He ran many slants over the middle of the field and took many huge pops to keep drives alive. One of the absolute greatest wide receivers of all time, and if he had played for any other team than the Dallas Cowboys, then the bias against Dallas list maker would have had him placed much higher on this list.

What they don't understand is when Emmitt got to the 2nd level he was never brought down on the first hit, if he was 1 on 1 with a defender he's definitely getting by him with no problem. Besides all that, that great offensive line was only dominant for 5 years tops. They were atrocious after that. L. Allen was the only one of the 5 that was great for an extended period of time.

That's why Irvin's touchdown numbers are low, but he actually has really good peak yardage stats. Led the league in receiving in 1991 with 1523 yards and had over 1600 yards in 1995 while 2 other seasons over 1300 yards. In fact, Irvin's career average of 74.9 yards per game is the highest career receiving yards per game average for any receiver whose career ended before 2000.

Michael, Hall of Fame is exactly where you belong. 🥇 You did the Gronk touchdown before the Gronk was even born! You are King.

All the people who think he should be higher are on crack. He was good for sure and his team was successful but the entire Cowboys offense was loaded. Larry Allen, Emmit Smith, Troy Aikman, etc. Irvin was a good receiver but all the receivers ahead of him on this list are clearly better. His spot is perfect.

Imagine how much better Irvin and Rice would be in the league today with how WR friendly it is with more protection to the WRs across the middle and how many more passes are thrown on a regular basis now.

No question Irvin would have been in the conversation for greatest receiver in NFL history if he played under Bill Walsh, not a run first offense.

@@dchenkin02 I think Irvin was a free agent after the 1994 season, but obviously stayed in Dallas. But I always wondered what he could have done in a system like Green Bay after Sterling was injured that very year? His mentality about winning and being a part of the team is what makes him a legend. He could always be counted on for that 3rd and 9 late in a game.

Years later and I still can't believe they have this guy all the way down this list at #92 when he was literally a better receiver than Jerry Rice and would've been universally recognized as the greatest receiver of all time if not for his untimely and unfortunate injury.
