I am from the Chicago area but Super Bowl XX Bears vs. Patriots was an ordeal for me. My mother was a Bears fan and had been looking forward to the Super Bowl for weeks. She died January 21, 1986, 5 days before the Super Bowl. I went to her funeral the January 25, 1986, the day before the Super Bowl. I watched the Super Bowl with my mind reeling with grief. I may have been watching for her sake. I will never forget those events. I hope everyone appreciates their family members.

We know we will all die one day, but the pain comes in the unexpected shock of the loss. Sad to hear your story, your mom being a bears fan, and knowing how much joy she would of had seeing them dominate this game. It was a long time ago, but you always miss them. My mom and I are very close, she's 62 now, and I'm dreading that day when she's gone.

I am sorry for your loss. I was one of the people tossing confetti out the window on LaSalle street for the parade afterwards because our office on the 11th floor was the highest window that opened (we were in an older building as the bank across the street had no opening windows and the city actually gave us the supplies and called when we were to start tossing stuff out the windows - I always had thought those things were spontaneous). I remember the whole city was excited and then a week later the Challenger disaster happened and everything deflated.

It's interesting to go back and watch this game as a Bears fan through through today's eyes. Things that struck me: 1. Sad that as a Bears fan we have to go back more than 30 years for a Championship. 2. Some of the hits from back then are brutal and would get a serious personal foul now. 3. New England actually started off with decent momentum, and could have easily been up 10-0 were it not for one dropped pass. 4. Lots of calls went in favor of the Bears, like the Dennis Gentry catch at about 1:30 that really wasn't a catch. 5. The defense started off a bit slow, but once the defense got going though, it was beautiful to watch. Richard Dent was the rightful MVP 6. The Patriots were not about to let Walter Payton beat them, that was a clear part of their game plan. They however seemed to give Suhey a pass, and forgot to stop Willie Gault.

Couple things. 1. This is the best defense ever. Best team, maybe. But definitely the best defense. 2. Thank god for instant replay nowadays. In the 3rd quarter the fumble the Patriots had is very close, and in today's game it's probably ruled incomplete. And then the Gentry reception down to the 1. He wasn't even close to being in, both feet were out. 3. It's a shame Payton didn't get a piece of the pie this game. Not only did they give the ball to Suhey far too often, McMahon and Perry were handed touchdowns on the goalline. Payton deserved a td. 4. God damn Willie Gault is fast. 5. Too bad this wasn't a rematch of the Bears vs Dolphins. That would have been an epic game.

MichaelMick eh I would rank the 2013 Seattle and 2002 buccaneers defense over this unit.

I'd rank you as not knowing anything about football. Mentions these two teams and not 2000 Ravens. And no, neither of those defenses are even near the '85 Bears. For now until the end of KZbin, you've created many laughs.

MichaelMick lol that is your opinion. I was even debating whether or not I should add the 2000 Ravens defense but I though the two I mentioned would be enough to drive through your skull.

- A Bears-Dolphins matchup might've provided for a more competitive Super Bowl. Bears probably would've still won, but the Dolphins could've made things a bit closer than this Patriots squad did.

Tempest Jay you're wrong bud. The 2002 Bucs weren't too far off but the BEARS had the edge over them. As for the 2013 Seahawks they had a better secondary than the BEARS but the BEARS had a much better linebacker core and D-line

Meh... He had 22 carries, many of which were in the Red Zone. He had his opportunities. I've never really understood this view. The Bears were trying to win a Super Bowl, and you can't take your foot off the gas at any point. Coaches can't worry about who gets touchdowns and who doesn't.

@bradleyboyer9979 Many carries in the red zone? You need to go rewatch the game, because you're way off. NO... Payton did NOT have his opportunities!!!
@bradleyboyer997910 ай бұрын
@@millypoo7713 lol, I've watched the game probably over 50 times at this point. He absolutely had red zone opportunities, especially early in the game. He didn't have it that day. He had 22 carries for 64 yards. In the infamous words of a Herm Edwards, "you play to WIN THE GAME!"
@millypoo771310 ай бұрын
@bradleyboyer9979 Well, obviously you don't need to play to "win the game" when you already have the game won leading 37-3 late in the 3rd quarter. The Patriots had ZERO chance of coming back that late in the game down by 34 points. Bears possession late in the 3rd quarter... Instead of giving the ball to Walter Payton 1st and goal at the one yard line... Ditka calls a play for William Perry to get the ball. He barrels in for a TD. A running play with Payton following Perry blocking for him would have been unstoppable and Walter would have gotten his TD. The game was a route at this time and Ditka screwed up big time by not calling a play for Payton 1st and goal at the one. Again, the Patriots had ZERO chance of coming back and the priority should have been getting Walter a TD. Yes, earlier in the game I can see your point and Ditka needed to call the plays best suited to win the game. But when it's 37-3 late in the 3rd... you get Payton his TD. In my opinion, Ditka messed up. No matter what you reply, I will NOT change my mind about this.

The game was so different back then. Jim McMahon had a 56.1 completion % with 15 TD, and that was considered good. Their #1 receiver, Willie Gault, caught 33 balls and 1 TD. It was all about defense and the running game.

Jim McMahon was not really considered good. This was at the same time you had Marino, Fouts, Montana, Elway. The Bears were unusual for the time. They had probably a top 5 defense ever, and a top 5 running back ever. They went into that Dolphins game favored by 2 points on the road with Steve Fuller at QB. It wasn't about McMahon.

Since then, I never missed any free broadcastet Superbowl. To sad, that Premiere (an early PayTV Channel) grabbed the rights for some Years in the 90s. No offense necessary. Greatest defense in history of game. Tomzack, Fuller, Daffy Duck could have won as QB for whole postseason where Bears won 91-10, with opp yds at 433 for 3 games! The whole season was 46 Defense with (to run down clock) touch of Sweetness. My regret is not having the Dolphins as our rival. A win over them would've been tougher and more climactic. 47:40 is the biggest play for the Bears that not many people realize. Leslie Frazier was the best corner that the Bears had. It's what made the 46 defense work. If your corners can't cover one on one then you get exposed. Leslie Frazier would end up having career ending ACL tear because of that "reverse". This weakness wouldn't come back to bite until the next year against the Redskins where Mike Richardson just got torched by Art Monk in the playoffs in the divisional round.

Lindsey Summers Truth. my son argues with me, that the Seahawks LOB is better. Statistically, over time, they are better. But for one season, the ‘85 Bears were the best defense ever to play. They only gave up more than 20 points 3 times that whole year. They held 13 teams to a touchdown or less, registered two shutouts during the regular season, two in the playoffs (never been duplicated), and only gave up one touchdown in the SB, with a total playoff score of 91-10. It’ll be hard for anyone to ever replicate that in today’s rule-heavy, pass-oriented league. This was the most dominant team in modern football history.
