How about this? My mother was born and raised in Ireland. I was born in Ireland, attended two years of school there, and carry the passport, though my father is a U 1:48 S citizen. So I'm Irish. "Oh no you're not," say my Irish friends and relations. Seems some Irish won't admit you to their ranks unless you've never been abroad and are inbred to a fare-thee-well. I wouldn't be so proud of that myself, but I would say that, wouldn't I, being a damn foreigner (and having actually set foot outside the country.)

In relatively modern times, we have the United States, the British Empire, and the Soviet Union all failing miserably in those deserts and mountains. And if you go back to antiquity, you find failed attempts at conquest (or very temporary wins) by Persians, Arabs, Greeks, Mongols, etc. It's a shame that American military leaders are so stubborn, and members of Congress so permissive in allocating funding across 20 years, but this was always going to be the end result. Nobody wins in Afghanistan.

I grew up in a deaf school which is a public school, that allowed me freely accessed any information where my history class hadn't taught the dark truth in the books. It’s not completely accurate. I had to learn countries by continent in Elementary and high school. I paid attention and learned. Maybe what is embarrassing is that they didn’t pay much attention because it didn’t interest them while in school. Not so much to blame the entire system. There are different curriculums in different states also and that could also be a reason. 🤔
