Hohou Rongo - The Peace Covenant was signed between Wiremu Tāmihana and General Carey in 1865. The signing led to an end in the military campaigns of the Waikato and shifted the pursuit of tino rangatiratanga from the taiaha to the pen. Drawing on the newly digitized archives of the Old Colonist Museum and other archival records of this time, Liam Appleton shares his research journey piecing together the intriguing story of how this document and accompanying original water colours came to be held in Auckland Libraries Heritage Collections.
