’t mess up, he didn’t fold. It’s just a high level game and sometimes the guy who is levels above does what he was born to do. Well played both teams.

49ers played really well, except on the scoreboard. They were getting field goals when they should have scored touchdowns, and throughout the game they weren't able to get a significant lead. Seven points lead at halftime against Mahomes and that KC defense is simply NOT ENOUGH. And receiving the kickoff in overtime was a terrible decision.

Not saying Shanahan didn't make his mistakes but it still comes down to can you beat the greatest QB of all time in his prime in a league set up to favour him? Look at Belicek, how many SB's has he won yet Brady has gone 2 years and now he's out of a job.

Defense and special teams lost that game. A blocked extra point, a fumble on a punt return, allowed KC to drive down and tie it in the 4th, then allowed them to drive down and get a TD in OT.

the biggest take a way is that the Chiefs held all game long and never got called for it. There was 5 non calls for the 9ers and 21, yes 21 missed calls on the Chiefs. 3rd superbowl for the chiefs where the refs played in the huge role. The officiating has been a huge issue all year and yet no main stream media will bring it up.

Didn't run well when up, interior OL allowed pressure in key moments, missed kick, fumbles, defence allowing big plays. It's a lot of things that happened and that's just the game.

Trashing Shanahan is silly. Andy Reid "couldn't win" until a few years ago. Now, he has three. Being a good coach means you have your team in the mix. Yesterday, it was a tight game, and the other team had Mahomes and Kelce. They DID have opportunities to put the game away, but credit to the Chiefs D as well.
