As another avs fan, I really think Avs would have lost that game if only Draisaitl would have been healthy. It was very limited what he was able to do on the ice and still somehow he was a meaningful part of oilers team. Clear example is how Draisaitl missed an open net with one timer. Then score was 3-1, I think. After the missed shot, he held his hurting wrist and went slowly back on the bench. I can't say I like the Edmonton team much at all, but I do wish for success for Mcdavid and Draisaitl as they truly deserve it.

As a Habs' fan, that goal from Lehkonen was awesome...magnifique if you will. But watching it just causes me pain...not because Montreal wasn't able to beat Tampa and win the Cup, but because the real star of that series-winning goal was *Philip Danault.* He made the perfect pass. And for whatever reason, Marc Bergevin wasn't willing to keep him in Montreal. Yeah, I know, Danault wasn't happy with his role as a defensive specialist, but I think if the price was right, he'd have stayed...and he'd have been used as a 2-way guy, especially considering the Kotkaniemi offer sheet (hindsight is 20/20). He was not only a big part of the reason the Habs scored that OT goal in game 6 vs Vegas...he was the reason they got there in the first place, shutting down all manner of superstars - Matthews, Marner, Connor, Stone, Pacioretty. Those guys all had TERRIBLE series vs. Montreal, and Danault was why. Price's play was not All-World in the 2021 playoffs...and yet it was good enough, because of the pizza man. Best of all, while offensive skills diminish a lot with age, defensive skills tend to stick around a lot longer, meaning that Danault will be a useful shutdown center for a long time to come. Plus, he proved this year that he can be offensively-dominant as well, scoring 27 goals in the regular season, and 3 in the playoffs. All you need to do is find him a linemate with whom he has some chemistry...and give him some PP time. I know that Danault wouldn't have helped the Habs into the playoffs this season...and he would have probably cost them the 1st-overall pick, so maybe it's for the best. I just think he would've been a good guy to have around in the long term.

The Lehkonen goal is similar to the Guentzel goal in the first round where he kicked it to himself. It JUST barely comes in line with the cross bar. As much as it may hurt, its a good goal.
@jessecollingwood10022 жыл бұрын
The cross bar also doesn’t matter because it wasn’t a goal. If a player directs a puck with a high stick in the course of a normal play then the point of contention becomes the players shoulders. With lekhonen being hunched over stretching with his stick and it looking like it still was under his shoulders then that’s all that matters. Now if the first shot had gone in then you can argue that it might have been over the crossbar but the ref would need to see irrefutable evidence to overturn.so basically the moment smith made the save it was no longer the crossbar that mattered. And the goal after was a separate play.

@darthollpheist11562 жыл бұрын
Even the announcers don't know the rules. That doesn't have to be below the crossbar because it wasn't a goal. It was below his shoulders. When it's not a goal, it's the player's shoulders. Like it is in USA hockey rules for all high-sticking plays. So, if the puck would've went in on the "high stick", it wouldn't have counted. But, because it didn't go in, the play can continue because it wasn't above his shoulders. So in reality, it would've been better for the Oilers if the puck would've just went right in on the deflection. Because it was blatantly over the crossbar but it doesn't matter because it didn't go in.
@jonmendelson11042 жыл бұрын
Just a side note, I've complained about the ESPN/TNT crew, but when the call was happening live on the US broadcast (forgot which channel it was) they were specifically commenting about the shoulder vs crossbar difference in this case. Someone explained it why it wasn't highstick during the OT goal. If it went in the net/goal, then the crossbar would have been the reference point. But it didn't went into the net, so the shoulder of the player became the reference point to determing if it was an highstick.
@cybore2132 жыл бұрын
I was confused as well, Steve and the game announcers were all talking about if the puck touched the stick above the crossbar, but it did not go in the net directly from that touch. So as you say, the reference point is the shoulder. Interesting though, if you slow down the playback, at around 12:15 you can see the puck above Lekonen's left shoulder.
@peterpike2 жыл бұрын
@@cybore213 -- Yes, but when you see the puck there, it hasn't yet touched the stick, and it disappears into Lehkonen's body. When it appears on the other side, it's clearly lower than his shoulder, but we don't have any angle that really shows the stick contacting the puck from an angle where you can determine the height of the puck off the ice. I think that because the on-ice call is good goal, and there's no way to prove it was a high stick before it got there, they wouldn't have overturned it any way. You have to actually show that the puck was hit too high, and from all the angles we have, it doesn't show that. Maybe Toronto has some other angles where they could see for sure, but my guess is it was too inconclusive to overturn the call.
@cybore2132 жыл бұрын
@@peterpike True, from that angle we cannot see the puck hit the stick. As you say, to overturn the call on the ice you need conclusive evidence. One more thing I just thought of, a high touch will be waved off if the puck is touched by an opposing player, and the puck clearly hit Smith.

I don't know why there was so much concern over the alleged high stick. It hit Lehkonen's stick at or around shoulder height but Smith made the save from that deflection (right pad) and then Lehky cashed in the rebound. Had the puck gone from Lehkonen's stick to another Avalanche player (or even if he corralled the puck without Smith making a save), then the play could be called dead, but, much like grabbing the puck out of mid-air and putting it on your stick blade is not a hand pass, this was a perfectly cromulent goal. Had it deflected in from Makar's initial shot, then an argument can be made for disallowing. Let's cherish the rare instances where the refs (and the monkeys in the control room) got it right. Good goal.
@jkliao64862 жыл бұрын
No, because the puck is deflected off Smith into Lehkonen, if it's above the shoulder, it will still be whistled down as a high-stick. It's only when the puck is batted by Smith into an Avs player, the high-stick call will be washed out. In this case, it's just the evidence is too inconclusive to overturn the call.
@HotBranch2 жыл бұрын
@@jkliao6486 We'll have to agree to disagree. Smith was lined up on the puck from Makar's original shot. Lehkonen deflected it down and the puck hit Smith's right pad thus causing a rebound. Per rule 80, the high stick contact (if the stick was above the shoulder) is washed out by the pad save and Lehkonen is free to shoot the rebound into the net. The only thing that is unclear is whether contact is considered above where Lehkonen's shoulders should be or where they are as he's leaning forward. Either way, per rule 80, Smith's save on the deflection cancels out the high stick contact.

@@jkliao6486 Rule 80.1 (i) in the official rules here: cms.nhl.bamgrid.com/images/assets/binary/326142322/binary-file/file.pdf "When a puck has been contacted by a high stick, the play shall be permitted to continue, provided that: (i) the puck has been batted to an opponent (when a player bats the puck to an opponent, the Referee shall give the “washout” signal immediately. Otherwise, he will stop the play)." Admitedly, the time between the high stick contact, Smith making the save, and the goal being scored is barely long enough for the ref to move his arms at all.
@HotBranch2 жыл бұрын
The initial shot from Makar did not contact Smith first, he was reaching for it with his glove, but it was deflected before he could snag it and that deflection went to his right pad.

I was really hoping that Smith Would have made that final save with the stick so we had a chance to visit the Paddle Save Emporium again. It’s been a while.

Don’t worry steve about messing up on the Lehkonen goal call. Your brain was just processing the idea of being blown away.

The true hat pick for Lehkonen's OT winner is the Avs radio announcer (I think radio) giving the call, look it up if you get a chance lol

Not only did Smith make an insane save... he robbed Nichushkin of a hat trick.

If that was a high stick, then Blake Coleman didn't kick the puck in the net. Not even the playoffs can escape karma.

Steve, which dictionary did you use to translate Lehkonen? Or how did you end up translating Lehkonen to clutch? 🤔Just a friendly Finn here to tell you that Lehkonen doesn't really mean anything in Finnish. Producer Drew you can add another dang-it to Steve's list of dang-its.😂

It hit the other team first and he was first to regain control. It's the same rules as a hand pass.

The hilarity of Steve calling that goal, not even taking another breath as he questions himself and basically does a one man therapy session over the ensuing next few minutes

You brought it up so... NO... high sticking would have been above the shoulders being as the puck didn't go straight in....even if it had gone straight in, stick was right at cross bar level and would've counted anyway.... you'd think they'd put a camera that sees the whole ice at cross bar level right behind the net... even more curious though... they now track the puck right?... speed and on replays they have a tracer so why cant they tell how high off the ice the puck is?....
