Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o (b. 1938, age 86) is a Kenyan writer and a social critic. He is hailed as 'East Africa's leading novelist.'
His first novel is Weep Not, Child (1964). This was the first major novel in English by an East African.
Ngũgĩ left his English name,James, and started writing only in his native Gikuyu language, from 1977 onwards. Because of his play, I will Marry When I Want (1977), Ngũgĩ was imprisoned for a year, and subsequently forced into exile from Kenya.
