Steve the choker Young started the 1991 season and lost so many games before Steve Bono took over the QB position and won every game the rest of the season. But the hole dug by the choker was too deep for the 49ers. The team missed the playoffs. The 49ers team was the best by the end of the season. The 49ers could have won that year's SB. In the decade of the 1990s, the Packers, Cowboys, Redskins, or even John Elway's Broncos had much to thank Steve the choker who destroyed the 49ers.

Their last road loss before that streak started was against the Cardinals in 1988 where the 49ers led 23-0 in the 3rd quarter only to have the Cardinals storm back and win 24-23 on a last second TD by Roy Green. The 49ers wouldn't lose another road game until the opening game of the 1991 season. Then, strangely enough they lost 5 of their first 6 road games that season with Joe Montana injured all season.

You should have seen our group from SF in the stands that day...Philly fans heckling us about the jail underneath, and us being from SF...all the while our team was getting beat up on the field for most of the day. I went into Veteran's stadium 25 years old, left about 39. The day got fun once we were at a local bar that night. Good times.

That DB who gave up the very first Jerry Rice touchdown of the game.. good ol' Izel Jenkins. The Philly sports columnists used to call him "The Human Crouton" for his propensity for getting toasted. Too funny! I grew up rooting for the Giants in Bordentown, NJ during this period... just south of Trenton.... the Giants/Eagles allegiance demarcation line. A 50/50 mix. This was such a great time for my NFL fandom and brings back so many awesome memories of the powerful 49ers and NFC East Super Bowl winners from that era. A far cry from today in every respect! Me, my wife and my 7 year old son traveled to Philly in 1989 to watch our first Niners game! My son and I wore our Niner jackets! We were harrassed because of it but it was worth it! At one point in the 3rd quarter we almost left, but boy I’m glad we didn’t! It was like someone flipped a switch and the Niners went from being down 28 to 10 to being up 38 to 28!

Watching old games makes you realize how much the great coaches really stood out. 49ers were getting blitzed like crazy and they adjusted their offense to take advantage of a over pursuing eagles defense and help Montana get the ball out....the eagles coaches just kept calling the same gameplan no matter how much pressure Cunningham had in his face.

Ryan never developed an offense and was stubborn on D. He had a good defensive system but was too arrogant to adjust or cover for his weaknesses in the secondary. On offense, he just relied on Randall to make extraordinary plays, never developed his skills as a QB, and surrounded him with absolute garbage talent. Cris Carter was troubled despite his talent and Jackson was good/not great. The OL was shaky, the RBs were absolute trash, and the WRs were average on their best days.

I appreciate everything that Brady has done over his career and while it’s hard to compare era to era…It really was a different game when Montana was playing. I think when Joe was playing it was more like the eras before him then the era now is like the past. The players are so protected now, especially the QB’s. If Joe had been protected like Brady has been, OMG his numbers would be ridiculous in my opinion. While Brady is an excellent QB, having watched them both, I don’t think it’s even close. No one has ever had the touch and presence of mind during a tough game than Joe. He could do things back there that no one else could do and frankly I think that includes Brady. You give Joe that protection and his 49er teams get at least 2 more Superbowls and I think the Chiefs get at least 1 if not 2. What makes Joe even better is the fact that when you ask him who the GOAT is, he will say Brady. No arrogance, no grandstanding just a polite and quiet answer that says it all. Joe is the GOAT. Period. But Brady is right there in #2. :)

I remember watching this game. Montana just got abused by the Eagles' D line in the first 3 quarters. If I'm not mistaken, I think he was sacked in that game something like 8 or 9 times, but went ballistic in the 4th. 4 for TDs and 227. For most QB's, that is a really good game, but Montana did that in a quarter. That is absolutely ridiculous. Probably the best game by Montana {or at least of them} as far as regular-season games go.

I was 6 years old watching this game with my Grandpa who was a big Montana & Rice fan. I had just started getting interested in football and understanding the game but only knew Michigan Wolverines football at that point. Rice's opening TD was the first play I saw then the game kind of fell apart and I was mostly playing with Legos in the corner. Later on he told me 'Now you watch, Joe Montana's a great comeback quarterback. He's gonna lead the 49ers to two touchdowns in this last quarter to win this game.' After the first one the Eagles scored again and he figured it was over but I reminded him that Montana just had to lead them to two touchdowns to win the game. 'Two MORE touchdowns though. They already got one, they won't get two more from here.' Well in a way, Grandpa was right. Joe Montana did not lead two more touchdown drives that day...he lead THREE MORE! How could I not be a Niners fan after that?!

This is why he is the GOAT! Back when defenses could late hit & abuse QBs & wide receivers on the line, against probably the most ferocious pass rush of that era. He got knocked down on almost every play. He didn't panic, he picked himself up in the 4th quarter, bought time with his legs (something Brady can't do), and LIT the Eagles-up.

That Eagle defense was scarry! Reggie, Jerome and Seth Joiner who was a 7th round pick. Clyde Simmons was a 11th. Buddy was an a$$hole but the man was a great judge of talent!

Every pass attempt looked like a jailbreak the way those linemen would swarm through the line at him! I wanted them to fire everyone! Once they got some help, Mark Tuinei and Nate Newton turned into intregal members of a great Super Bowl winning line! It is a shame that the Giants, Redskins and Cowboys all won Superbowls and the Eagles who had the best defense of them all didn’t.

Cunningham was a great QB, but Montana lofting those passes with pin point accuracy to Rice, Rathman, Taylor, Jones, and Craig. So many weapons you couldn't cover them all.

Brady, as we all know went against another great D-Line in his most important game, and could BARELY, BARELY squeeze out 14 pts....With Randy Moss.

I was a teenage Philly fan watching this game. I thought the Eagles were coming into their own. The previous week they had a big comeback win over the redskins at RFK. and here it looked like they were kicking the niners ass. I thought the eagles were becoming the the team. Then, it fell apart. this game is a great representation of the Buddy ryan eagles era....along with the fog bowl..... u thought they could become great but they could never put it all together.

NFL rules made for a better game back then. Today you cannot touch QBs and every big clean hit gets flagged anyway. Notice how Montana tripped on his own feet a few times? Credit that to the Eagles whose constant pressure and knockdowns got in Montana's head. Couldn't work in today's rules. Today, most of those hits on Montana are judged as late hits and would be flagged. Eliminating mental pressure from the most important player on any offense changed the game permanently.

Well heck. The league rules and officiating was different back then it was tougher. Joe Montana took some hard knocks and kept rolling he didn't stay down he didn't whine he didn't complain of unfairness. He got right back up on the saddle and rode that mean horse like a real cowboy. Tom Brady is a great player but imagine what Joe Montana could have achieved with special protection rules that favored Tom Brady. Like marvel comics creator Stan Lee would say: 'Nuff Said!!
