Riding shotgun was originally from the days of the overland stage when some of the cargo was considered valuable. Some lines, and also private carriers, would put armed guards next to the driver. The guards usually carried double barreled 12 gauge shot guns. The gun barrels were shortened so the gun could be covered by the shooters slicker against dust and rain. They were called coach guns.

It is a spectacular roadway building achievement with much of it a bridge. It is a feast for my eyes to see that spectacular interstate 70.

11:50 "...has nothing to do with guns." Riding shotgun was all about guns actually. Back in the day, the guard for the stage coach was armed with a shotgun in case of a hold-up. This was also the reason why we drive on the right hand side of the road. With 90% of us being right handed, we sat on the left side of the vehicle so that we could use a whip on any of the horses as well as watch our wheel hubs when we passed another wagon.

I had to drive from Denver to home to Grand Junction with my friend's 120# dog who I had taken to Denver for surgery in DEC 2010, and they closed the pass behind us. Luckily I was in a 4WD Tacoma, but it was a five hour white knuckle drive at 30 MPH in almost no visibility with the roads completely buried all the way to Glenwood Springs where it finally started thinning out. The dog would periodically wake up and just howl, because he was still doped up from the surgery and a little confused and sore. Startle the crap out of me. I'll never forget that drive...

I don't know, for some reason KZbin recommended this clip to me. Never caught such a shotgun view of the Rockies. Never been there, so this is a real education. I've never ridden in what we (at least used to) call a tractor-trailer where I come from, but have driven cars in all kinds of snow, since I live in Pennsylvania. I'm only into the first ten minutes and those tunnels out there are funny to me, bored through the edge of mountains and not through near the middle like the ones here. I recall as a kid my family took this "big trip" from the Philadelphia area to State College (home of Penn State) one Saturday morning in 1974, my first time up the Northeast Extension (of the PA Turnpike) to Route 80 (I-80). We enter the tunnel on the Extension having ridden like 40 miles in dreary rain and we exit the north end of the tunnel in what seemed a blizzard. It was the end of March when we weren't expecting snow. It seemed like the longest drive ever to reach the center of the state. Of course we had a rear-wheel-drive car ('71 Buick Skylark), and stopping for gas along 80 almost got us stuck somewhere in the mountains, cars and trucks off the side of the roads. My poor dad. But he was a patient, careful driver and that otherwise clumsy Buick made it.

Always someone out there wanting to make changes.I’m 80 yr old. Originally from Connecticut and New Jersey. Followed many a trucker who were life savers.. was going home from Indiana to Jersey where my father lived, he was in the hospital having emergency surgery. My son of 12 years old at the time was with me, when we hit Pennsylvania, on 80 -90, we ran into a snow storm . Usually I could make it back home in 9 hours but I had been on the road for 12 hours. In those days we could drive 80 mph. I finally stopped to call home, we didn’t have cell phones in those days, and when I called I found out my father had passed away. He didn’t survive the surgery. I was only about 80 miles away and the weather had gotten worse. Turned into an ice storm. I broke down crying so did my son. There were truck drivers there at the restaurant and they must have asked the waitress what was wrong. To make a long story short, God bless them, they came and offered to drive my son and I the rest of the way to my fathers house . I will never forget them and their compassion . You guys are fantastic in my book. You don’t have an easy job. Thank you . You all are truly appreciated.

So I haven't driven the stretch from Denver to Grand Junction in about 25 years or so. I always talked myself through in rough weather the same as you did in this video. No internet back then. One thing you said that I still say to this day....COME ON BETSY! Cracks anyone up that is with me. At times I miss being out there but when I see the snow coming down now I am content watching it from my recliner. Keep it safe.

The triggered libturds can go play in someone else's videos if they don't like this video. Maybe we should go to their videos and find things to gripe about and tell them to change their things, 'cause they offend us? They don't like their own lives, so they want to ruin everyone else's. They can kiss our butts if they don't like our stuff.

The lady school bus driver was prob equipped with hydraulic chains. They're mounted on the frame rails, left and right side, just ahead of the drive wheels. With the flip of a switch, she can engage the chains. Two hydraulic rams come dow, each with a 6 inch hard rubber and steel whell,. Each has 6 or 8 lengths of chain attached to the wheel. The wheel presses against the inside of the drive tire which causes it to spin. The spinning causes the chainsto go under the drive tires, giving her traction. She simply flips the switch back and the rams, wheel and chains retract up and out of the way.

I'm a coach driver, have been for more than 30yrs. Here in Victoria Australia, you cannot drive a heavy vehicle (coach) unless you are trained. When I did my Hazardous area training in 1989, it took 4 days. I learned how to chock the wheels, the correct way to fit then store the chains when the trip was finished I learned how to treat Hypothermia and sprains. It is a real challenge driving in the snow and I have enjoyed every bit of it. Please don't change the name of your channel it has a lot of your wild west history in it.

I am a 72 year old ex truckers wife living in Middle, TN now. 30 years and 2 days of marriage and trucking from New Mexico, I rode shotgun (passenger) for two and half years in beginning. And still know every mile, all weather conditions, your dispatches and drops, endless issues and problems, etc, etc that you are driving and probably a bit more. Your conversation is even the same and makes me smile. We were owner-ops for 8 years and that stress wore me out. He and I are best friends now. I moved here to be near my Veteran son and two grandkids and rest my brain. I had too many complaints about my life. My husband had warned me, "it is the same everywhere". He was right. But watching your videos makes me realize, life there was a lot more tolerable. Take care of your family, your health and drive careful as always. Your channel name is perfect.

Thank you for the videos, very nice to watch. Reminds me of my trip there in similar conditions, when I crossed the Rockies west to Grand Junction in a Challenger. Changed it to a Cherokee for the way back to Denver through a night. Glad I did as it was dumping, but I made it to the airport well in time and received a message that the I-70 was closed due to a 20-car pileup east of Frisco. I'm very used to driving in snow, but the wide all seasons the Challenger had were useless in snow, doubt it would've made it. The Cherokee had winter tires and was as surefooted like it was on asphalt, blasted through the storm by the speed limit. Good times. Greetings from Finland.

Don't think of changing the name. It's part of our history and culture; someone riding shotgun acted as a guardian of the stagecoach driver who could not free his hands, holding the reins controlling 4 to 6 horses at a dead gallop to escape thieves. Driving that rig took a team. Driving your rig is as complex and you do it alone. We love to ride along.
