Brooks was sent to Shawshank in 1905. He was released in 1955. Just imagine what happened in those years. When Brooks went away, there were still honest-to-God old-timey wild west outlaws operating out of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid's old hideout at Hole-In-The-Wall canyon, commercial radio broadcasts weren't a thing, cars were a novelty toy for the 1% and the Wright brothers had pretty recently flown the first aeroplane. Brooks missed both world wars, and the Korean war. When he got out, airliners with wingspans longer than the first flight were crossing the Atlantic daily, cars were everywhere, and radio was being slowly supplanted by television as the primary form of home entertainment. When Brooks came to Shawshank, he did so in a horse-drawn wagon. His first work details may have been spent splitting firewood, hauling buckets of water from the well, or refilling oil lamps. He'd seen the arrival of indoor plumbing, electric lights and central heating. And then they just kick him out. I don't think he would have been more lost if if they dumped him on the surface of Mars.

Fun fact. When Brooks was 'released' the camera view is towards him and the prison. So it was imagery that he was still stuck there. When Red was released, the camera view is looking out of the prison. So his story had more hope and he wasn't stuck at Shawshank.

My brother came and got out of the hospital, where I had been for five long and excruciating months. Those 5 months had been the hardest of my life. I had to learn how to walk again. He was helping me to the front seat of his car and, knowing me, he said "You're gonna have to take it slow". I smiled at him and said "Get busy living... or get busy dying". I may be handicapped, I may not walk for long periods of time, I may need a wheelchair, but it's not stopping me from getting busy living. In the last 9 years, I went from Montreal to France, I went to New York, Boston, Rimouski, Toronto, Canada's Wonderland, Chicago and more recently, Galaxy's Edge at Disney. I will never again get busy dying.

At 11 seconds into your reaction video you asked "Am I going to cry?" and I actually said out loud, "Yes, yes you are definitely going to cry." I knew that not because I know you, because I don't. I knew that because I know ME. I've seen this movie possibly 100 times or more, and knew that I had cried, and I knew I was getting ready to join you and cry once again. It's an amazing story of humans being human, and how their lives affect each other. I can't wait to see it again.

This is as close to a perfect film as I have ever seen. There's a reason this film is the #1 film on IMDb with a 9.3/10 rating with 2.7 million people rating it. That's amazing. It's even slightly ahead of The Godfather, which has a 9.2/10 rating at #2. This is also a perfect reaction. Your editing was awesome..you included all of the best and most important scenes, lines, all of the emotional scenes, etc...Shawshank is my favorite film of all time. In the book, it ends with Red getting ready to go to Mexico, but he hasn't left yet. And he gives that speech about "I hope I can make it across the border. I hope the Pacific is as blue as in my dreams. I hope." Originally, the movie ended with Red on the bus on the way to Texas and delivering the same speech. But it was felt that audiences needed to see Red and Andy reunited. It's my opinion that it undermines the point of hope to immediately see it fulfilled. At that point it's not hope anymore. Don't get me wrong, I love this movie. But there are a couple of things I would have done differently, and leaving the original ending would have been one of them. I think it would have been a more powerful ending to hear Red say "I hope" and then leave it at that. By the way, not that it matters, but you might be interested to know that in the book Red was a white guy with red hair. I believe the director was looking for someone that looked like that, but when Morgan Freeman auditioned, he was perfect for the role in other ways, so they changed his last name to Redding to explain why he was called Red. The crime that Red committed was to kill his wife for insurance money. He cut her brake lines, making her crash. But even worse, his wife gave a ride to a neighbour and her kid on that day, so Red was responsible for three deaths. It's hard to imagine the Red we meet doing something so evil, which shows that he actually was rehabilitated I guess.

He gave red a purpose to chase after him. A reason to keep on going or die the way brooks did. Scared and alone. That’s why he gave him directions to find him. Pretty crazy. It was like a foreshadow that’s Andy WILL escape and the path laid out before Red. Andy planned ahead for both himself and red. All those years book keeping for the prison and carefully crafting his disguise for the outside world.

I truly enjoyed this reaction. Just a very straight forward what-you-see-is-what-you-get kind of girl, watching a movie she was completely unprepared for. Like most people, you go into this movie not really knowing what to expect. We’re conditioned to receive a movie like this with a dark, hopeless feeling of dread and caution. But this one is special. Though you don’t know that at first. You’re just watching it causally, all the while entertained, immersed. Then, something happens and hits you like a truck. But you stuck with it and it was endearing to see the level of empathy you had for the characters. I never get tired of watching reactions to this movie. This was one of my favorites, and I owe that to you. Thank you Nia, for this heartfelt no nonsense, authentic introduction into your world.

Damn, you pretty. Two of the most interesting (to me) bits of trivia about this movie: 1) Kevin Costner turned down the role of Andy Duffresne to be in the flop movie "Waterworld." 2) when the police come to the prison and start making arrests, they arrest the big guard and the lead detective reads him his Miranda rights off of a piece of paper. The reason for this is that the year was 1966 -- the first year Miranda rights were required to be read at the time of arrest -- and no one had them memorized yet.

Red kept giving the parole board the same rehearsed response every time. It wasn’t until the end that he was truly honest and sincere. Then he got approved. Andy knew Red had no hope and wouldn’t do well on his own outside (like Brooks), so he made him promise to seek out that place to find what he burried there. He just didn’t mention that he put it there “after” he escaped, and not before. 😁

Here’s something to put the tragedy of Brooks in perspective . When he went into Shawshank in 1905, he was a kid, early 20s. Cars were a luxury item and airplanes were a recent invention. And for 50 years, he was told when to sleep , eat and slept in the same bed. All of a sudden, he was pushed back out into a world that he didn’t recognize at all. Almost everyone had a car and airplanes were constantly passing overhead. His country’s population had expanded dramatically and it had gone through two world wars and a great depression. Almost everyone he knew outside of Shawshank were dead , and it had been his home for a very long time . He grew to depend on it. By the way, I loved your reaction , Nia.

Today, this is an absolute classic. A well written, well produced movie. The music is what makes my heart soar...beautiful soundtrack, by my favorite score writer, musician and composer of music from many beautiful movies like this...Thomas Newman. I like to listen to music compilations of his, it makes me calm and happy. But Shawshank is a great story, and stellar acting. Very satisfying. Thank you for your reaction..💙🌺

Yes! Great story and it built up so much for such a great cathartic moment in the end! The music of course helped but unfortunately I didn’t notice the harmonica in the end to put that part together for Red, I’ll be on the look out the next time I watch this
