Vann, Surrey; a living legacy to a life-long love of gardening

For fifty years the garden at Vann in Surrey has delighted National Garden Scheme visitors. Its natural informality and rural setting exude the best of English country gardens, roses clamber across the roof and walls of the old house, wisteria festoons the pergola, formal planting is complemented by wild interlopers left to add colour and exuberance and a rill, lake and wooded stream garden add interest and tranquillity. It's little wonder that film makers have adored the garden; BBC’s Howards End and Disney’s Christopher Robin were filmed here. Developed from a former market garden by the passion, love and commitment of Martin and Mary Caroe, our film is a tribute to them both. Mary died earlier this year from Covid-19. What a special garden! As an American that's traveled extensively in England, wales and Scotland just to see the gardens I so appreciated the effort by the National Garden Scheme to put these wonderful places on KZbin, especially during this difficult time. I have been binging on all the gorgeousness and it has helped so much with the isolation. It's inspirational!

I will watch this many times over. It was so lovely to end with Mary's photo. So very sorry for her passing of this virus since as a gardener, we all hope to reach a ripe old age and simply drop into the border. Cheers to her legacy.

Such an inspiration! I'm working on creating my garden and started from a completely empty lot, even grass was thin when I started this project in Colorado mountain town. I hope I will be able to see established garden and will have enough time to enjoy it. I started three years ago and I'm fifty now. If not me I think my kids and their fiture kids will love it. I hope.

I greatly respect people who garden because I can’t even grow a cactus to save my life! I literally killed a cactus because I watered it too much. I tried growing kale and carrots and they didn’t make it either. The carrots sprouted then died. The kale first did well but died after I transplanted them. This year, I bought lavender and I’m terrified to transplant them because all the other flowers in years past have also withered and died along with one of my five trees that I bought and had planted. I’m disappointed. What’s so hard about growing plants? 🤷🏻‍♀️
