NHL VS European Hockey fans

It's a shame, that one of the most important things is missing in this video - the sound. Mainly in the european part, because even if the pictures and short clips are looking great, the actual chanting and "singing" of the crowd is one of the main differences between North America and European style. In north america, most teams have only one or two things like "go team x go" etc and you can hear it only few times in the match etc, whereas most european fans have dozens of them and they are chanting and roaring the entire match and it makes the atmosphere so great. Even though i would really like to visit NHL match live one day, because it is special in some ways and even the atmosphere there can be great (but really different) i am glad that i live in europe (when it comes to hockey)

I went to an NHL game, they told me we would be at the "rough" section with the "crazy" fans. It was 2-3 guys occasionally shouting in a moderate way. Lame support but otherwise amazing to be there.

Football is the biggest and one of the oldest sports in Europe. The supporter culture has crossed over to hockey as well. In Sweden, Germany, Austria and Switzerland where football is huge as well as hockey, a lot of supporters follow both sports and bring the same passion that has been a part of football over to hockey. Flags, scarves, banners and chants are a massive part of football and hockey in Europe. And sports are more of a working class pastime. While you do get suits in the stands in Europe, the clubs have gone out of their way to have cheaper tickets so that everyone can enjoy it. The clubs put a huge emphasis on fans and fan culture since having a loud crowd at home is intimidating for the visitors and creates an exciting atmosphere.

This is part of the reason why I refuse to watch NHL and just stick to European hockey. It's not all business, the fans are better, and I like the big ice game more anyway. And I'm from the States...I remember pulling an all nighter for one of Medveščak's games last year on the road against Amur, something I never did for an NHL team. If I want North American hockey, I will take college any day. It's the only version of the sport here in North America with passion.

You have no idea. yes the fans are not so into it but thats just 70% the other 30% are 100% behind the Team just as any other european fan, you may do not understand the NHL system. But those in our European league is corrupt, i mean look at it how the same teams keep winning just like in soccer the team with the most money gets the best players (i am no dirty commie ;) ) the NHL system is the most fairest with the entry draft every year for the young skaters. I am from Europe and a fan of the New York Islanders for 15 years, staying awake untill 5 in the morning to watch games is very regular to me. You cant say NHL is shit because its obviously diffrent hockey than European. The smaller ice makes the game faster and more attractive too

In USA American football and baseball and basketball are the main sports, there are lots of Hockey teams in the US but Hockey barley gets any footage I wish they broadcast some European hockey games too. I am Canadian and here hockey is not only entertainment it's a way of life, I really want to come to Europe and see a European hockey game because it seems like a really awesome environment to be in.

It's pretty good, but the SHL is slightly better overall I think. It's hard to tell because most NLA, SHL and Liiga teams could mix in one single league without much difference. The KHL has excellent top teams but the bottom ranking is pretty bad... The first 5-7 teams are strong and the rest just fill the remaining places. In my opinion: SHL ≥ NLA ≥ Liiga > DEL ≥ Czech Extraliga. The KHL would extend from above the SHL to the DEL I guess.

I think CHL has shown that Swiss teams are on average slightly below Swedish and Finnish teams. If they formed a common league there would surely be a few Swiss champions as well but outside ZSC, HCD, SCB I don't think any Swiss teams would be on top of Sweden/Finland over a season... not yet. I hope we soon will! Greetings from Switzerland :) oh and about KHL I think we see that at Spengler Cup often, their teams tend to have world class offense but their defense often looks weak even against a better DEL team.

if you want to see the difference just look at tis video or some other videos from fans from different teams in Europe. Just search something like Europe Hockey Ultras or Sweden, Germany and Switzerland Hockey Ultras. You will see some great fans, stuff you just would not see in NHL.

If the fan base in the NHL is old (for teams like the Rangers, Canadiens, Penguins, etc.) the season ticket fans are mostly older and richer (to afford the high ticket prices). They show extra enthusiasm when the games are exciting or for the playoffs but don't go crazy at other times.

From a European Football and Hockey supporter, I'd say the only reason why NHL doesn't have as amazing fans is because tickets are so expensive and the only ones who come are the one who barley know about it and spend a lot on seats.

+Karl Wilger Not really. The prices for seats in the NHL starts by 40-45$... You have to pay quiet the same for expample in the DEL. The main point is that European stadiums have much more stand places than seats. Nobody is dieing in Europa if you have to stand on your legs for 3 hours. ;)

The problem is people here don't get into professional sports like Europeans do, or even college sports for that matter. And theres a lot of BS rules because security is totally loose butthole. Also we don't have Ultras like Europeans do. I'm CRAZY about hockey and football here but there aren't really hooligan groups like gate 13 here :). P.S- I've always wanted to see a Celtics vs Rangers game in Scotland, heard it's one of the best expienced in the world.

Do you have any idea what kind of an impact that has on the teams when we do it? Do you have any idea what the players feel like if they are down with 0-3 against the rivals and we scream "We love you anyway!" ? Or what it feels like when a team gets eliminated and has to play in the second highest league and still having thousands of fans comming there to cheer for their team. You guys act like if you are going to a consert. Here our teams is mostley of boys from the same province as the team.

I think it has to do alot with the diff team structure between Europe and NA. The pro teams in NA are only Pro teams. You can't play for them from the age of 5 up all the way to the senior pro team like you can in Europe. You get closer to the team if play for them. In Europe the same club would also have teams in many diff sports (all ages) which also brings more ppl closer to the club. Also diff regarding the pro teams in NA.

I really hope NHL adds European team (aka team that has home arena located in Europe) one day. It would be awesome. Altough if they do that, they propably should add at least 2 European teams and not just 1 - or maybe even entire division of Europe located teams or something. Its not like Europe does not have enough players, 22.5% of players in NHL are from Europe - lowest it has been since 1998-1999. Could even be entire division. 1 in Sweden, 1 in Finland, 1 in Czechia, 1 in Germany, and if Russia participates then they would have at least one team as well.
