Nicholas Angelich, probably best known as an interpreter of the German Romantics has recorded one of the landmarks of the Baroque keyboard repertoire, Bach's magnificent Goldberg Variations. In a complex and monumental work like the Goldberg Variations -- comprising an aria and 30 variations and lasting well over an hour -- a satisfactory balance between overall architecture and structural detail is a vital factor.

@@ladye3863 Very nice and helpful, already busy with career and concerts so unfortunately he had to be replaced quite often. After I got my final piano exam he told me he would be happy to continue to give courses to me, but I sadly and somehow stupidly missed this opportunity (My main activity is research and teaching in math so I was somehow taken by other things)... I met him I think 3 more times for a few minutes after his concerts I was very happy to talk but unfortunately at that time he was too busy to meet longer.

Well.... I wouldn't judge too hardly on this illustrous performer. Although I rank Hewitt's and Perahia's interpretation very high too, I think Angelich particularly strikes the mellow and introspective touch needed for this work... I recall that Bach was the first to use the equal temperament for the clavichord. Since the Goldberg variations were published at least after the first cycle of the Well-tempered Clavier....???

Not what I want to hear in Bach's keyboard music. Too syrupy, and the ornaments break the rhythmic frame. Of course, there's also the insurmountable problem of "temperament". Bach composed very explicitly for an instrument tuned to an extended, irregular meantone temperament. This piano is in "equal temperament", which means that all the thirds are high and the most exposed triadic chords are direly out of tune.
