I think its about an attitude to driving as if there is a heirarchy, the cyclists arent proper road users, like cars. It works the other way with cyclists advocating not to use many cycle lanes because they have a right to the road, or pulling in to let faster vehicles pass occasionally, there needs to be more of a sense of us all being in this together, on the same time of trying to get somewhere safely.

Impatience and entitlement are the two worst and most common bad traits amongst drivers, and Jon shows neither. He is humble, patient and massively considerate to everyone around him, even when they make mistakes. We should all drive like Jon.

I totally agree, and impatience often obscures ability. Having had some advanced driver training, I recognise most of Jon's traits, especially anticipation of actions of others, but in my 40k miles a year I do get occasionally impatient and all of the good habits are destroyed. Patience and mental attitude are possibly two of the most important elements of truly "advanced driving" which is not really about making good progress at all, more safe progress.

You never want to stop just after a bend or crest if you can at all avoid doing so, if you cant be seen from a distance the chance another driver will crash into you goes up greatly, even though we should all be going slow enough in these situations that we can stop, few do drive slow enough and many seem to try to go round the corners as fast as they can. Jon was driving at a proper speed and could stop on the bend easily when the lorry in the road became visible.

Jon is probably being a little harsh on himself for the 'plonker' incident, but I think I see what he's thinking. Perhaps he should have held back passing the first truck until the car in front had well cleared the gap between the trucks, which would have allowed an earlier merge for him into that gap, or allowed the first truck to merge. Still, if that's his worst mistake...

F1 drivers aren't really all that; you know they get into more trouble on the roads than most proper road drivers right? It's easy when you know the other guys and you're all going in the same direction; but real drivers have to deal with people we don't know and hazards F1 drivers don't have to contend with. So many people praise them but frankly Rally drivers are miles and away better and there are drivers out there on the road that in any real life scenario would beat F1 drivers hands down.

@@johnbower7452 They're massively different skill sets. F1 drivers are physically extremely fit, and have an amazing ability to get into practically any car and know where the physical limitations of it are immediately. Rally drivers have an unbelievable level of situational awareness, but in a totally different sense to professional drivers on the road. The reason lots of professional racing drivers get speeding tickets and so on is because they feel confident enough to drive at those speeds, and are skilled enough to do so. Of course, the law is the law, and driving dangerously is wrong whether you're an F1 driver or not. An F1 or rally driver may well not be as good a driver as Jon in the situations Jon faces, but by the same token, Jon would probably be useless in an F1 car. Whilst I'm sure Lewis Hamilton could find the limit of what a rally car is theoretically capable of on a track, he'd be uncompetitive if actually entered into a rally.

Superb driving all round there Jon. One issue I find when having good anticipation is that other "not so switched on" drivers (particularly those behind) don't understand why I'm doing what I'm doing. As a result they either get impatient or even try to overtake without fully appreciating the full picture. But it's quite satisfying when moments later it all becomes apparent to them. I also recall Ashley saying recently that he likes to play a little game and see how much earlier he can spot a particular situation arrising before other drivers do. I tend to play the same game.

Yep. The one that seems to confuse others that I practise is pulling over one lane for a stopped vehicle/police car by the side of a dual-carriageway/motorway or else (and this really does seem confuse) doing the same for deer grazing at the roadside. The stopping on the corner rather than round it is a good one from Jon. To be fair, I do see quite a few drivers do that on one particular sharp bend with a T-junction about 100 yards after with a perpetual queue. It's self preservation as much as anything but it's still good to see.
@ibs5080
@ibs5080 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the stopping within the sightline of a bend due to some obstruction rather than around the bend is something I also practice. A common occurance for this is on an A or B road that has roadworks and temporary traffic lights some way past the bend. Particularly if a queue of traffic has already built up from the temporary lights but not yet around the bend. I also watch my mirrors very carefully in such a situation and when I see another vehicle approaching from behind, either flash my brake lights (handbrake already applied) or my four way flashers briefly.

4:53 Not a plonker at all, it was a messy situation involving a lot of moving parts but you did what you could to accomodate the HGV in front of you. The driver next to you did seem to have to do some fairly harsh braking but he sorted his own situation out. Also, i do really appreciate his timing when letting trucks out on the motorway because most of the time I do it, people will undertake me and render the whole event useless.
@aveekbh
@aveekbh 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe he's being hard on himself because he is familiar with the road and knows there is a lay-by there. However, he handled the situation very well - even as best as anyone could. He even made sure not to be in the blind spot of the white lorry at 04:35. Yes, that means he got close to the blue lorry that came into lane 2, but that's definitely preferable than being in the blind spot of a lorry that needs to change into your lane. Well done there, Jon, and thanks for showing that good drivers are always asking themselves what they could have done better.
@PedroConejo1939
@PedroConejo1939 3 жыл бұрын
I thought he handled that well too. Lay-bys on busy dual-carriageways, especially those on or just after bends are a bloody menace but their effect is reduced if everyone acts sensibly.

Very commendable and superb all round from Jon but unfortunately, he's in a very very small group of drivers, who actually have a brain and observes & anticipates well ahead. Not sure how differently he could have handled the situation at 4:06 though, although i would say that most artic drivers don't do themselves any favours by sitting too close to the lorry in front, hence the harsh braking the tipper driver. That situaton could have ended very badly indeed.

Great set of video clips and well done to Jon, a fine example of good driving. I wonder if the viewers giving the video a thumbs down are the very petulant, self-entitled head cases who create drama on the roads and don't drive strategically? For example, I do many of the things Jon does in his video's, such as holding back at lights or junctions if I think I won't clear them in time, however I feel many drivers don't do this due to peer pressure as if you're seen to be not moving on a green light the queue of traffic behind start kicking off and acting out as they can't actually see the situation ahead so wrongly assume that it simply somebody deliberately holding up the traffic and being unreasonable or just slow. Another example which backs up my theory on congestion is the joining traffic on carriageways, up here in the North East there is a major problem on the A1 between Gateshead and Gosforth, we have three lanes narrowing down to two lanes and lots of slip roads, however the issue isn't the road system as such but more the drivers using it as the mob of self-entitlement and poor quality driving rules. Yesterday I was stuck in traffic on the A1 northbound near the Metro Centre, a large shopping mall up this neck of the woods and I am approaching a joining section of road, so I slow every so slightly and create a gap however the car in front closes their gap as does the car behind to prevent vehicles from the slip road joining as why should they get in front? So I let two cars in the gap, the buffoon behind is kicking off with the arm waving and tailgating aggressive disapproval of my act of common courtesy and tact. Now I am willing to bet that said driver would have adopted that raged mentality for the rest of their journey and made damn sure nobody got in front of them - What did this achieve? Nothing positive that's for sure and I am confident it is the single most cause of traffic congestion.

It is something that is being tried here in India to (hopefully) address the appallingly poor standard of driving here. That said, simulator training is only as good as the simulator and the scenarios. However, it is much easier to expose learners (or inexperienced drivers) to complex scenarios that would be difficult (if not dangerous) in real life. But it requires more up-front cost for the transport authorities.

Thanks for the great content and insight Ashley. I’ve been driving for about 10 years now and by no means I would consider myself an impatient driver as I always give people time and space (especially newly passed and learner drivers. But your videos were definitely the quick refresher I needed to reevaluate and take a step back and analyse my own driving. Especially now that the roads have become much busier again as restrictions have been slowly lifted. Last year was the biggest breath of fresh air as most of the roads around here were completely dead with people being constantly at home and it was easy to become a bit too comfortable to those conditions. Now more than ever with heavier traffic is the best time to resharpen those driving skills. 👍

Nice one Jon! These videos make me a better and safer driver. Actually avoided an accident today as I slowed down on a unfamiliar road as I couldn't see far enough ahead and there was a van in the middle of the road which I'm sure I would have hit at 60mph if I didn't want these video

Jon C setting exemplary standards👏👏 Don't beat yourself up over lay-by scenario, with your vision obscured by artics in vast flow of traffic. Its as safe as anything for lay-by driver(s) to await in accordance thus selecting a gap in traffic flow to emerge safely. Sometimes, just sometimes we can't all be too considerate but your thought for other road users can't be praised highly enough. Top man 😁😁

#9 I dont know what Jon expected to do better there, I would've done exactly the same, leaving space for the HGV to change lane because its not entirely clear why traffic is slowing is just smart.

Love these - I see a lot in the biker community about "blaming cars". And, to a degree they're right - a lot of drivers absolutely suck, but that doesn't mean you're powerless - don't leave your own safety up to other people. I'm a private pilot and as most know, we do a full check of the aircraft before each flight. It's always drilled into us to NEVER rely on somebody else doing it

6:57 this road is about a 10 minute drive from my house, and people drive TOO FAST down this road, especially when there is a school 2 minutes away & lots of kids use this road to get to and from school. But all people care about no a days is themselves, I must get there now, got to save that extra 10 seconds, its stupid

Stop the clip at 4:59 and look at the road sign. This is a road I know well. It is the A40 coming out of a village called Stokenchurch north west of High Wycombe. Note what the road sign tells us: The A40 does a TOTSO to the right. If you go straight on, then you reach the M40. Most vehicles are likely to join the motorway but Jon is following a vehicle which cannot legally use it. So if the vehicle is going toward the same destination as those joining the motorway, it will have to continue to follow the A road. The same thing would happen if you were following a learner.

The road at 3:00 is between two woodland trails in Sheffield. Always full of walkers (often with dogs and young children), cyclists etc. crossing the road coupled with poor visibility when you are crossing. I couldn't think of many worse places to speed round a blind corner. So excellent work from your cammer and a textbook example of why you always need to give yourself adequate stopping distance when going round corners like that.

Used to be an absolute knob on the roads (especially before moving to the UK). Over time I've been learning to do the same things as Jon and my passengers have often asked me to explain who I anticipated/predicted/guessed something was going to happen. It's a severely underestimated skill on the roads and I believe it should be mandatory driver training (while we're at it, everybody should be required to learn from a qualified instructor). Biggest thing is: our monkey brains require training to drop our egos and think about safety.

At 7:50 that is the first gantry of the M40. Before then it’s just a couple of advisories in the middle of the road capable of not much other than lane closures and speed restrictions. It is a problem with the M40. Lack of many good dot matrixs.

At clip#9 don't call yourself a plonker. You handled the situation perfect and the lorry driver is even thanking you for it by flashing it's direction-lights.

Even at 4:47 the guy's a hallmark for what *to* do as a professional driver when the situation you're in is sub-optimal or gets a little dicey. If I opt to go into fieldwork at my current job after passing my test and getting my license, his manner of driving is something I'll be constantly aiming to match. It makes basically no sense whatsoever to be a massive jerk and endanger other road users if you have the constant option to observe, be patient and make progress. nine times out of ten you're gonna get from A to B just as fast anyway. It's just one method is totally safe, the other is reckless and endangers you and other road users.

Jon.. With the video at the 4.52 mark don't be hard on yourself. Unless you have drove on this road before you weren't to know there was a slip road. You maybe a great driver, but you don't have x ray vision and the ability to see through lorries and other cars. 😉 You slowed down to let the lorry across and you helped to make thst situation safer.

Good driving and good examples there. What is the point of making a very likely incident out of a situation. 4:06 could of been a right mess but Jon managed to give everyone a bit of space even thou could not really see much. A lot of people can be appreciative when you make moves that help them out prob they are a like minded road user them selves as they would of realised what you have done as they would of prob have done it them selves if they could :-)

I do think i am a good safe driver. The clip where you said "would you have held back" i would have. But there was a couple where i see how Jon is safer for example when the guy went into the bike lane to go around someone turning right. If the bike lane was clear i would have done the same.

Finally early to a video of yours, Ash! As somebody who has a commercial-rated license here in Malaysia, I hope that I can follow Jon's examples here despite our driving here is something to be desired. I strive to be the best driver I can be, so I had learned much from the performance side of things and also from your type of videos. Cheers, and don't stop teaching!

On that lay-by clip he may have been late on anticipation by the impeccable standard he sets himself; but as far as I can see he caught onto the danger immediately that it became apparent, took decisive and controlled action to get himself slowed well in advance of the path of the vehicles changing lanes and with more than enough space had there been any more wanting to do this. A lesser driver would have slammed on the brakes, blasted horns, flashed lights and so forth, but at no point (not even for a second) did Jon appear to be out of control either of his van or his temper.
