The failure is far deeper than that of history professors. Kudos to you for acknowledging your part. The failure is primarily and more damagingly on parents who failed to create, teach and develop values their children. “The Greatest Generation” is a myth. These fighters came home too tired to raise their kids, focusing instead on economic success. In 20 years, the boomer children of the WWII victors gave us the student free speech movement, flower power, and the death of God. This inane set of worldviews blossomed as the anarchists carefully focused on tearing down western civilization, while being overlooked by those who knew better. We are now at the end, the logical conclusion, of the neglect.

Well said. Until people realize that INDIVIDUAL human rights are more important than ascribed/assigned/imaginary 'group' rights and responsibilities, it will be impossible to have true free speech, therefore democracy, therefore freedom. Why shouldn't every human have the same rights and responsibilities? It's insane to ascribe group membership to people and then try to give them special rights, or worse, make them responsible for the imaginary group's past actions. Some losers just need so badly to be a part of a group though - that explains the pro-Hamas protests in spite of their atrocities.

For a Western democracy to function at a high level, it's necessary to channel people's better attributes from the start, otherwise, the center will not hold. For an autocratic regime to remain in power, they need only channel people's worst motives (e.g., envy, vindictiveness, fear, complacency, etc.), so the scales would seem to be tilted in favor of the latter.
@LearnThaiRapidMethod2 ай бұрын
The underlying problem is that authoritarianism has taken hold in nearly all democratic countries by dint of the autocratic power of multinational or large national corporations, with their huge financial and logistical resources and vested interests in government institutions (lobbying, private health, judiciary, policing & prisons) and hold over the media (now becoming almost completely centralized, a “capitalist” version of the state control exerted in Russia, China, Iran/Qatar, and N.Korea. Governments kowtow to companies like Amazon, Pfizer, Nestle, etc. They turn a blind eye to blatant misinformation in their marketing campaigns and product labelling, the allow food companies to bulk up their foods with sugars and palm oils, they allow drugs companies to dictate prices and decide what drugs are available on the market (without consequences) and to influence the medical models (synthetic drugs over natural remedies, whole foods and preventative measures). And they allow companies to dictate employment practices, and to outsource labor so as to control the cost of labor & restrict choices in the local labor markets. And don’t get me started on property and housing (and the manipulation of mortgages and the value of property, which bears no relationship to any measure of real value). Even the Chinese joined in on the property pyramid scams.

@michaelhelperin44252 ай бұрын
In so short a clip the explanation is inevitably incomplete. In his book War of the World, Feguson goes deeper, identifying factors that predict society going astray. Other authors -- Jane Jacobs, Robert Putnam, ... have examined this, too. I cannot blame the teachers of history alone. It is much easier to absorb the lesson when your grandparents and their friends tell you about the War, and its memory informs even your play, when institutions are strong, and when NORMATIVE threat is low -- that last part being the explanation put forth by Karen Stenner in The Authoritarian Dynamic. There may be a generational factor of some kind. The media certainly play a role. Education is only one part of the explanation.

@Yamamono9090 I think your first point may apply to a small subset of the group in question, surely, but unlikely to be the case for all of them. The assertion hinges too much upon speculation. You make a better second point. That is indeed the interpretation by much of the public who are unlikely to be so well versed on this topic, and it may indeed be the case. I'm by no means an expert in this area, and I consider myself a big defender of Western values, but from my perspective, which is shared by some of the students in question, is that Israel, and by extension the US and western nations, generally, are doing a disservice to the message of western values by ignoring abuses of international law and human rights committed by one of their own for the sake of ensuring Israeli security. When Western nations do not hold their own to account to the very values they hold dear, it's difficult for people who belong to other non-western nations, who may consider themselves part of the Global South or elsewhere, to subscribe to the model that western nations are trying to promote and that's the big issue for many of those students who have taken to the streets.

And who created a law that assures that the right to exercise national self-determination is unique to only them. The year prior to October 7th Israel demolished 949 Palestinian homes so jews in Israel could build Jewish-only settlements beyond Israel's border.

Race loyal people: that allows converts of any race and is majority brown-skinned God’s chosen people: Chosen by God for a specific mission and responsibility (not a superiority claim) Ethno-state: while majority Jewish, Israel citizenry is made up Muslims, Druze, Ba’hai, Bedouin, Christians, Arabs and Armenians among others. As such, Israel is one of the most diverse countries in the Middle East. As an aside, most Muslims countries have forced their minorities out- particularly Christians and are almost exclusively Arab Muslim. Law of Return: is a de-colonial project to re-populate the area with the descendants of those brutally expelled from their ancestral homeland. Has any other de-colonial project ever been so successful or even attempted? I would submit that the “law of return” will be modeled in other parts of the world where descendants of those expelled from ancestral lands will be encouraged to return especially in light of demographic shortages as a result of low birth rates. Settlements are located on disputed territory acquired after the 6 day war. You or I may not like it but technically laws of war are not being broken. My suggestion is if Palestinians want a state renounce Terrorism, fight anti-Semitic propaganda in their schools, and become total pacifists. Israel would be hard pressed not to evacuate settlements in such a scenario. But that will never happen unfortunately.

@@joe18750I can't take anyone seriously who thinks America is as democratic as they want us to believe it is and this is why Russia and others have a problem with us...they don't like our freedoms. It's the same "our sacred democracy is at sake" mumbo-jumbo. Democracy is an illusion where we are given the candidates they want us to chose from who are already in line with acceptable ideas and we vote one in and it really makes no difference who we vote in because the real power is happening behind the scenes by unelected powers no one can touch. The Liberal mind has an arrogance that thinks it's superior to other forms of government and feels the need to impose it's will onto every country it can in the name of "human rights". There is something really fishy going on with America and Israel. The rest of the world sees it and many Americans do as well. I think people have plenty of reasons to be mad at America and Israel and its not because they are jealous of the precious democracy and human rights.
