Niagara Falls: Waterfall between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario | New York State and Canada

Niagara Falls is a shared treasure between the United States and Canada. Waters drain from Lake Erie down the Niagara River. They spill down the falls and then continue on to Lake Ontario.
The falls spill some 170 feet. On the Canadian side, there is Horseshoe Falls. On the American side, there is the American Falls.
The Niagara River was a fault line between cultures. On the Canadian side were the Huron, and on the American side the Iroquois. During colonial times, the French held Canada, and the British the future United States.
Fort Niagara is in Youngstown, New York. Fort George and Fort Mississauga are at Niagara-on-the-Lake. Fort Erie is on the Canadian side where Lake Erie drains into the Niagara River.
A battle was fought near Niagara Falls at Chippawa during the War of 1812.
Niagara Falls was visited by Father Louis Hennepin in 1678 who provided the first western description of the falls.

Love hearing the roar of the falls at the open and close of this video. When you stand along the bank of the Niagara River just before the falls, the sound is deafening, and the raw power is almost terrifying.

For no related reason, I was looking up the average depth of Lake Erie the other day. Boy is it shallow! Ontario is smaller in surface area but holds more water because it is much deeper on average. Apparently water moves through Erie the fastest of any of the Great Lakes, as if it were simply a (big) widening in a river. BTW, thanks from down here in Pennsylvania to our Canadian neighbors for being so terrific over the years. Love y'all! We need your sanity now more than ever. And what's the name of that huge waterfall up near Quebec? Saw it once, wow!

A lesser known, but equaly wonderful is the Cataratas do Iguaçu (Iguaçu Falls) in the frontier between Brasil, Argentina and Paraguai

I would not say lesser known, in my mind the three big falls Niagara, Iguaçu and the Victoria falls are equally known around the world. I dissagree on the equally wonderfull. I’ve been to Niagara and Iguaçu. And no offence to the magificent Niagara falls but Iguaçu dwarfs them in both size and beauty.

@@amotaba I am German. I spend some time for work in Curitiba. On my last trip I added some days vaction and took a bus to Foz do Iguaçu. I spend a day at the Argentinian side and a day at the Brazilian side. Both are very different. In Argentina you have the felling to be within the falls. In Brazil you are on top. Take the time to go there.

Some "basic" physics concepts are sometimes counterintuitive. Folks are used to things falling from up to down, and it's easy to see how somebody might like at a 2D map and apply the "up/down" scheme they see each day to an overhead map.
