At the shut off what causes the tone of the engine to change? Do you go back to running straight methanol to burn off any nitro or something? Why does it sound like the engine is increasing rpm right before it shuts off? I always thought the nitro and meth were pre mixed right before putting it into the fuel cell subsequent to a warmup or pass and the engines were started on alcohol. Is that how it used to be done?

The fuel is all pre-mixed. Once its on Nitro, were on 90%ish until its off. During the shut down, there is still fuel in the system after the shutoff valve, especially in the fuel rails themselves. Takes a while to run through that. The increase in RPM is the engine leaning out while its going through that remaining fuel. Most fuel cars have this. On big show cars its common to see the crew unscrew the fuel line at the barrel valve to more efficiently make sure the engine cuts off for this same reason.
