In case there's any die hard Jim Otto fans that are wondering how he's doing, I just ran into him last night at a Cheesecake Factory in CA. He was there with his wife and daughter. Of course he was dressed head to toe and raider gear. Jim was in good spirits although it is obvious his cognitive health is declining but his appetite was second to none! All in all, he's doing well and has a wonderful support system with him.

The NFL owes the AFL so much to it's history and heritage. It's history couldn't be any more divided between before and after the AFL's onset. The NFL is 100 years old and it's been 50 since the merger. Otto is one of those players that made that possible. It's not just the Namath's and Alworth's .

For instance Dan Marino got all these individuals great stats, but not one championships ring to show for it, an again I can name many great player's with no championships ring, and here they are # 1 Eric Dickerson # 2 DAN Fouts #3 Barry Sanders #4 Jim Kelly to name a few.

Raider nation is in mourning for another icon of the Oakland dynasty passing. For 2 1/2 decades no team in professional sports in the US had a higher winning % than the Raiders of the mid 60's to the late 80's. And no fan base was more appreciative. I met him a couple of times and he was as tough as nails but he was always kind & appreciative. RIP Mr. Otto; thanks for everything.

He said in League of denial that he had over 70 surgeries by then. Also, an amputated leg. I know that everyone wants to say that players back then were tougher, and it is true (from a rules standpoint - so many more things were legal), but a lot of these injuries were the results of terrible helmets and other equipment the players used to wear. I mean, look at Otto's face mask. As tough as he is, he would be the first man to tell you that if he had access to the modern football helmet when he played, he would've played with the modern football helmet. But of course he would tell you that he was using it because it was a better weapon :)

He was genuinly tough. He and tough ole Charlie Kreuger, with the 49ers, never would give up on those puny facemasks, no matter how many black eyes or nosebleeds they got. They were Old School, no doubt about it.

I grew up in orangevale and folsom ca. Loving the raiders. The Raiders had the most diverse set of misfits the league had ever seen! But they all jelled together what a time that was! The glory days

When you add Ron Mix, Gene Upshaw, Art Shell, and the incomparable Bob Boomer Brown, that was the most awesome O-line ever. Kenny Stabler had all afternoon to throw. Just watch some of those old games and compare them to how much time other quarterbacks had. Those 2 or 3 seconds made all the difference in the world.

I grew up at the Orange Bowl in Miami. My earliest memories as a kid old enough to go to football games, 6 or 7 years old, were of Jim Otto and George Mira. He wore 00 as a University of Miami Hurricane All-American. You could hear people in the crowd saying, "Uh oh, here comes Oh Oh." This was in the era when the 'Canes would draw 30,000 people to that stadium, and the next night when two high school powerhouses would meet, there would be 40,000.
