I personally have no issue with a self-regulating league. I personally believe that when the players were allowed to help officiate by clocking people who did dirty stuff the game was more entertaining and also safer. Players are less likely to do the more damaging stuff like spearing, head shots, slew footing and such if theres a consequence other than losing their eqivalent to pocket change and sitting out for a few games.

Yet some other players should be looked at as repeat offenders but have never been given any disciplinary actions. Some players grow as they are in the league and then others get dirtier the longer they are there since they haven't been disciplined by the league.

When wilson hit sundqvist and aston-reese, the primary argument was that its wilsons responsibility to let off seeing that they werent ready for/expecting the contact. Ok. As a Caps fan I feel the need to say a few words about Tom Wilson. He's made some dumb decisions. That's really true. He's made some bad hits. But he's a good teammate, he can win fights, and he gets some unjust hate. Does anyone else remember the game where they gave Wilson a penalty for goaltender interference WITHOUT disallowing the goal just because he crashed the net? And to anyone cheering for Wilson or even someone like Marchand for "getting what he deserves," is it really any better than when they do it? I don't like seeing either give cheap shots, and I don't like seeing either of them receiving them either. I can't count the number of times I've sat in front of the TV thinking "What the hell are you doing Wilson?" I'm just as mad when he hits someone badly as when they do the same to him. I'll be the first to admit, I have my biases, but why would you cheer for anyone being hurt in hockey, be it Wilson or anyone else?

Shouldn't be a suspension on reaves. Wilson WAS looking at the direction of the hit and looked away at the last second. He is eligible to be hit considering he just had the puck. He is also skating directly into the hit. The fact that it's a "blindside " is partially because of Wilson. If ANYTHING it was a little late and should only be 2 minutes.

To call Wilson a repeat offender is an understatement. Make a hit when you can. That's part of the game. Blindsiding players off the puck has no place. The league obviously has not addressed the issue properly, so perhaps more plays like what Reeves put on him are the only thing that'll force him to change the way he plays?

I lost all respect for Reaves when he crosschecked Carlson in front of the net in the finals and the refs didn’t call anything. That play cost the Caps game 1 because he scored right after the crosscheck. Sure Wilson is a dirty player, but Reaves is basically suspended on a daily basis for cheapshots

The problem is not all of these are vagrant fouls. Just because a player lowers his shoulder before a hit, doesn’t mean it was intentional. A lot of times the other player wasn’t watching where he was going and the guy who lowered his shoulder was just protecting himself.

I think the NHL needs to solve this issue in a different way. Instead of a game ejection, the offending player needs to stay in the game. Let the victim's enforcer maul the shit of him on the next shift. You know, like it used to be handled.

Unless it's interference, I don't understand the call on a few of these. Getting hit from the blind side isn't illegal unless it's a headshot. Hits like 7:02 are nothing but shoulder. So unless the call is interference (late hit), I don't understand what the problem is...

that wilson guy. sure seems to like the blind side hit. wasnt he suspended like 4 times in under 2 years of games? ~i follow hockey pretty closely as a pens fan. but i kinda fail at following the league* if in 2 years you are suspended for hits to the head 4 times, it makes sense why the league wants to fight u. i dont want him hurt, but that many times in 2 years is ridiculous

Caps fan here and I personally love Tom Wilson, but even I can agree he's made some dirty hits and cheap shots in the past. He plays aggressively and while I do see that as a good thing in the grand scheme of things, it causes people to get hurt when he takes it too far (which is more often than I would like). But do I think that his playing style warrants people celebrating him getting hurt from a cheap shot? Absolutely not. He's a great player and I just hope one day he learns how to play fast and hard without seriously hurting someone.

Hits to back aka blindside hits are already illegal according to the book. It’s called in college all the time. Yet it’s never called or at least I have yet to see a penalty where it is explained for a blindside hit. They need to start calling blindside penalties and say it’s a blindside.
