Your criticisms are justified and presented intelligently, your ideas are genuine and smart, and your intentions are for the better of the game and most importantly the players. Excellent work Johnny, Kudos!

Hey all, I sent this to Johnny a while back about some GM mode ideas for future NHL games. I really like Johnny's ideas (especially his potential idea), and think these would improve GM mode as well. So please, give this a read and tell me what you think. How's it going Johnny? I have, what I think, are some really superb ideas to implement into GM mode to make it not only more fun, but also more realistic AND arcadey, flavorful, and arguably most importantly: IMMERSIVE! Please, please, please, give this a read as I put a lot of thought into it and really think you and others would love to see these implemented. Note: I'm going to try and get fairly indepth. First, coaches. Ever feel that you have an awesome team but are having a lackluster season, can never win the Cup, and/or your young guns aren't developing like they should? Of course you do, i've seen your GM vids ;P Also, ever notice how the Assistant GM in the GM tracker is virtually useless and is the only representation of coaching in GM mode aside from your own? I propose a new coaching system. In my hypothetical system you can hire/fire a head-coach (possibly entire staff but I havn't put too much thought into that yet) that will give your team certain bonuses. Note, he would NOT change lines (unless you have the option on) and would (somewhat) act as HUT coaches do. However, they would not necessarily be constant attributes (which I will explain below). Also, the hiring/ firing of a coach, including what time you do it, could have affects on your team, although I havn't put too much thought into that yet and thus will spare you of the details. Also it is important to note that coaches can retire just like players, although this will have no real impact on the game apart from choosing a new coach. Finding a new coach will be easy as well, as you would simply need to click the hire/fire button on the coaching screen (could be the final tab in the Line Changes screen, could be in GM Tracker, doesn't really matter I don't think), and choosing from a list of available coaches. Let's use a real-world scenario as a hypothetical in-game example. You're the Vancouver Canucks GM and have to hire a new coach before heading into the 2014-15 season. You look around and decide that Barry Trotz, who gives your team +3 Defensive Awareness for all skaters(1/4), +5 Random Stat for goaltenders (2/7), +10% Defence Category growth for young players/prospects, and +5 Poise for all players during playoffs, is the way to go for now. You'll notice that next to some of those attributes there is a fraction in parentheses. This stands for how many games these attributes come into play. Meaning, the +3 Defence for all skaters will come into play roughly once every four games. Likewise, goaltenders will only get a +5 boost to a stat twice every 7 games. This prevents getting a huge boost every game, but also provides realism in that teams play better (to their coaches style/ potential) some games and not-so-much other games. You'll also notice the other two stats, +10% D-category growth, and +5 playoff poise. The +10% D-Category Growth for young players will affect how that player grows in that category throughout the year, and/or when they get their off-season jump. So under Barry Trotz you'll see young skaters like Hunter Shinkaruk (playmaker in NHL14 if i am correct) become skilled defensivley. And don't worry, this won't stunt their growth in other areas, it just means that those players tend to become better defensivley. Then there's the +5 Playoff Poise, which as the name implies, gives everyone on your team +5 poise during the playoffs. Keep in mind all of these numbers are hypothetical. Now back to our scenario. You hire Barry Trotz and you make the playoffs. Yay! And say your guys make the playoffs for 4 years straight. However, you never get farther than the second round... Then you can opt to fire Trotz in the offseason (i'm thinking the only time you can't fire a coach is the playoffs, but that is subject to change obviously) and hire a new coach, perhaps one with more Playoff attributes, and try again. This is essentially what my new coaching-system idea is and how it is implemented. I think this could be a very cool way to not only ad flavor to the game, but a level of arcadey-realism that would overall improve GM modes. I mean, think about all the times in your Vancouver Let's Play you could've potentially used a new coach, or during that slumping San Jose season even? Next, Franchise/ Orginization Persona Attributes. We all know certain teams have certain histories and persona's too them. Boston, the physical and defence-oriented juggernaught. Chicago, the skillful and playoff-potent titan. Toronto, the failure (Haha, just messing with you John ;P). But these aren't implemented in the game at all. Apart from the players and logo each team is generic. Shouldn't these virtual representations of the real life orginizations actually represent them, and be specific about it too? So, i propose adding on what I call Franchise Characteristics (/persona/attributes, whatever). The idea is simple, and similar to the Bonuses certain Civ's get in Civ V that make the Civ (in this case, team) behave kinda like their real-life counterparts. For example, you're the Detroit Red Wings (i'm using Detroit because I know them best as they're my favorite team). Upon starting GM mode you see at the top of your GM Tracker "Franchise Attributes" (or persona, or characteristics, or whatever you wanna call it!) with 3 symbols to the right of it. Those symbols are the teams starting characteristics, and they give bonuses to your team. Note, these bonuses will mostly NOT be player-stat bonuses, but there'll be a few exceptions. So again, for example, Detroit. In real life the Red Wings are known for drafting their many incredible Swedish players, 23-straight-year playoff appearances, and for being a great puck-possesion team. So, Detroit would start with, say: Swedish Fish: +20% Scouting Accuracy for the Swedish hockey leagues and +5%for other Scandinavian hockey leagues. Winning Traditon: +5 Playoff Poise for all players Puck-Possesion (Couldn't think of a witty name for this one ;P): +10% Puck Skills Category growth for young players/prospects. This would give the Red Wings a lot of flavor to them for starters, but also provide realistic bonuses for the team. It addresses/ take in account the real Red Wings Swedish-ness, drafting prowess, style of play, and history. Apply this to all 30 teams and you've got quite the immersive game there. You may be wondering why I keep saying "starting" characteristics as well. That is because my idea also allows for customization of ones team's characteristics/persona. In my head each team starts with 3 starting characteristics, but can also add on more, that can be unlocked throught GM Tracker points, and selected from a easy-to-use pop-up menu. Currently, I imagine 3-4 more characteristics that can be added. I'm thinking 3-4, because if you play GM mode on Medium (if i'm correct) it takes normally 3-4 "inputs" of GM Tracker points into the various categories in-order to max them out (if ya get me), so, gaining new characteristics would act as one of those and require GM Tracker points. So, hypothetically, by the time you're done playing you could have a Detroit team with characteristics like this: Starting- Swedish Fish: (from above) Winning Tradition: (from above) Puck-Possesion: (from above) Added- Physicality: +5% to physical category growth It's Canada's Game: +15% Scouting Accuracy in Canadian Hockey Leagues Historic Legends(this could be a starter for Detroit/others as well): +10 Playoff Poise for all captains Enhanced Farming Methods: +5% growth to all prospects NOT in the NHL. Concluding this idea, teams would be really immersive because they would be their true-unique selves as well as allow for customization, making the team truely yours, and would add just a fun element to the game. Obviously my ideas would need balancing, tweaks, etc (i have other ideas two but these one's I've thought through fairly well) but I think these could really imrpove the GM mode and make this game, so, so much more fun and immersive. Please let me know what you think, if you agree with my ideas, and if you have any questions about what I wrote. Thanks John, and enjoy the playoffs!

I have already posted this, but I think it would go along pretty well with your changes... For GM Mode (or the entire game in general) i want to get rid of player types. I find it a lot that some player types like the PWF never really get points, or some play makers only pass just like in the San Jose GM. I would prefer a system that can tell you how a player acts. For example, there can be a bar that will show if a player would rather shoot or pass, so lets say Shoot would be on the left and Pass on right. (like that) So you can look at these stats just like you would the overall. Someone like Walton from San Jose would have a bar like this. ShootPass. This shows that this player would rather pass then shoot. But if the bar looked like this, ShootPass. It is more even, so Walton could be like a play maker, but in this case, it would be more of a two way forward, but it is a lot more in depth. Say you have a guy like Walton, you could use his bar to tell that you should get a guy who is more inclined to shoot. ShootPass. These two players would work well together Since the bar seems to even out. However, sometimes in the current GM Mode, you can put 3 snipers on a line and it works fine, but with this system they wouldn't work well together, since they don't like to pass. The system would also work in other cases, like a goalie. StandupButterfly. You can use this to determine what stance they prefer to be in. This goalie would be considered a hybrid now. However it is just more in depth

Ignore those shit heads, I think you've got some really great ideas in here! Coaches having their own stats would be stellar, definitely makes sense. The franchise persona idea is pretty cool, but it seems like it could make your team too good. Needs to be enough negative stats going against both the coaches (ie: a rating that gets team morale down after a poor performace (because he yelled at them lol)) and the teams.

It's not that the types need to be taken out, it's just that they need be fixed. They should do what 2K did in their NHL series. You put players together, and the more they play together the better chemistry they get together. That way no matter who you have on the line(3 TW, a PWF with 2 SNPs, etc) they'll eventually play very well together because they'll gain chemistry. They could do it something like, certain player types together(like say a PWF, PLY, SNP) would have a base chemistry to start out with, and over the course of say 2 or 3 games, they start getting better chemistry together. This would tie in also with the upgrading system by adding in a head coach category. The higher the head coach is upgraded, the faster the players gain chemistry or something like that.
@nyrfan200
@nyrfan200 9 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. I just hate when I draft a player because he is a playmaker but he will literally only get 10 goals a season as a first liner. I would like an easier system to tell who I am drafting. As for the coach, I think that they should add them in and have a system for them. Like say, certain coaches are really good defensively. So it can say like a +10 Defensive category. Or somebody is really good on the powerplay but bad on PK so they will have a +PP but -PK. So if you have a team that isn't so good offensively, you can sign a coach that is good at offense so it will balance out. I do have to say, I think a chemistry system would work great. I would love to see it in the game...
@CamKehler

I can't remember exactly which chell it was in, but I remember a screen in GM-mode that allowed you to change a player's type while also having the ability to specify what attributes you wanted that player to improve in--I liked that--it felt more realistic & customizable. For example, when you have a guy like Walton, who's only getting ~10 goals/season, you could set him to train his shooting attributes.. like a real-life coach might do. I realize Walton actually had a good enough shot as it was--I suppose we only have EA's shoddy game development to blame for holding him back--I'm just saying that I like the concept of being able to control a player's growth and development similarly to the way teams actually do in reality and that was one way to do it. So, I miss that.
@Masterown35
@Masterown35 9 жыл бұрын
Cam Kehler I couldn't agree more. They took that out after 11 or 12 can't remember exactly. But that was the best development system IMO. Allowed you to develop a player into what you needed him to be.

@mikedouglas3327 9 жыл бұрын
Your coming at this wrong. There is no need to get rid of player types because that is what makes a player unique in the game. EA just needs to focus on the stats and that is what determines who plays well and not the player types. BUT I do think they should look into a system like you introduced, this would be easier to see who plays well with who. This would also introduce a chemistry bar for each line!

me too! I have a similar idea for Live the Life. Some kind of "momentum boost". If you're winning a couple games in a row, every player on your team has slightly improved stats. If you're on a cold streak, your stats get a bit worse. Also, if you critize your teammates after a loss, that should also have an effect on your momentum. Your teammates will still dislike your comments, but they have slightly better stats for the next game, because they'll try a lot harder after you critized them. Negative comments in Live the Life only have bad effects in NHL 14, so they are kind of pointless anyway

For the GM Mode, regarding potential, I like your ideas but potential is real and serves a purpose. It should be based on both potential and production. Some people are just more talented then others and thats why they should have high potential. If it were based just on production it would be 100% broken. People could just play every game and hit 200+ points with a certain player they want to grow and have a team full of 95+ overalls. Also, drafts should have lower round surprises and should work sometime like this: Scouting only gives more overall than potential, and maybe have something like the scout saying something about the player like: Player A works hard but the raw talent isn't there, projects to be a good 3rd/4th liner, but Player B has the raw talent but no work ethic, if you could get him to work harder he could be a solid 1st/2nd liner. Of course Mr. Scout could be wrong sometimes and Player A could become an amazing 1st liner while Player B just doesn't have the talent and only looks like he's not trying, and Mr. Scouts accuracy could be upgraded with the usual system through upgrading the scouting system. Also, the higher your scouting level the more scouts you should have.

One thing that I've wanted in gm mode since it came out is trade discussions rather than it's trade offers. So you make an offer that isn't quite what the other team wants they counter with something they like and it goes back and forth. Another aspect of trade discussions I think would be nice is in mlb 2k11 (probably in the later ones too I just don't have those) but you click on a player you want to have or give up and you get a list of trades that the team or teams would be willing to make for that player. You can still alter the trade offers but at least with this you have an idea of who is available and who isn't.

You can't imagine how refreshing it is to hear you speak. You make such a great point about the 6v6 HUT comparison. Yes I use to do the same when I was 8 and played blades of steal for nes but I started really playing with NHL95 when I was 15. When I race against people that are good (no trolls) I begin to understand the gripe that people have w the AI. Unless they make a T-1000 I think there will always be a huge difference. I guess I went online late in life cause I knew that was going to happen. Such as life. Awesome video.

trade value should take into account production, because you can trade for a guy who is like 83 84 overall and has like 35, 40+ goals and not have to give too much up, and you can trade high 80 overall players and get a lot back for them even though they don't produce

As a big GM mode player and fan, I agree with all of Johnny's comments about GM mode. One thing I wish EA would fix is the fact that no matter how good you make their potentials, created players never get better. I also agree that HUT and Live the Life mode gameplay can get really old, really fast because of the shitty fucking computer AI.

Two suggestions to improve the Be a GM mode: 1. When trading players, a player should be at his most valuable when traded by himself. If you make a trade proposal that includes more than one player, their individual trade values should decrease. In NHL 14 you can stack a few mediocre NHL players to get an elite player back. This does not happen because teams in the salary cap world value quality over quantity. 2. When you get informed that a player has been injured, you should be able to replace him immediately with another player. This player should then be automatically placed in all the lines that the injured player used to play in. Going through the Edit Lines menu and adding the replacement manually for each line is a real drag. PS. Thank you for another great video Johnny!

I think for the EASHL free agency thing, it would be cool if you could save some of your goals, plays, save etc. and showcase them on your profile in the free agency, to help a team determine if your worth their time or what not.

There's one thing that I really hate about GM mode, which I have named "the void". Some players who get classed as Dpth FWD's and Dpth Dmen never get out of that. A perfect example is Matt Nieto on SJS. When I started my SJS GM he was 78 ovr (I think) with 4 gold stars. I tried everything to get him to progress, I had him on the 4th line, on the bench, in the AHL and by year 7 he was only 80 ovr. Some more players to mention are Sam Bennett, Sean Monahan, and probably more.

Its great that Johnny is making these reviews but could you possibly make them a bit earlier? Like one month or so. I think 2BC and Bacon Country are channels that EA actually follows so this is great way to get the community's ideas to the developers. They aren't going to read the rants in EA's NHL forum. My point is that most of the stuff Johnny mentioned are true and the ideas he had were mostly good, but now when there is less than a month to 15's release, non of this has chance to make it to the new game. Some things like the 'odds board' or the changed potential shouldn't be that time consuming or hard to implement. If they would hear about them even a month earlier they could have time to put some little tweaks in.

I believe the Red stars would indicate that the player in question has reached their full potential. Like Shattenkirk winning the Norris, he peaked and there was nowhere else to go so he plateaued. That would be my best bet anyways.

I LOVE the your idea of taking potentials off and just base the player growth on player's performance. I don't understand how player can be considered potential if he can't skate, shoot, defend or handle the puck. I'm talking about those 50 overall players with high potential.

Also I kind of agree and disagree with your idea about non-stopping simulation. I think it should be like in FIFA where you can choose to simulate ahead to a certain date but in the meantime you miss all the important messages and so on. And if you don't choose to skip everything you'd get messages from the players etc etc making every game seem more important

Contract Extensions in GM Mode. Example, P. Kane and Toews this year. They have a year left on their contract, and after Free Agency started, they were extended. In GM Mode, this gives you a great idea of what to expect at the draft. Or Trade for a person at the trade deadline that is in final year of contract, and extend them for 2 years. Surprised this isn't in it yet.

Johnny, from someone who lovesss GM mode I have some criticism too: -contracts are too easy. In free agency, there's a 99% chance the player you want will sign for you so long as you give him 1mil more than he's asking for. also, when resigning, players always accept 15% less than what they ask which is ridiculous because you can get 90r players to an amazing $6M when they're worth $8-$10. -player development is extremely dumb. new prospects will only improved based on what they are (PLY will only have 99 passing and good puck controler, SNP will only have 99 shooting) and 95% of players have 2 star physical 10 years in -better GM ai. 10 years in my team has better 4th liners than other teams have 1st liners. -better potential management. what happened to shattenkirk should never happen, ever. also i believe a player with 3 star potential who has a good season in juniors or ahl can jump to 3.5 stars or even 4.5 stars. i hate how locked potentials are.

Agree with all your gm mode ideas. Would love player personalities and I wish they made it harder to retain your roster. Imagine if players could weigh in on contracts, like if they wanted to play somewhere else, you would have to pay them more for them to stay. Or if they didn't want to stay, they wouldn't accept any offer you gave them. It'd also be cool if the salary cap didn't skyrocket by years 5 and 10, so it would be harder to retain a good playoff team.

I wish some form of team chemistry could be worked into Be a GM mode. Just like player types that match well together or "getting to know your line mates" could boost some small stats, or help you out in clutch situations. It could accumulate over the season so good line chemistry would help your team in the playoffs.

Thank you johnny! Some one finally understands how player progression should work. The only problem with that idea is players drafted in the later rounds, if you put them up on the first or second lines, would also get to be superstar status. Sure some may in reality, but chances are they probably won't. So when you have later picks, they can get better (I.e. Actually playing in the nhl) but not as fast or as efficient as early picks.

The difference between NHL and CIV 5 is the transparency of the simulation engine. Civ5 tells you exactly what is giving your army unit bonuses or penalties, while NHL does no such thing. NHL does not tell you what any of the attributes do for your character as an individual, nor does it give any clues as to what player type compositions or attribute distribution will work best for a team. EA leaves it to us to speculate what many of the attributes like endurance or poise really do for a player or a team in the sim or on the ice. There is no indications of what an enforcer on your team will do for you, if it even does anything, etc. I think they do this to create the illusion that the sim engine is based on a complex assessment of the matchup between the two teams, when really it may be something more simple like a roll of the dice with the odds slightly in favor of the team with the higher overall. It would be amazing if they showed something like Johnny suggested at 25:27 but I really think they don't do that because nothing that complex is actually going on in the simulation engine. They want you to think things like maybe having an enforcer on your team lowers my chance of getting injuries or maybe poise helps with luck in playoffs, but if it did, why wouldn't they tell us about it. EA needs to show some assessment of your team composition and the modifiers each player or line brings to the table! But the reason they don't do that is likely because nothing like that is going on and if they told us all what was actually going on in the sim engine it would reveal that many of the player types and attributes were pointless. There is so much potential in a GM mode style game. There could be all kinds of bonuses for team combinations and line combinations. Like having a line that's a SNP, PLY, PWF line could have a little bonus like +5% Off Awareness +5% Body Checking +2% Passing or something like that. There could be bonuses for having an all Swedish line, or a bottom six with all 4.5 star defensive category stats. Maybe having an older veteran on a line with some young guns would boost the younger guys stats a little bit. Or there could be penalties for certain lines, like all snipers on a line could give a penalty to some defensive stats for the team. There needs to be some incentive to build different types of lines and more flexibility with what type of team you can build. There really could be a so much more depth to the game mode where there is only ambiguity now.

Something I noticed a few minutes ago really pissed me off. I was playing a game in season mode and there was a faceoff in my zone. At this time I was on a 5-3 PK and wanted to switch up my defensive strategy, and all of a sudden I had apparently accepted a fight with Seabrook, because they're the same two buttons you use to instigate and change the strategies without hitting pause..

For fighting, I think both players should have a choice whether to fight or not to fight. Not just one player. Like a big hit could lead to a breakaway and the fight icon could come on and you lose your opportunity because the other player accepted a fight. I think in ALL game modes thats how it should be online and offline. Also players shouldn't lose the puck when the fighting icon comes up.

Okay last comment hopefully, i think players should be able to tell you "I dont want to play here, trade me" or "I wont sign with your team because i want to go somewhere i can win". It shouldnt just be highest bidder gets a player. For example, Patty Kane hits free agency year 2. Hes not going to go to a team with a good 1st line right winger, and hes probably not going to want to go to a bottom feeder team. I would like to see players sign contracts/ask for trades based on playing time, winning situation and other factors (Proximity to Home, Rival team, etc)
