Curtis Martin is 6th all-time in rushing yards, rushed for a 1000 yards each of his first 10 seasons, and won the 2004 rushing title at the age of 31 with nearly 1700 yards Tomlinson might’ve had a higher peak and flashier style, but Martin was more consistent and might’ve had a better overall career. That said, Tomlinson is right behind Martin at 7th in all-time rushing yards, so they are both clearly football immortals

With the way NFL offenses are ran now as opposed to 15 years ago, those two are probably staying at sixth and seventh for a very long time, possibly generations depending on how long the current line of logic lasts. To put things into perspective, both Tomlinson and Martin made it over 13,000 yards for their careers, and the top two active players by career rushing yards are Derrick Henry who has 8,936 rushing yards, and Ezekiel Elliott who has 8,539. They are the only two active players with 7,000 career rushing yards, and Henry is 29 and is receiving fewer carries per game than in previous seasons (though he still is averaging 17 carries a game), while Elliott is 28 and is not even his team’s primary ball carrier, averaging only eight carries per game this season.

@@fortynights1513 it’s still possible but I’m not sure you could do it the way LT did (see Zeke, as you mentioned). One path is definitely still open but that is to just be consistent and play forever, which is tough as a RB. However it can be done: Frank Gore, for example, was really never the top back in the league at any given point, yet recently retired 3rd all-time with 16000 rushing yards

@@TheLocalLtIt’s possible someone could play at a solid level for a very long time like Frank Gore did. But nowadays, individual running backs are seen as more replaceable then they were 5-6 years ago or earlier. As last offseason showed, it’s possible to play well and not get offered a second contract by your team because primes at the position are shorter in general (Dalvin Cook being the main example of that one), and teams seem hesitant to pay a running back a longer deal after their rookie contract, or fifth year option. And running games seem to be a bit more in tandem than they were in this era, so the best backs on the team might not get as many carries as Tomlinson and Martin did in the 2000’s. That’s why I think the highest rushing numbers are unlikely to be replicated for awhile. No knock on any of the current running backs, but in my view, it depends on the situations they find themselves in.

Derrick Henry very well likely could be the last, all-around, workhorse RB that comes close to or eclipses 10,000 career rushing yards and even if he does, I don't see him finishing in and around similar marks both Martin and L.T. set over 15 years ago. Zeke's best years are mostly behind him and his role was gradually reduced his last 2-3 seasons in Dallas as new Cowboys staff under McCarthy drafted and primed Pollard to be his eventual replacement. Even if Elliott's role was widened or he became RB1 due to some injury, increasing his amount of carries would only raise his yardage total to maybe 650-700, at best, by season's end. If RB's like Elliot, Henry, CMC, Nick Chubb had played during this particular era, they'd all finish with higher career rushing totals, and perhaps even HOF consideration. Of the aforementioned RB's I just mentioned, only Henry and CMC have a halfway-decent chance to make it, possibly Chubb, too if he makes a full, complete AP-like recovery and fantastical comeback season.

Frank Gore Sr.'s career wouldn't have lasted nearly as long if he had debuted as a rookie in early-mid-2010's and even if he had had an outstanding, long-standing career, by the time he reaches his early 30's, he'd be in a similar situation as Elliot and Cook are now and with 4-5,000 less career rushing yards then he finished with. NFL teams, HC's wouldn't have allowed him to have such a crucial, integral role in most offenses unlike a decade ago because NFL economics, the overall value and estimated worth as well as even a great RB's window of opportunity is much shorter then the time Gore was still in his prime in Indy. If the current rules and RB's perception of worth had been applied in 2013-14, Gore would've been told to retire by 34 or 35, maybe younger, because no NFL teams would realistically have any feasible need for him, no matter how fresh, potent or production he felt he had left in him. Same logic applies to Marcus Allen and Emmitt Smith, or frankly, Marshall Faulk, post 2003-ish.

2005 Chargers are arguably the best team to miss the playoffs. I believe they had the #1 hardest schedule in the NFL, and played three teams coming off a BYE in like four weeks. AFC West was hard with the Chiefs, and Broncos that year looking good. But instead of the 9-7 Chargers, or even 10-6 Chiefs, we got 12-4 Jacksonville as one of the wildcards :P

I also remember that the rights to those games are actually with the networks that aired them and not the NFL so they wouldn't be able to use the commentary for those games. I remember that being an issue with some of the 70s games they actually have posted on the channel.

⁠​⁠​⁠@@JCH2768Rights issues could certainly be an obstacle, but there’s also the issue of preservation. I can’t conjure up a full telecast of several playoff games from the first half of the 1970’s. For example, look up both 1972 conference championships and you’ll get a combined two and a half minutes or so of broadcast footage (apparently Jack Buck called football, didn’t know that until I looked up the clips), and in the recent Secret Base documentary on the history of the Vikings, when they talked about the playoff games they played in the 1970’s, you’ll find several labels that say “[Gap in Historical Record]” for sections where they couldn’t find the play by play or footage of what was going on on the field. Even as late as the 1978 divisional round they were missing the end of that game. Bottom line, if I can’t search up a full telecast of several nationally televised playoff games in the rounds before the Super Bowl, then there’s probably a lot of NFL games from the earlier 70’s that were even less of a priority for the networks that televised them, and whose telecasts are lost to history due to the wiping process, and thus NFL Throwback might not have much to draw from.
