@@gmail4218 Lately that is not an option for many people & MANY coins!!! The rare graded coins are so expensive, my strategy is to find great quality ungraded coins & get them graded. You either get a keeper, or you can pretty much doubling your money selling the graded, slabbed version that was lower than what you collect, no matter how it grades.

I am a power seller on eBay. You can get a refund on any purchase by selecting the return that says item does not match description. No matter the policy the seller states (no return all sales final etc) the seller has to accept the return and refund your money. I bought a 1922 Grant with star that was a fake clad. My machine told me it was fake and I got my money back from the seller. Dude did not even argue he knew it was a fake.

If you use a card then you can fight it by contacting your bank that owns the card. As long as the purchase was finalized by a debit card or credit card you can fight it. But you can lose it as well. I am just letting people know that on eBay they can return anything they bought by checking the box that says the description does not match the product. It’s irrelevant if it matches as eBay policy is to believe the customer and make the seller take the product back on his/her dime.

They say fake and fake is the best news u can get other than it being from the us mint. That means it was likely real gold and was actually circulated he should’ve known that then u go down the latter to jewelers tokens souvenirs tokens then replicas . When they call a fraction gold coin a fake think of minted in a small assayers office for circulation by private investors. These coins r really misunderstood and theirs a lot to learn

First of all, thank you for sharing your story with us. It takes balls and $$$ to have the courage to send many of your coins in for grading and to have some of them come back as fakes or cleaned, etc.!! I have learned A LOT from watching your videos! Truly!!! Anyone can brag about something they accomplished on KZbin, but not everyone is humble enough to share in what appears is a failure, when it is really the best kind of teaching we could ask for! Hats off to you sir! :-)

+LadyLibertyStacker Nobody likes losing money but the risks are not huge as I have had lots of successes that make coins worth more and mostly all I can lose is the grading fee and even then since i have 100% good feedback on ebay since 2001 I never seem to have any problem selling anything that I list because of the confidence factor. I think that we all like hearing of failure as much as success and the Brits like failure even more than success )) but its quite entertaining to see someones misery and challenges too ))

Fakes are easy to detect. Weight plus diameter plus thickness as gold or silver if replaced by plated copper or iron. That's basic metal aside. For fakes made in gold or silver you just need a loupe and your eyes. Fakes are usually cast. Cast coins wont have the cartwheel lighting effect of new silver or gold coins when rotated under light. Also remember that antique fakes also exist which are generally accepted as restrikes by collectors.

Great video! I was told by a coin dealer in 1980, the best way to learn about collecting/investing, is to buy the books first, then the coin. As time progressed I saw the formation of PCGS in 1986 and the world of coin grading, collecting and values changed forever. The purpose, I was told, was to establish a consistent reliable grading standard & market. So, if dealer in LA gave a value of a coin $100, a dealer in Chicago or New York would recognize the same price. Then an established registry would be created so coins could be tracked as they changed hands in the future. Values change based on supply and demand. There are NO bargains in rare coins! I was also told this by dealers. Many have told me they prefer PCGS graded materials. Legitimate ones anyway. Scammers, counterfiters and thieves wear suits too. As one very reputable dealer told me, "Caveat emptor", buyer beware and keep reading the books, attend shows and join a club. Educate yourself and you won't get scammed!

It happens the coins we though would get a High MS comes back AU “details” ... as for NGC they are the one to go to when it comes to World coins , I’ve noticed the NGC world coins fetch 10%-20% more than PCGS world coins ... I own Both PCGS and NGC also own some older ANACS white slabs ... I have nothing against NGC I’ve seen some under/over graded coins from both PCGS and NGC .... I’ve been to coins shows dealers and some collectors will only look at PCGS “slabs” they are drinking the “PCGS KOOL-AID” buying the slab and not the coin they are “brainwashed” in to believing PCGS is the most superior grader on market ... sadly I’ve seen many Over/under graded coins in PCGS holders as well.... Ask what real difference between an MS69-MS70 (modern coin) that will get oh , ahh , well .... there really no difference ! I looked at both MS69 and MS70 next to each other under 30x loupe NO DIFFERENCE ! What so ever ! Both PCGS and NGC are practicing Market grading they don’t want to flood the market with MS70 they rather see a bunch guys cracking out MS69s all day sending them back paying submissions/grading fees .... it all about making money grading

Hi Numis..... grading is an art. So everyone has a opinion or thought. I have sent in many coins and failed myself. I must have sent in over 24 coins with obvious scratches. So we all get fooled or over look the marks. I find in order to grade coins, its good to have a sample of the coin you are grading in a holder already, if that is not practical, then get several other examples of coins and just compare them. Even if different in date and mint mark are not the same. 2nd you need to work under a certain type of light. Or at least 2 different light colors. Like a blue light color or a yellow light color. NOT actual colored lights, but the light spectrum is broad and has shades of different colors within the white light. 3rd, do not ever look at a coin once and decide to send it in, I look at a coin and then put it in a good flip and store it away for a few days. Then I take it out again and start to compare it to other coins. I am sure graders, have a vast catalog of either pictures and or coins to compare against. So you and I should look at other coins also. 4th when I think I have found 5 or more coins I want to send in, I collect them in a intercept shield box. This fights humidity and stuff. Oh also only examine your coins with white cotton gloves on. Make sure the wife does not use fabric softer and or drier sheets on these white gloves. 6th never talk to anyone when you are looking at your coins. Just your breath will spoil the surface of coin. 7th, for one of a kind coins, look at a coin dealers coins and or go to more shows to see what a coin looks like in a grading holder. 8th, I was told most dealers just deal with slabbed coins now. And if a dealer has both of slabbed coins and raw coins, well look out. They maybe selling the stuff that is not gradable to you! 9th you and I can not compete with a dealer or tv show in sending in hundreds of coins to grade a month. Did you know that they have a show or bulk rate to give to dealers on one hundred or more coins. So just think, you are a grading company. You and I send in 5 to 20 coins once or twice a year. Now the grading company gets maybe 3 to 5 hundred coins a month. Who would you give better grades to? And finally the single most important thing you should do is this. Take all the fake coins you have study them and compare them to other coins. If you think this coin is real, then send it to another company. Like Anacs or PCGS. Sometimes they think differently about coins. The coin you showed maybe real? Who knows...

If you want to know a coins condition just look up the same coin in a MS65 then you’ll know if its good or not. If it doesn’t match then drop to MS60... if it still doesn’t match then drop 5 more and keep looking until you find a coin that matches the one you’re looking at online.

Yes fully aware of NGC UK international coin grading and economics and comical. As I sent in an Ibrahim Lincoln copper coin 1943 and also 1933 British copper penneys to NGC international London to be graded . I paid for elite membership of NGC UK for coin grading plus further £100 and they was unable to do the job as they made excuses that it was a pgcs, so I sent them an envelope stamp £10 worth of address envelope to myself with chip also witnessed by the post office and many other people apparently they are unable to grade very expensive rare coins like my coins of Abraham Lincoln made out of copper 1943 D and 1933 copper British pennies .

That does not always help. I bought a tiny Canadian maple leaf from a supposedly decent company. They cited their parent company as an authorized dealer and that seems to be the only try part of the transaction as the coin the tested as fake. I called both companies AND the royal canadian mint. I am in the process of trying to recover the loss as now I'm sure that the other 2 gold coins I bought will test fake as well.

I'm just a small seller on eBay, who sells PCGS, ICG, and ANACS. I am a very honest seller, and am not afraid to be corrected if I am wrong about something. I never intentionally mislead any buyers, though I have had my fair share of troublesome sellers in the not-so-recent past, but I digress. I sell my graded coins at Coin World's pricing guide, and still accept offers lower than what is stated. If a slab isn't up to par, I make sure I put that information in the description, as well as provide detailed photos as proof of my claims. I also try to purchase NGC coins as well, haven't purchased any bank notes or anything of that sort, though I did come across a $20 star note at my local ATM. It's in pretty rough circulated shape, but is still worthy of being held in my personal collection. If you're interested in what I have to sell, I will post the link to my eBay page in the comments.

I loved what you shared. I have great respect for you, but I’ve lost respect for the grading company. Seems they can make up the grading rules as they go , and not be held responsible for any belief that someone can expect an honest evaluation ? Justifying in Exploiting how people innocently put their trust in their grading skills as professional ? Is there small print in any paperwork you sign when you send your coins in ? That states they can not be held liable or accountable for being unethical ..not doing their job ? This is More than just taking advantage of you ! Do they Believe that this is To no fault of their own, that you trusted in their judgement, Let alone Paid a considerable amount of money in good faith , for a service considered to be exemplary ? Errr… this Pissed me off!! Your coins were beautiful.! I’d call them on that! get them graded again .. really..how many people have they screwed over because they were in a hurry or didn’t feel like doing their job ?? Or maybe an employee is exhibiting a god like complex? who’s gonna challenge them ? They are the most expensive of grading services.. from what I hear. This needs to be dealt with properly .. you deserve an apology & a refund, ask to have them graded by a professional!! ?? I apologize for my outburst! But geez, really!! ?? You have amazing coins!

I’m kinda surprised. You’ve sent in these coins for grading and I can buy them at my local coin store for spot or just slightly above. To me they are just bullion. Why would you want to spend money on shipping and grading ?

I don't think it was a complete mess. When you uploaded the video with the coins ready to send I knew some of them were going to be details graded. Anyways, the ms indian head and the perth mint sovereign are beautiful. Same with some proper graded eagles. I have found very useful to set up a checklist when observing a coin before sending it to ngc/pcgs. That might help (especially with rim damage and removed from jewllery coins). I really loved the victoria half farthing; I found much more joy and thrill when I see that type of coins versus 20th pieces. Hope the next batch comes with better fortune! Cheers

If nothing else it was a learning experience! Every numismatist goes through something like this at some point in their learning, maybe not as severe, but at least you got it all out of the way at once. Very informative video!

Believe it or not, both Ebay and Pay Pal offer amazing buyer protection. Always make an HD video recording when a package is opened or sealed in order to verify its contents. I have a 100% positive feedback rating on Ebay and a $20 million selling limit. I only deal in PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and ICG coins (the best services in that order of reputation), and currency certified by PCGS or PMG.

A slabbed coin is ALWAYs going to be worth more than one that isn't. This is especially true for American gold. There are a lot of counterfeits/fakes out there--some of which are really really good. So even when it's a common, a slabbed coin is a solid investment. You at least know it's genuine. Once slabbed, it will also be preserved at that state forever. So you effectively conserved the coin for eternity.

My Ebay rare coin store (certifiedcitynet) does seven figures annually. I deal exclusively in NGC and PCGS coins. You should never purchase raw coins unless you are a true expert or willing to assume a gigantic financial risk. You should only buy numismatically valuable coins, such as Bust, Seated, and Barber coins. Most modern coins are far too common to ever prove to be a good investment. Some rarities are vastly underpriced and thus bargains even if you pay full retail or more. I often pay well over PCGS Price Guide for certain dates. Yet, I would not pay $10 for many modern coins that list for $1,000 or more.

Since all are MS, and AU means those coins are all GENUINE! Just sell at the registry of Great Collections. It will depend on the MARKET how they will price those.

The worst case "buy" is getting a fake coin. I avoid this by purchasing ONLY from reputable dealers with excellent reputations. I do not buy from ebay or other flotsam and jetsam sites. 😊

first of all I am sorry about your 1887 $1 Gold coin , it really sucks when these old pieces come back fake and you had not only paind for grading but you spend time, patience and money for buying that coin too. although your 1883 $1 , 1851-O Au53 are pretty. 1883 1/2C VF35BN is really nice coin 1909D $5 and 1908 $5 are just beautiful Indian head pieces very hard to get them graded according to one of the old graders I talked with at Long beach coin show last year. You have great collection going. I don't make video's :( not sure why yet, but you have inspired me to do so. Well check out our coin page on facebook Chinese panda coin collectors and happy collecting!

I know everyone says not to buy from eBay. Thought I was clever enough to spot fakes, so no worries. Nearly ready to buy a few coins from a "trusted" seller with 40,000+ sales. Then noticed at the last second it was missing a key privy mark. So...ya. FORGET eBay. I don't care how cheap the coins are. Even a -50% discount is just not worth the hassle. And the eBay "guarantee" only promises a REVIEW...and that's AFTER you send the item(s) back to the seller...and only if they refuse to do a refund. If the eBay person doing the review doesn't have the knowledge to properly identify a fake, they could get confused and say you received the item that was described in the ad. A lot of situations could be a grey area. At the mercy of some idiot working from home with a laptop due to COVID. It's not like you're getting a proper review from an NGC expert.

A very strange highlight, "scratch." Perhaps I just haven't seen too many NGC coins yet, given that I just started the hobby, but I thought they actually docked for hairlines more than they do larger scratches.

With eBay you know the risks going in but you could have probably saved yourself further loss by knowing the specification of the $1 coin (diameter, thickness and weight) typically if the gold isn't even real the specification will be off by miles either underweight too thick or too big or a combination. Yours looks like either a lower karat of gold (and would still be less dense) or gold plated. There's a tiny chance it's gold plated platinum as platinum was very cheap late 19th/20th century.

My personal math ( more novice then you ) I'll get graded coins where there is a good chance at hitting a big spread. In other words the 1880 o morgan near ms65 condition raw . I'll buy 10 coins around 200 each . If one gets ms 65 I'm set with the rest getting details . Same with PL surfaces on raw cc coins I'll get 4 or 5 at 4-500$ and if one gets a 65 pl or dmpl I'm set . If the coin is approaching 1000$ usd I wont buy a raw coin period. I'll buy the cheapest 66 or the 65+ and maybe go for a cac . But expensive coins are market strategies and need to mature. So a 20$ gold saint is one I bought slabbed because I believe the collector base will grow . Or a key date cc . Expensive coins buy slabbed and invest in a sticker ( lower risk ) coins with a big spread buy deep and dont be disappointed if 90% fall short

It's not. All mint issued gold coins (other than recently minted bullion coins) are 90% gold and 10% copper. If someone is going to counterfeit a gold coin it will be gold plated, not even close to 90%.

As a collector of ancient coins, I don't have this problem with counterfeits. Just kidding! Anyway, it's easier to figure out if they are genuine, even from a detailed picture and precise weight, but you need to see MANY of them before.

Hello. Does a chipped coin slab affect the value of it at all? Can it reduce the price at all, or it doesn’t matter? What about scratches and cracks as well? The coin intact, it’s the slab/holder condition only that I am talking about. Thank you very much. I appreciate it.
