Crazy to think that this game ended up being a deciding factor to who had home-field, eventually leading to who got to play the Titans, and who had to face the Jags. Had this game ended differently, maybe we would be hearing about the heavyweight match-up this weekend of New England traveling to Pittsburgh for the AFC championship. Every game matters.

As I am looking in the comments section as a steeler fan, no one is commenting that the Steelers made a ton of mistakes. 1. We didn't double cover gronk 2. Ben shouldn't have thrown that ball 3. Plain bad coaching. U don't fake a snap and expect the patriot' s defense to be confused. As a steeler fan, this wasn't a steal. I thought we had this won in the 4th quarter. Mistakes come and go, but crucial mistakes stay forever. Good game Pats. Hope to see u in playoffs. This is the best game we've played all year. Keep your head up steeler fans.

Goal line doesnt matter, goalline matters when you are a runner and have already caught the ball. If you are going to the ground with a catch and it bobbles at all, they treat as an incomplete pass, meaning you NEVER had control of the ball. It is a bit of a weird rule, but to be fair, there are many instances where that rule makes complete sense. Its a situation to situation thing.

PATRIOTS 3-2 there is no way to change the velocity and direction of the caught pass to outstretch it across the goal line unless you are in total control of the ball. believe what you want. nfl is the wwe. that pause in the review allowed pats to get refreshed and essentially have an extended time out.

Some people in the comments do not seem to get this. I am not biased (Eagles fan, so I hate both teams) but I knew that this call would be overturned after seeing one replay and my dad told me I was crazy. It does not matter that James’ knee hit the ground or that he broke the plane of the endzone in this case. While the rule is terrible, it says that James has to complete the process of the catch through the ground if he has not yet become a runner (he did not because he did not take two steps and make a football move). This was a relatively easy call to make and it is not the refs fault. The rule is terrible and should be changed. I recommend having this just be a judgement call without any rule. Just ask 5 refs if this should be a catch or not and do what the majority says. That would be better than this bs rule which has ruined multiple NFL games.
@lincanderson76637 жыл бұрын

linc Anderson Not true. Even if a player catches a ball in the end zone, they must maintain possession. It's not naturally a touchdown the instant it touches their hands. Something like that happened to Calvin Johnson a few years back, and his was even more clearly a catch than this one was. It's a shitty rule but it's the rule. I agree with the OP, it should be a judgement call on the officials part, that would avoid situations like this where it was obviously a catch and score.

You can call the rule stupid, but it was called correctly he bobbled the ball once he hit the ground, his left hand was completely off it. Learn the damn rules "A player is considered to be going to the ground if he does not remain upright long enough to demonstrate that he is clearly a runner. If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact by an opponent), he must maintain control of the ball until after his initial contact with the ground, whether in the field of play or the end zone. If he loses control of the ball, and the ball touches the ground before he regains control, the pass is incomplete. If he regains control prior to the ball touching the ground, the pass is complete"

alot of people will say that call was bogus. According to the rule, that was not a completion. It is the rule, itself, that is debatably bogus. Part of me agrees with this rule, that u should have to maintain control of the ball all the way to the ground. Then, the other parts of me thinks: 1) clear ball control across the goal line is sufficient enough. 2) if the ground can't force a fumble, then how can it force an incompletion after a pretty clear catch?

@@Noah.Nation But his knee was down. Doesn't that rule him down already? Didn't bobble either.
@Noah.Nation10 ай бұрын
@@Pandyzandy Ok. I'm going to explain this as simply and clearly as I can. When a receiver, like Jesse James in this case, jumps to catch the ball, he must keep hold of it until he has fully landed back on the ground. This means that even if his knee touches the ground first, he must still maintain control of the ball through the entire process of falling. In this play, James lost control of the ball while he was still in the process of landing - his knee had hit the ground, but the rest of his body was not yet settled. The ball touched the ground before he could regain control, which he ultimately didn't, resulting in an incomplete pass according to the rules. People can say it's a bad rule, but it's definitely not a bad call. It was the correct call according to the rules at the time.

Jake russell do you mind explaining a bit about the rule? I am a pats fan, but I thought for sure that that was a touchdown, when his knee was down and the ball was in the end zone
@Ryan-by8ui7 жыл бұрын
+Magic Monkey The rule is that if you receive a pass and do not establish yourself as a runner, you must maintain possession through contact with the ground. Because James caught the ball and immediately fell to the ground, he never established himself as a runner. His knee being down is irrelevant, because he was not “downed” by an opposing player. Thus his attempt to get into the end zone. When he lunges over the goal line, the ball wobbles, and it looks pretty clear that when his left hand comes off the ball, part of the football is touching the ground. He had control of the ball when he originally received it, but he did not maintain _possession_ because he didn’t “survive the ground.” This rule also gets upheld regardless if it’s in the back of the end zone or anywhere else on the field. The requirement to maintain possession of the ball supercedes the ball breaking the plain. By the letter of the law, it’s the right call and it’s already been enforced this exact way dozens of times. Faulty rule maybe, but the conspiracy theorists are embarrassing themselves yet again.
@____18617 жыл бұрын
Ryan oh ok. What must a receiver do to establish himself as a runner? I just came back from watching Calvin Johnson's incompletion
@Ryan-by8ui7 жыл бұрын
Yeah there's a little more subjective judgment when it comes to determining if a player is a runner or not. This is from the Rulebook though: _A player has the ball long enough to become a runner when, after his second foot is on the ground, he is capable of avoiding or warding off impending contact of an opponent, tucking the ball away, turning up field, or taking additional steps._ The last few all seem fairly straightforward, but there's some room for interpretation with whether or not a player would be "capable" of warding off impending contact. That's oddly worded and a bit confusing. I would say though, 9 times out of 10 when it actually happens in the game, the refs are looking to see if the receiver has taken at least a couple steps and has the ball tucked away.

Everyone please stop arguing about this "controversial" call. You can clearly see at 10:25 that the ball is on the ground. He turned his body and was a receiver going to the ground. Regardless of the ball crossing the plane, he still lost control. And the ball is clearly on the ground. If it was him catching it in the middle of the endzone as a "receiver" and he lost control the call would be the same. Rules are rules whether you like it or not. The Steelers lost. The Patriots won. Game is over. End of discussion.

The issue here isn’t the call it’s the ruling, the rule states that a receiver must maintain possession through the process of going to the ground, which includes hitting the ground. The breaking of the plane nullifying thing only comes into play if he was a runner, which he was not since he had not taken 2 steps and turned upfield. Therefore the call was correct of an incomplete pass since he did not maintain possession.
