6:01 - I have discovered that I know how to say "Madison Square Garden" in French. (I'd like to think that footage is not sped up at all.)

Up to about the 1950's, it was common place for defensemen to just stand frozen literally on the blue line and not move unless a forward came in really fast. When the Montreal Canadiens played the first game ever at Madison Square Garden, the NY Americans defense was so close to their goaltender on the opening faceoff because they knew Aurel Joliat and Howie Morenz just loved to go on a two on zero breakaway right from that faceoff !

That before the rule you can't pass forward? Also goalies were encouraged to stay standing up.

I wonder who the first NHL goalie was to take a puck in the chops?🤣 He was most likely the guy who invented goalie masks. Check out the newsboy cap on the goalie!

Fascinating to watch this. The equipment has changed but the moves have not. I'd like to see a team from back then up against a modern team. We assume the modern team would be better, but I'm not so sure. Thanks for posting.

I loved it when the commentary said, "The teams swing end to end like a pendulum." Their language was so different back then.

Kneeing is pretty bad, can easily be career ending, same with a hit from behind if it's into the boards. Elbows are bad too, can also cause concussions. The majority of those 3 types of hits are players going out of their way to throw them, knowing that there's a good chance that the other guy is gonna be hurt. Also the guys who leave their feet when throwing a check is also pretty dirty.
