Hi! I made a mistake here! When I said in the video I'm sorry I didn't notice my English mistake before uploading! 日本は 駅が きれい (にほんは えきが きれい) I said "You make Japan subject" But I was meant to say "You make Japan topic" by using は particle. With this sentence, は is Topic marker and が is indication the subject! So にほんは is Topic and えき is the subject! So I should have said "You make Japan topic" by using は particle. But I used the word "Subject" where I needed to say "Topic" in English! Again, I'm sorry for the mistake. It is very unprofessional. I will try to check my English more carefully before uploading from next time!
@ozthekeymaster3 жыл бұрын
It is NOT very unprofessional! You are NOT unprofessional. EVER! Normally mistakes don't matter. It's just the Topic vs Subject issue - it's a nightmare for English learners of Japanese because there's no real equivalent in (normal everyday) English. 申し訳ございません!

It's not unprofessional at all, don’t worry about that. It's professional that you added a clarifying note!

And also maybe ここで ここに but I guess just the koko part and the rest is what Mike explained in here lol
Another verb that takes the に particle which is often missed by learners is 勤める (つとめる), "to work for". It helps to remember that if you rather translate it as "to be employed by", which stresses that it's a "state" rather than an "action", and thus takes the に particle.
@johncarmichael31842 жыл бұрын
Yes but just to make things fun , 働くtakes the でparticle. Don’t complain. English is just as crazy 🤣

I wish my classes were this clear. It really helps to have this stuff explained in English as it's introduced in Japanese. Immersion classes where they only speak/teach in the foreign language is only effective if you're learning slowly over multiple years--like when we were children.

The way I initially learned the difference between に and で was that に means “in/on” and で means “by using” For example: Nihon ni benkyou shimasu. I study in Japan. But for de, it's like this Gakko de basu e ikimasu. I go to school by way of/using the bus Another example is hashi de tabemasu. I eat by using chopsticks. So as said in the video, で is used with actions, while に is used in reference to location.

I had an especially hard time learning that I should use に with 乗る rather than を. It feels so weird that it's "電車に乗ります" for riding the train and "電車を使います" for using the train. To remember I think of it like I'm riding ON (に) the train.

14:18 This is the first time I’ve realized that this is a situation where the roles of English and Japanese switch. Normally Japanese is context heavy and English has dedicated grammar to specify information. This time the で and the に tell you more info about the sentence. Whereas English’s “in” does both and you have to use context to understand what the meaning is. A bit of a “ah ha” moment for me.

@SelcraigClimbs3 жыл бұрын
I can answer the first two So 1) yes that example is pretty much fine with the particles. But in the example you are actively writing the report so 書く needs to be in continuitive 書いています 2) again particle is fine but I think if you wanted to say "please write in your notebook" 書く will become 書いてください 3) I only know 止まる and not the other one so I can't help there ごめんね🙇
@SelcraigClimbs3 жыл бұрын
Well I've just seen it in the video and now I get what you meant 泊まる not 止まる (easy mistake) vs 滞在する, 泊まる is for staying overnight (or for a few nights) at a house or hotel etc. 滞在 is to stay (sojourn/stay in a vacation sense)

A few years ago when I was in Japan (I miss Japan and wish I could go again, but that's another story!), I made a "ni" mistake. My friend and I went into a Starbucks, and he ordered a drink, while I stood aside and waited for him. The barista asked me what I wanted, so I replied, "あ、友達にまってます。" Having overheard this exchange by cell phone, my friend's bilingual Japanese friend corrected me: "友達をまってます。" She asked me why I'd used "ni," and I replied (very reasonably I thought), "Because in English it's not a direct object. You don't 'wait your friend,' you wait for your friend." Now I guess what I actually said was that I was standing on my friend while waiting for something. :)
