How the Detroit Lions have the most inept leadership in sports: The Pontiac Silverdome was the biggest home field advantage in NFL history that was wasted away. 80,000 boozed up Detroiters smoking cigars from their seats right on top of the field. What a waste of an opportunity. I loved the Silverdome. It had a charm like no other.

Final tidbit I'd like to spotlight is from another user who made an astute observation: Fun fact: SF K Ray Wersching kicked the ball on five consecutive plays, which definitely hasn't happened in another Super Bowl, but I don't know if it's happened again in NFL history. Kick 1 - 22 yd FG w :18 left in 1st half Kick 2 - Squibs kickoff, Cincy fumbles, SF recovers w/ :05 left in 1st half Kick 3 - 26 yd FG w :02 left in 1st half Kick 4 - Squibs kickoff, Cincy recovers and takes knee, end of 1st half Kick 5 - Kickoff to begin 2nd half

The Bengals defense played a great game. It was the turnovers by the Bengals offense & special teams that put their defense in a bad position especially near their goal line which the 49ers came away with a then Super Bowl record 4 FG's. The 49ers offense were held to 275 yards for the entire game and in the second half had only around 55 yards of total offense, but built that 20-0 first half lead which was enough to win by 5 points.

Something crazy about this game is that Eric Wright, the star rookie corner for the 49ers made a doofus move after he intercepted the ball (21:40)with about 5 minutes to go...he tried to lateral the ball to a teammate on his 25 yard return. This is with the 49ers barely holding on with a 23-14 lead. Imagine that happening now with a player...win or lose they'd be roasted over the coals.

Most people when they think of the 49ers dynasty in the 80s think of Joe Montana and the high-powered offense. Watching this game though, defense and special teams are what clinched their first world title. 2 interceptions of a great QB in Ken Anderson, a crucial goal line stand, and Ray Wersching going 4/4 and executing those two incredible squib kicks to pin the Bengals deep and then get the ball back for another field goal to end the half. Montana may have won MVP with a characteristically great performance, but he can thank the defense and special teams for putting him in a position to succeed.

Good highlights, but I don’t know why the title of this video emphasizes that it was Madden’s first Super Bowl as a broadcaster when the video includes very little of Madden’s analysis during the game. You could re-edit this clip and include another 20 minutes of Madden-specific stuff and the video would be vastly superior. You can’t find this game anywhere on the internet so it would be well worth it to include more of it here.

@@NFLVault Especially in an era when the Super Bowl was often anti-climatic. Of course, this Super Bowl had a lot to live up to, considering the incredible games that were played during that post-season to lead up to it. One of the odd things about the 1981 NFL post-season was what an indicator the regular season meetings between the teams that met in the conference championship games and in the Super Bowl would end up being. The Bengals faced the Chargers in the regular season, as did the 49ers and Cowboys, and the result of the regular season match-up was replicated in the post-season match-ups, and the same was true regarding the teams that met in the Super Bowl, because the 49ers and Bengals had played each other late in the regular season, and again, the result of the regular season match-up was replicated in the Super Bowl.

Mahomes has never ever saw hard hitting defenses that were non stop blitzing defenses. Defenses that could actually hit the QB hard and low. Defenses who could hit hard and not let up on a blitz due to the worry of a flag. That kid would be lost if he actually had to read defenses and then on IR if they hit him. Mahomes is the absolute most overrated and overhyped player I’ve ever saw.

To me, the biggest game-changer was those squib kicks by Wersching. Bengals couldn't control unpredictability of weird bounces, costing them dearly at end of first half . It's the difference in score maybe being 14-0 at half, instead of 20-0. Insurmountable lead at 20-0. Wersching was told by Walsh to squib kick because earlier that season Wersching played Lions with a leg injury, preventing him from booming kickoffs. He had to squib kick then and noticed peculiar bounces the ball took on Pontiac Astroturf. A small detail that provided valuable intel that Bengals were unaware of and helpless to prevent disastrous fumbles.

As a Niners fan since they 1994 when they won a their fifth title with three of my favorite players Jerry Rice, Deion Sanders & Steve Young on the same team and its been a roller coaster every since, but, I don't have no regrets cause I love my team through thick and thin. The 49er fans from the 80's and before just don't know how good they had it during that decade. If I could teleport back to those glory days, I wouldn't even hesitate. #Niners4Life #NinersEmpire R.I.P. John Madden & Pat Summerall

i been a niner fan since the 70s, believe me, us 80s niners fans really do know how good we had it and appreciated each sb win, especially the 1st one, like ronnie lott said, there will never be another 1st time, that 81 season was magical and special, you could feel it in the air, dont know how to describe it, was never like that after that season ... go niners

@@timelymirror7826 yes, Cris has been a part of all Bengals Super Bowl experiences (1981, 1988, 2021). Sadly, as a player, the Bengals did not win a Super Bowl (0-2) Let’s see what happens Sunday with Collinsworth as a commentator for Super Bowl LVI on NBC.

The reverse on the first series was a dig at Paul Brown by Walsh. Brown's philosophy was that if you do a trick play make it the early in the game so you have the best chance to score.
