Recently, Michael Steranka gave a few remarks to DotEsports regarding the Remote Raid Pass nerf, and stated their goals for that nerf were achieved. I personally think that they still missed the whole point on why Pokémon GO players were so upset about the nerf. Let's talk about this.

Pokémon Go is a 2016 augmented reality (AR) mobile game developed and published by Niantic in collaboration with The Pokémon Company for iOS and Android devices. A part of the Pokémon franchise, the game is the result of a collaboration between Niantic, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. It uses the mobile device GPS to locate, capture, battle, and train virtual creatures, called Pokémon, which appear as if they are in the player's real-world location. The game is free to play; it uses a freemium business model and supports in-app purchases for additional in-game items. The game launched with around 150 species of Pokémon, which had increased to around 500 by 2019.
Pokémon Go was released to mixed reviews; critics praised the concept, but criticized technical problems. It was one of the most used and profitable mobile apps in 2016, having been downloaded more than 500 million times worldwide by the end of the year. It is credited with popularizing location-based and AR technology, promoting physical activity, and helping local businesses grow due to increased foot traffic. However, it attracted controversy for contributing to accidents and creating public nuisances. Various governments expressed concerns about security, and some countries regulate its use. By early 2019, the game had over a billion global downloads, grossing over $3 billion in revenue. The game also had over 147 million monthly active users as of May 2018.

It littearly about the money because if theyu were 100% on their vision on the game they wouldve took remote raiding out entirely.. They limited and raised the prices of it.. The remote raid nerf really killed my local community and it's very rare to have someone outside to raid with me. I only did raids because I had a second phone until the visual update made my second phone no longer work with Go. Now I don't go outside to raid at all because what's the point when very rarely my invites get accepted. Which is annoying since I really wanted to raid Mega Pidgeots and Mega Charizards recently.

I connected with a community in Mississippi and conneticutt that are connected through reddit. Because of the raid pass nerf, we really dont raid together all that much. If they did the rediscover pokemon go style of revamp along with the nerf would have been a balanced approach and blunted the fallout a tiny bit. The fact that it's taken them a year to start testing things like ex raids again is disappointing and compounded the bad feelings around nerfs in general. Outside go fest and tours there's zero reason to buy remote passes most of the year. I've done 2 remotes all year, one for t-tar and one for what turned out to be my 100% yvetal. I personally find it more problematic that testing these things are taking months to plan and just as long to put out to the player base. We should be on v2 of ex raids already. If the raid paradigm doesn't improve by the tour next year there's going to be a massive revenue problem going forward.

We have a couple other couples that have joined in to our group, but I think they would’ve joined either way. As far as remote rates, we used to sit down in the evening after dinner and do several remotes. now we sit down and watch a little bit of TV. We used to spend $150-$200 a month. Now it’s probably closer to $100-$150 a year. So at the end of the day, it has saved us money.

My local community collapsed after the remote raid nerf. It was so hard to get players to coordinate showing up to raids. However, my local community would happily assist remotely if a community member was willing to invite to a raid. There were still players who came in person to raid hours, but several community members just joined remotely. Since our local gyms are spread out, cars are required to reach them in any reasonable amount of time. As such, it is difficult coordinating a whole car procession to gyms for raid hours. It was much easier for players to just assist remotely. Anyway, the former local community that had been going since the start died after the remote raid nerf. All of the leaders stopped playing and the lack of leadership led to the dissolving of the whole community. I have been desperately trying to revitalize the community through campfire. While it has been growing slowly, it is a hollow shell of what it used to be. My community still only meets up for raid days or raid hours. There is no longer any coordination of just random raids that pop up throughout the week. My local community still has not recovered from the remote raid pass nerf. So many community veterans have completely quit in my local community

I hate the implication that people are too lazy to go out and walk around. People have jobs, school, and families to take care of, and there are so many people with disabilities who would need to remote raid. More accessible remote raids would mean more people have incentives to host raids in person too. I would argue it’s actually against the original mission to make the remote passes so expensive

@@Snow-WillowOh I completely agree! Me and my husband (33 and 34) have a 17 month old, and when we can’t go outside we ride around and play and he doesn’t do too well sitting in his car seat for too long with the stopping and going. Every time we stop he starts whining, so we have to constantly be moving in the car which isn’t the easier, not to mention traffic and other people trying to get to where they’re going. I’m gonna get a sticker that says “This vehicle stops frequently for Pokémon go” so people know to move the hell around and continue on with their business! Can’t stand it when everywhere we drive, even in a neighborhood we’re trying to drive slow and get spawns then BOOM a car comes out of nowhere on our ass so we pull over and let them go around! It’s so frustrating! You can cover more ground in the car when it comes to hatching eggs instead of walking. Playing in the car we get more shinies too because we cover a lot more ground.

False. They increase remote raids, the fan base will find anew complaint like pricing. Pricing is something that should remain the same considering it is a convenience to the user experience. @@hawkeye3938 Of course the community will nitpick but it's because Niantic continues to screw up pretty much everything they try to do with the game. If Niantic actually stopped and listened to the player base (for once) they might realize they actually had something pretty good going for them in regards to remote raids. Sure, it only happened because of the pandemic, but so what? They did something right with remote raids and it was very successful, and especially for those in rural areas that previously had difficulty in doing raids. But instead of leaving a good thing alone, they decided to change it and annoy everyone instead. Niantic seems determined to recreate what they had prior to the pandemic as far as the local communities went, but it was NEVER going to happen. My local community hasn't come back. I never did many remote raids anyways but I depended on sending out invites to be able to do legendary raids. Now, I rarely bother doing any raids and never legendaries anymore. I don't play nearly as much as I used to and wouldn't be surprised if I just stop playing entirely at some point in the near future. I actually enjoyed it so much, joined many in person events, met so many Japanese people and made some friends. Recently I came back to my small city in my country and I knew that the situation would have been different but, oh my god, the game is unplayable. In some areas there’s a huge lack of poke stops, making it literally impossible to get the basic resources and of course, no one ever raids, it’s always me and my 2 other devices beating 5* raids, never seen anyone else doing any kind of raids in 3 weeks I spent here. Remote raiding did make it easier to participate. For instance, everyone has different schedules, so, I could be at work and get an invite while on break and participate, then, in the evening provide the same opportunity to friends working second shift. Friends who r more casual players that don't participate enough to get involved or look for community, easier to send invites especially during raid hour and they live in another time zone, not to mention rural and disabled players. Some of us still actively GO, daily all the time. All niantic did by nerfing it was upsetting the more hardcore players and losing the more casual players. I think raid power needs a huge overhaul, such as scaling the boss down to match the amount of players. Maybe instead of 50k cp for a legendary, it's only 20k if there's only one player. When it's beaten, it becomes a lower level too to make sure it's not a strategy to just cheese a raid boss. So maybe if there's one player instead of level 20 or 25, the boss goes down to level 5 or 10.. As long as a new player (under level 30-32) can't solo the boss I don't see much of an issue. Legendaries are already dirt common and not anything special anymore in all honesty, getting more people just allows you to save candies and stardust from powering it up.

You've missed Niantic's entire reason for doing what they did. Niantic doesn't care about Pokémon, they don't necessarily even care about Pokémon Go's profits. Niantic is a location data gathering company. Pokémon Go was made to gather location data from it's users from playing and scanning and submitting points of interests. Niantic created a workforce of unpaid cartographers all over the planet literally mapping out the world for them. What actually decreased when remote raid passes were introduced is their amount of location data coming in and that’s why it had to be stopped. their statement saying that their change to remote raid passes have given the intended resolution has to be in relation to that location data starting to come back in strong. Freaking shame.

There are players like me who never had the opportunity to have remote raid passes before the nerf and I find them quite useful to keep an interest in the game. I can only imagine how great it was before. Without raid passes, I wouldn't be playing the game at all. I have no community and spend most of my time playing when I travel from a point to another (alone) so how would I encounter other players ? If they want us to create communities, they should create things that would encourage us to go to a certain spot like the elite raid but much more frequent and at random gyms/pokestop or something like that so at least we could meet other pogo players IRL but I don't even know where to go to meet others. I play in a rural area and in my friends list, the closest friend I have is my brother living 1 hour of drive from me. They should simplify the way you can enter in contact with people having a pokemon defending the same gym (at least it means you passed both at the same spot sometime). The only campfire group close to me has 180 members and I think 2 or 3 messages have been posted the last 6 months without a lot of answer if any. What a community !

I haven’t seen an increase in players for local raids (making some shadow raids absolutely pointless in my area). The greatest thing with the remote raids was being able to raid with people on my friends list from other countries, where they could be hosting raids for Pokemon that are region locked. Rural areas simply won’t be able to compete in elite raids and will miss out on the upcoming mega Rayquaza raids. But I still play because I made a second account a couple of years ago on a spare phone so I’m able to do most raids by myself, but that isn’t the case for a lot of Pokemon go players.

These executives are so out of touch. They think life is like a Friends style sitcom where nobody has to work more than 4 hours a week or have any other obligations. The simplest solution was to give more incentive to raid locally (more candy, stardust, rewards, etc than remote raids) and I think a huge boost to player friendships if you raid together would have encouraged in person raiding a lot more than remote pass nerfs. What we have now is just pay to win and encourages players to spoof instead of going through the trouble

Community leader here in Northern Ireland and the nerf ruined our community. Experienced players don’t come out, new players just spend extra money on remotes even when it’s trash raids, and frankly I only play the game out of habit now. I feel if Niantic had implemented one of the nerfs alongside a buff (like the guaranteed XL candy) at the same time that a larger number of community members would have taken the nerf more gracefully. Instead, our community collapsed (cause we can’t play with people in the rest of the UK, let alone world wide) and the whales keep playing as they spend regardless.

So they actually WANT fewer players? I don't think they realize what a barrier to entry the raid system is for many people. If I can't remote raid, I simply can't raid. That's the end of it. Which means I can't collect some of the better PM for either raid attacking OR PvP. It simply means I'm gonna get smushed no matter what I do. So thanks for letting me know Niantic. I guess I'll stop playing your game now.

I don't think you're going after the real issue here. Why does raiding feel so tedious? Because...it is. Instead of giving us a way to pay our way to win from home (which does take away from the spirit of the game imo), let us have some agency over the power of our pokemon instead of just rolling the die. Bring in some way to boost pokemon IVs, I don't care how hard it is to earn it, it would be better than playing the roulette wheel.

I can tell you for sure that my Pokémon community Is not happy. We all have more complaints than anything. So yeah I’m taking a break after New York. I don’t think I will even play the global event. I mean, With remote raids I could raid at home and have fun, with a nerf yes I have to go out, But I live in the south, Most days are 95°F with 80% humidity to start, and if it does cool down, it’s because of thunderstorms… I almost NEVER play outside my car. Niantic is just failing their own players. And as for community, On a good raid hour we can get 5-6 people. On a meh one maybe 3. But when remote raids weren’t nerfed we have MORE overall players cause more people actually enjoyed the game. I still have fun personally just hunting mons and powering up what I have, But it can be hard to have fun or be hopeful for the game when EVERY update niantic just takes from its players. The anger in me wants to watch them fail due to their actions, but I’d also hate to lose Pogo. I really wish companies weren’t beyond out of touch with their playerbases.

I don't believe them; Ninatic will never admit they are wrong, therefore "We're right" was always going to be their only comment. It would take a lot to convince me they didn't give up over a $100 million dollars in annual revenue and nuke ever non-downtown raid scene because they couldn't think of how to incentivize players to play the way Niantic envisions (pooling local lobbies, making *5 adjust for player count/level, etc) And if you look at the Pokémon they are putting in E-Raids its pretty clear they are being force to put the super chase stuff in the local-only raids to make them "work"

Was enjoying it a good bit, so decided to invitest into my avatar a bit. 2 weeks later avatar update in which broke more than half what i bought. Fun fact belts dont work on ANYTHING right now xD xD so this led me to start spoofing and ive been spoofing ever since. Hearing more about the negative sportsman ship Niantic gives it's playerbase I dont even feel bad or have any remorse for doing so, feels about the only way to enjoy the game now. My main reason of play was to have something fun to get out with play with friends and possibly meet and make new ones. Which i still intend to do Rn Rn ive been enjoying being a spoofer. Showing up to campfire flares inwhich people are typically using hoping other campfire app users will see their call outs. Sadly where i am locally it seems only like 25% of the pogo commute even realizes how to use the campfire app or even knows about it. So I know more often then not when I do this I can typically be called out xD

Because of what they did with the raids I'm now down to one person who I have actual contact with who plays regularly, and even then we play sporadically at best. Do they actually think 1-2 people are going to win a single 5-star raids walking aimlessly around town? We almost beat Registeel once, but either way it relies on using a vehicle; no exercise. I won't even get into rural areas. The exercise excuse is going nowhere with anyone, so don't give us that BS Niantic. Walking is already very important to hatch eggs and get XL candy, and whaddya know, they knock steps off during paid events. Also, the incubators are their most expensive product. It's a price gouge and no amount of gaslighting will make us forget that's exactly why they did this.

News flash Niantic- A decent number of players no longer bother going out to play nearly as often as we did before your rrp nerf. Why... Because we can't solo t5 & most t4 raids & far too few people now want to join raids remotely so there is no point in us leaving the house to go find raids to do anymore. I play for 60-90mins during my daily walk & that is it outside of raid hour once a week, which I only bother with if the raid boss is super popular & hasn't been out for 1 to 2 weeks already. I now have almost 200 green passes in my bag because I can't use them like I used too. So yeah, your nerf has worked amazingly well for a bunch of us by dissuading us from bothering to leave the house to play. Your nerf has worked so well that my spending on PoGo has greatly reduced- I used to purchase all the tickets & a 14500 bundle once or twice a month, but since your price increases & the nerf, I've only bothered buying com day tickets, the fest or tour tickets & needed dex entry research, as no point me spending money on raid passes I'm not going to use or can't use, so my bank account is looking super happy thanks to the nerf.

“Seen more in-person communities coming back together… since pre-pandemic”. No sheep Sherlock. Stands to reason that in-person activity would pick up post-pandemic. This is such a selective way to interpret the data and completely disregards context. I feel like in-person activity is actually lower, especially raiding, because you can’t guarantee that other people will be out and raiding too. I was at my parents, who don’t live in the city, and finding enough people to raid was impossible.

Yes, I stopped playing PoGo for awhile after they nerfed the remote raids (for idr how long) but I think they eventually ended up getting an event that got me back to playing again. Only difference is I don't buy remote passes w/ Google Play cards anymore, I have a Gym next to my house that I can put a mon into for coins. If I have $ leftover from something else, maybe I'll put it into PoGo for passes, incubators(another price hike, as well as incense and everything else in the store) I just buy one item at a time instead of bulk. Remote passes work for me b/c i can't get alot of ppl to raid with and i can't walk to other raids. Also there's the weather (summer and winter) I could raid from home if it's hot or cold out and w/ other friends online.

This is such a lame attempt at gaslighting players who have been playing the game the entire time, and know exactly what is happening. He is such an awful individual. He's had an absolute nightmare with statements this past week. Almost every word out of his mouth is either empty or toxic. You are dead right when you say they don't understand what people are complaining about. Steranka is great at responding to straw men and avoidign the real issues. It is just rude and offensive, and also just plain weird. Why they wanted to get rid of all the thriving communities that supported each other, and just minimsie access of the raiding part of the game (and spawns, and research tasks) to rich city people again. Quite why they could not leave the thriving momentum of the game alone, and also add GOOD versions of Routes and Party Play beggars belief. Give people more incentives to go out - which is fine, people were doing that anyway (as they themselves already said). It's very frustrating, and sadly too may people are still giving this guy far too much money to be insulted by him like this.

Thank God I never played when remote raids were a thing. So I'm not spoiled like the people here complaining. They have a point where now there are lots of people raiding in person. It takes from the game when things are too easy. Rural players will always be complaining about pokemon go so I don't see their point anymore since they're still playing. People are threatening that there will be more flyers now, and that's ok for me as long as those hardcore players still come in person and I'm not just playing with 3 people who are just inviting others. It truly scared me when I came back and saw remote raids which I could do from pokegenie, I was happy to know that the remote passes were expensive as heck and only a set number can be done per day. I thought that Pokemon go would just be me joining raids in my bed which was not what this game should be about. Good Job Niantic!
