Detroit's transition from Yzerman/Fedorov to Datsyuk/Zetterberg was the key to their success while Lidstrom was apart of both generations and dominated the decade in Norris and other trophies.

Scarecrow7 A fun fact that I realized is that Lidstrom has been apart of all 6 presidents trophy Wings teams which is obviously the most, and Lidstrom also never missed the playoffs in his career, as I believe his rookie year is when the streak started.

Carolina's '05-'06 team can be considered underrated because it took them 7 games to beat a Buffalo team without their top 4 defensemen playing in the conference finals, and then had to go to 7 games against the 8th seeded Oilers. Still a Cup championship and you cannot discount that in itself, but when you measure up to the other champions, they lack that extra bump.

Chris R my introduction to hockey was the 2002 Stanley Cup Playoffs...I was a kid just getting into sports in NC when the Hurricanes were going on that big playoff run. I was devastated by the loss to your Wings, but in retrospect I realized that ‘02 team is still one of the best ever assembled. Lidstrom, Yzerman, Hull, Hasek, Federov, Shanahan, Larionov, Robitaille, and Chelios are all in the Hall. They also had a young Pavel Datsyuk and other players I remember like Kirk Maltby. Plus Scotty Bowman was coaching. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a better team.

Darren McCarty said recently that the wings won in 08 in spite of babcock and lost because of him in 09 and I believe it. You didn’t have datsyuk the first 5 games of the series which was a factor but you were still up 3-2. You took hossa from them. There’s no reason the wings shouldn’t have won cups in 07, 08, 09. I think if there was a coach the players respected a bit more behind the bench, they would have. They were absolutely loaded. Also holland was a dumbass for letting hossa walk so easily.

MikeG82 still should have won when you were up 3-2. If you rewatch the 08 series, that should have been a sweep. There were long stretches where Detroit dominated Pittsburgh. And that was with hossa.
@nrmproductions1150
@nrmproductions1150 4 жыл бұрын
Randy Randerson The 09 series was the perfect storm of the wings being hurt and the Penguins getting some help from the league with Colin Campbell reversing Malkins automatic suspension for game 3. Datsyuk was hurt but he did not play well in those playoffs, Lidstrom was a god playing through a ruptured testicle, but Hossa was an absolute ghost throughout the entire playoffs, it made sense to retain Franzen instead because he was a beast with 25 playoff goals in 2 years. No excuse to lose that series. The wings were up 3-2 and then scored only two goals the rest of the series: Kris Draper and Jonathan Ericsson. That’s the short answer

The Wings had 3 years in a row of losing critical game 5s at home when the series was tied 2-2. There’s no excuse for that especially when you have one of the greatest teams of all time. @brianhum8765

It's how hockey goes some time; sometimes you just hit a bunch of bad luck. They looked well on their way to beating LA in '01 but lost Yzerman and Shanahan to injury for almost the whole series, they could've easily won in '03 or '06 if not for running into super hot goalies in Giguere and Roloson. By NHL rule Malkin should've been suspended for game 3 in '09 after getting the instigating penalty in the last 5 minutes and without his 3 assists the game he would've been suspended, that series is probably 3-0, in '07 they were less than a minute from going up 3-2 on Anaheim (who won the cup and were the other best team left) before that terribly unlucky goal that hit Lidstrom's stick on the ice and went straight up over Hasek. She is a cruel mistress sometimes those NHL playoffs.

Hasek departed in 01 from Buffalo. The sabres teams post lock-out were some of the better teams to start that era of hockey. Pre-lock out, the team was re-tooling a bit. Toward the end of the decade they started to slide, but they had Miller, Vanek, and Pommenville all in their prime.

Dildo Swaggins I thought so too, but you have to remember they went to a conference final in 2001 before the rebuild. That means they made 3 of 9 conference finals in the decade and appeared in 14 playoff series. Despite those bad 3 years they made the playoffs 5 out of nine years and only once did not win a playoff series. The math adds up.

Tbh melnyk actually saved the team in 2003 when he bought it. I’m not saying he’s not an idiot now but back then he was much less hands on

Part of me was surprised by how high the Blues were. I became old enough to really start watching hockey near the end of this decade when the Blues were awful.

Jay I remember the days the arena was half full at the end of the decade. Not all that long ago.

I don’t think the rangers should be this low after the lockout they missed the playoffs once hank came in that year and the team changed. I know they didn’t have deep runs because they lost to the penguins a lot but they were still a solid team the second half of that decade

I am shocked Chicago was 24th tbh, they were arguably the worst team from 2003-2007, like almost unwatchable during that time.

The devils had a much tougher division then Detroit, even the board shows that. The Islanders where better than Columbus, the Rangers were better than Nashville and Chicago, the THIRD best team in the Dev's division Philly where miles better than Detroits SECOND best ST Louis, and there was no equivalent of the Pens for Detroit to deal with. It's a lot easier to qualify for the play-offs on a regular basis when your division is always weak.

Fallen Devonish It’s still not really a debate, Detroit made the playoffs with over 100 points every year of the decade, won 2 cups, 4 presidents trophies, led the west 6 years, won their division every single year, had two of the top 3 single season teams of the decade, and had the most Hall of Fame players. They were easily the best of the league

Vegas would be in the 2010's. The 2000's ended in 2010 because it would've been 10 years. Vegas formed around 2018.

I mean it’s a great list but top ten would be some changes but the way they still are now are fine and I could see why personally I’d have 1.Nj 2.avs 3.wings 4.ducks 5. Pens 6. Stars 7.sharks 8.sens 9.canes 10.flyers but great list either way
