Casey DeSmith with the comeback of his career. Sensational performance making I think 32/33 saves tonight. This was a STATEMENT win for Canucks, sweeping the Oilers and ensuring that all they need to do is win on Tuesday, and the Pacific Division is locked in! GO CANUCKS GO! Great game tonight in Edmonton.

DeSmith was solid, but this game should be a caution for the Canucks. Other than the last 10 min of the 2nd period, the Oilers dominated the game. The Canucks cannot keep counting on their back up goalies to play personal best night after night. If Demko returns from injury and immediately regains his mid-season form, they will be alright. But if not, they will be hard pressed to make it out of the first round.

With Demko, the Canucks are a great team. Without him, just a good team. The Oilers should be very comfortable with meeting the Canucks in the 2nd round. They dominated tonight, and without DeSmith playing his best game all year, the Oilers win this one comfortably. Demko will be back for the playoffs. If all goes well, they will survive Vegas while Demko regains his form. But if he falters, they could bow out early. Canucks are just not good enough to win without Demko at the absolute top of his game.

@@larspatriksson4744 Not sure if you watched the same game the rest of us did. Sure, there were points that the Oilers were dominating, but there were just as many points where the reverse was true; overall, a pretty even game, all things considered. As for the Vegas part, unless Dallas loses in regulation in their final game and the Canucks win their final 2 games (possible, but not very likely), there's no chance that they face Vegas in the first round, as it would be Dallas (best division winner) vs Vegas (lower wild card team). Even if Vegas won that series they'd be locked into the Central bracket so could only face the Canucks in the West Final, assuming both teams advanced that far.

@maekklyn doesn't matter if they care or not. Psychology is deeper than that. Unconscious doubt. The Hawks mental control over the Canucks is a perfect example. By the 2011 playoffs the nucks were a far far better team than that Hawks team but psychology allowed them to come back from a 3 - 0 deficit to push it to 7. Should have been an easy sweep and was probably one of the biggest reasons the Canucks ran out of gas and had key injury problems. Winning this game did matter. Don't kid yourself.

One of the greatest wins in Canucks history. They actually play better counterpunching & absorbing pressure. DeSmith was great. Considering how well Edmonton had been playing I thought they would give more of an effort, but the absence of 97 was too much to overcome. Still a very impressive road win against arguably the best team in the league.

Things I liked and didn't. like. The start wasn't great. Not surprising as you knew the Oil were going to come out flying. They did OK settling the game down but a few too many good chances from the Oil in the first 10. I liked the way the canucks slowly wrestled control of the game away from the Oilers. After that first 10 you could feel the shift in play. The Oil started to get fewer and fewer decent chances and the canucks basically had them going where they wanted to. By the mid way point I pretty much felt the game was the Canucks so long as no melt downs or lucky bounces. I loved DeSmith's rebound control. Just excellent. The Oil didn't get very many second chances. I don't like the canucks judgement that much right now compared to earlier in the year. They're still trying to force some passes in situations where they should be looking for the obvious clear. Too many times in this game they were trying for the perfect out and just turned it over without relieving the pressure. I like that they've been a pretty great team this season at being patient, and I don't want them to stop trying to maintain possession, but it's still a balance and sometimes you just gotta clear. They had a better sense of it earlier on and need to find that again. I did like that when they made those mistakes though, especially near the end of the game, they really really did a good job of not giving the Oil any good looks. It really looked by the third that even the Oilers knew they weren't winning this game. Overall a very very solid but not great game. Still a fair bit to clean up. But it's fantastic to win this and the psychological effects of sweeping this team could be huge if we happen to meet again in the playoffs. All these teams are basically even so it really comes down to discipline and psychology. And the most important thing....luck. The NHL is basically a pinball lucky league now and nobody wins a cup without a lot of lucky bounces. It's unfortunate but that's the way the game has evolved because of the cap.

why? this is the NHL. Teams lose all the time to teams they should or shouldn't beat. Fans are 20 years behind the times. There is no such thing as favorites anymore. All these teams are the same thing. The NHL is 90% luck and 10% discipline and psychology.
@doublestrokeroll
@doublestrokeroll 7 ай бұрын
@maekklyn yep...hockey has basically turned into pinball. It doesn't take away from the skills of the players...they're more amazing than they've ever been on average but as a game hockey has always been the game where luck plays the largest role. The cap has just amplified that even more where there just isn't anything separating teams anymore. So now in order to win a cup you need mostly luck, then discipline to your system, and some psychology.

@@owenHughes-nt8fn I actually don't like the parity that much. I think it's made the cup less special. Nobody outside the city that wins it really cares who wins it after a month or too. I bet most people couldn't name me the cup winner without looking if I just threw out a random year in the past 10. I'd like the NHL to ease up on the cap restraints so teams could keep a good group together a little longer. Not 80's type. I don't want 4 or 5 years of the same team. But I would like more of an NBA type setup where teams can move into and out of being legit championship teams for a few years and you get Warriors/Cavs type match ups. (Neither are "big market" teams too). With a few other teams being legit threats. But also having some distinction in "favorites". The 1 seed SHOULD be more than just an even money pick vs the 8th. Are the canucks going to beat the Preds or Knights? I sure as hell don't know. Flip a coin cause it could go any possible way.
