Only the other day Spud wouldn't hear a peep against NHS management, but it's fine to hear all these stories about how horrible the public are. In hospital you're going to have to deal with all kinds of people, the mentally ill, drunks, drug addicts. We hear how everyone is supposed to be dementia friendly now, but is that just selective? Is that just for the polite ones who are a bit confused. Spud is paving the way for the NHS to be selective in who they treat here which is a very dangerous path to go down.

He went straight into a tirade saying I was the reason why his children do not have work and that I was taking their jobs. The white NA who was with me at that time was shocked to witness this and I answered by saying, “ Excuse me, what does your children do? Did you send them to school? There are still a lot of nursing jobs open for them if they want to. As a 73 year old white man I found this exremely depressing. I'm used to defending my generation from "blame game" comments in the political channels and usually have arguments against whatever statement I am disagreeing with but when she said specifically that older people acted this way I felt my heart sink. She had no political agenda, just real life experiences that brought her to that conclusion. I've always thought myself somewhat atypical of my generation since my youth but never more so than after hearing that story. I'm so sorry these dedicated people in particular but also any others have to endure such abuse, especially from people who ought to have lived long enough to know better. Maybe it's different here in Scotland where as a country we all feel marginalised but I don't see that level, or indeed any such discrimination in my day to day life. Or maybe I don't see it because I'm not the target so the subtler attacks go unnoticed.

You're on the cusp of Silent and Boomers. Not great. We know it's not all of you but you're waaaaaaaaay more right wing than anyone else. Like by a big margin. You're also overwhelmingly more likely to have grown up in pure why*e areas/go to school w/them etc. that doesn't help. You're the least supporting of progressive social issues/most bigoted overall. It's just a fact statistically. That doesn't mean there isn't any of that in our generations and it doesn't mean we won't get there. You're just the worst. Age definitively plays a role. Brain calcifies, people get more reactionary. It will be interesting to see the impact of education though, it's quite different from your day but I suspect there will always be that rightward shift of a certain percentage of people who used to be moderate or progressive.

I can definitely verify that it is completely different in Scotland! It’s culturally so opposite to England and Wales and I have travelled around the UK, working as a Nurse mainly in specialist areas. The reason I now live in Scotland is because of issues related to what my colleagues have talked about. To be honest, living here in Scotland is like a breath of fresh air! Your generation are willing to have the challenging conversations and learn. They are not afraid to ask questions that may be uncomfortable for them. What I have found so intriguing and wonderful is the intelligent dialogue that this creates for people like me of diverse cultural mixes and also for my colleagues too. The breadth of conversations up here in Scotland makes me feel as if I am welcomed and being pranked at one job I went to for quite some time, told me that I belong here and I have to say, the last 2 years are the happiest I have been in my 31 year career.

Being NHS doctor, it’s story of almost every day of our lives inside and outside hospitals. Some patients even refuse to talk to you because your accent is different despite they come in critical condition and you are the only one who is responsible for their urgent care. I remember when I was in Portsmouth, working as junior doctor there in October 2019 when hate and sentiments were at peak against Europeans and immigrants due to 2019 elections. I had habit to talk to my mom most of the days after job because of time difference, while walking back to my home, I was punched by some goons because I was speaking a different language. We came to UK legally, following the laws and regulations, passing UK license exams which are one of the most difficult exams in the world, competed doctors in UK in interviews to get a position and still we are struggling to be accepted. However, majority of our patients are sweet and they are grateful for what we do for them. We will remain here for the smile of those patients which we get when they are recovered and going back home.

This colleague did his undergraduate degree at the university and then was given a job as an academic (no previous teaching experience or any journal publications) which always baffled me ... then the university funded his PhD which he got without any corrections within 3 years which again shocked me. Following his PhD he was then named the best lecturer at the university and given an award at the age of 26. I left that institution and I can understand how other people from other disciplines feel when there is blatantly so much disrespect and its only going to get worse.

Some residents would actually say they don’t want to be treated by “black” nurses and some of them would actually ask “black” nurses and care assistants NOT to go in their rooms!!! Such is life, and some of us had to endure this type of treatment just because we love the job of looking after others who aren’t as healthy or young as we are.
