Clint Benedict really was the best goaltender of his age. This marked three Cups in four years for Ottawa.

Vesina died and it became a memorial trophy the year after. He might have been a popular player in the league but it was definitely a memorial.

Are you kidding Shannon? Your history of modern hockey series is awesome. I feel like I understand the game so much more, after watching your channel for a year, and I've been a lifelong hockey fan. Thanks for putting this series together, and I hope your channel keeps growing.

Loving this series. I'm very confident in my knowledge of the game as it's played on the ice, but I've always been lacking in my knowledge of the game's history. This is helping tremendously.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Vezina donated the award to the league. Art Ross wasn't the most prolific offensive player either.

Yep. Clint Benedict lived to a ripe old age and passed away in 1976. The Vézina Trophy being awarded in 1927 for the first time, months after Georges died of tuberculosis.

Patch 83 - Yeah the Vezina is a memorial trophy in memory of Vezina. He must have been liked because Montreal kept paying him even when he wasn't part of the team. Kind of a classy move by Montreal really. It's a sad story but probably help to sell the game at it's early stages. That's a pretty good story to have in the papers if you ask me.

Clint Benedict was one of the greatest goalies born in the 1800s, but I would say that George Hainsworth, born a year later, but was a late bloomer, may have been better. For the 4 years where their careers overlapped, Hainsworth had the better GAA in three of them with the first year being basically tied. Granted, the Canadiens were the better team, so that may have given Hainsworth the advantage, although, Benedict was known to play drunk, so he he probably could have played even better head to head. P.S. Vezina had the sentimental advantage of dying while playing, so the award was namedposthumously in his honour. Also, Benedict's drinking problems were an embarrassment to the league at the time.
