The 1902 Philly, "one of the more unattractive coins in the series of Morgan dollars." Ben, I'm but a hobbyist, but I'm always impressed how you're practically able to identify a coin's year and mint just by assessing the strike and surface finish. I know early '80s San Frans have that certain bling, but to me, most Morgans look pretty darn similar. Anyway, I enjoy what you do.

I have a few coins in my collection with a similar appearance to the 1911-d Barber shown. In a couple cases I might lean towards an old cleaning or polishing having taken place and various degrees of retoning to have occured, and on the others I think the way they look was acquired naturally due to their particular environmental exposure or how they were stored as you had mentioned (manilla envelopes or other cardboard or paper contact, or perhaps heat or contact with other metal types while stored(?) ). Making an assumption based on 'not knowing' something for certain is a very arbitrary way of rendering a judgement in my opinion. As long as that coin is entombed in plastic with that negative designation it will never get the unbiased appraisal of attractiveness or worth by a prospective collector/buyer that it may be due. My coins that are somewhat similar are raw, I tend to purchase coins based on eye appeal and strength of details, and of course to the degree possible, absence of major hits or injuries. Some coins just don't need to be holdered and suffer the 'slings and arrows' grading companies with no skin in the game are only too happy to unleash on 100+ year old coins on a whim.
