On the one hand, it appears ridiculous at first glance, especially to someone like me who follows (and is used to) other football codes where players are usually required to have a fairly large skill set. I mean, a kicker and a punter? On the other hand, it is a unique selling point for NFL/Gridiron football. Sets the sport apart and makes it special. Treating every (seemingly small) aspect of the game as a craft and science.

MLB Hall Of Fame slugger Harmon Killebrew said the way to hit a knuckle ball in baseball is not to hit the stitches. I don’t think he was joking when he said it. That’s precision. Holding for a placekicker in football must be incredibly difficult. Lucy Van Pelt had the right idea after all.
@vulture38742 жыл бұрын
Could someone clear this up? How is it the long snappers job to get the laces right? He's sending a spiralling ball to the holder. Is it that he trains to snap the ball with a very specific number of rotations? Or is there some other reason?
@spencerplummer80022 жыл бұрын
Long snappers are a very unique specialist in the modern NFL. They are more pivotal in the placement of the laces than the holder, thousands of reps and knowing just how hard to spin the ball so that the laces end up facing the right direction is mostly his job. If you ever watch the McAfee show he has talked about it on numerous occasions... That's why long snappers have been added to the pro bowl

Good vid. Working with a new holder has been part of the problem for sure. But, for those interested, here's a simple FYI about the actual proper angle for holds: Most kickers prefer a slight lean TOWARDS THE HOLDER. So, for a right footed kicker, the ball will lean slightly to the right, from the kicker's perspective. This counteracts a natural pull/hook tendency in the soccer style leg motion. Kickers typically do NOT want the ball leaning back towards themselves. In fact, many like a slight lean AWAY FROM THE KICKER, towards the goal posts. Very slight, but this better presents the sweet spot of the ball and helps with distance kicks. You can see a ton of close-up examples of this (ball leaning slightly towards the holder AND towards the goalposts) at this nfl films video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/omKYhZJpfLmYZ5I Moody's most recent miss against Arizona from 47 yards in week 18 was in part caused by a hold that leaned away from the holder, adding to the hook/pull tendency.
