The Health Service Ombudsman for England has accused hospitals of ‘cover-up culture’ - burying evidence about poor care which led to deaths which could have been avoided. Rob Behrens CBE steps down from his post today after seven years in the role. He warns reputation management is being put above honesty about medical negligence - and that avoidable deaths are too common in maternity care and mental health. He’s also accused the NHS of doing ‘dreadful’ and ‘cynical’ things to obstruct families’ access to full facts about a relative’s death - including lying and concealing evidence.

I am a nurse and I challenged staff on the ward where I was treated with sepsis few weeks ago. They lied to me, they reported me to consultant who told me that I have anxiety. I’ve been a nurse for 30 years, they can’t trick me. My temperature was up and down and they were saying this isn’t true. They just tried to get rid of me as I was in the hospital for 2 weeks. Too long for them, they had enough of me, of my temperature spikes, so wanted to send me home. Different hospital didn’t see my brain tumor for years even if it was huge. It will cost nhs money but costed me health which I won’t get back even if they pay me hundred thousand of pounds.

If this had been in the US, everyone would have been sued for everything they were worth. Disgusting that this woman had to be subjected to this type of neglect.

awful. My dad was showing blatant signs of delerium after barely sleeping 90+ hrs, he was hallunicating and got violent, there were posters everywhere about what to look out for with delerium in the corridors for staff, & he was blacklisted by agency staff and other nurses, the head nurse apologised and was shocked at the treatment as she was the only decent one.

My heart goes out to her and this is a true story of negligence. There has been, over the past 3 years far more than 11,000 excess deaths per year. The office of national statistics has recently changed the way excess deaths are calculated, which has brought the figures down, why? (Check for yourself,it's baffling). Putting the blame on the nhs will hopefully get doctors and nurses to come forward and give there reasons for far far more people dying because they are not to blame.

Not surprised about the NHS, they are scary people. NHS needs urgent reform, and future staff to be vetted with more care.

I caught an individual hospital doctor doing things they should not have done, intentionally harming, but I have no idea how to to contact Ombudsmen or where to turn to. I've been warned by other patients not to report it to the hospital nor the police because when they did it went badly for those patients. And my report to the GMC was sidestepped. So I don't know who to go to. That individual is still working in the hospital. What the individual did will lead to deaths.

My local hospital when I was poorly and gone back in for the second time with in two weeks of my first admission, the a&e dr gave me a drug that he shouldn’t have with out asking my consultant or my consultant colleagues does he give it to me and now it’s done damage but the worse bit is he didn’t put it on the drug charts that it was administered yet my consultant has said it was administered to me to have the affects it’s done there’s always going to be a culture of cover ups

Quite often, staff are afraid to speak out because they do not believe their concerns will be properly investigated or overseen by any independent person, but they feel they may suffer detriment themselves - all because this is what they see happening in NHS over recent years, so this is a rational fear. Some report actually being silenced by threats or gagging actions from their employers. If you know of such a case and are being prevented from speaking out, please do contact one of the healthcare unions or look up the 'Chris Day' case or 'Justice for Doctors' on the internet.

In my case a consultant Mr Owen Owens left in polyp with the potential to become cancerous. I asked for a 2nd opinion that consultant conferred with Mr Owen Owen's. No more NHS help offered re this matter permitted. 13 years of pain and suffering! I almost bled out. Again the Luton and Dunstable hospital Nothing wrong. Opinion 2 / nothing wrong. This time I screamed and shouted! A nurse at the Lister cared Victoria Flynn she had the guts to stand up to a consultant. I finally after 13 years of pain / bleeding and lost employment had the polyp removed. Its ruined the last 13 years of my life. I hope others come forward about Mr Owen Owen's.
