It’s really weird when you realize Gene’s vision wasn’t what sold, or what was successful. Meyers, imo, is what made Star Trek successful. If you think about it Gene was E.P. In name only. JJ had no clue what he was doing in Star Trek or Star Wars. JJ sets things up, and on a surface level it kinda works unless you dig in a bit then it makes no sense.

+Crowne Productions - JJ for star wars was fine. Star Wars is more space fantasy. Star Trek is more science fiction, that last is where Nicholas Meyer is better suited and JJ's sensibilities less so. I still enjoyed the reboot btw, but real world themes being explored through science fiction it was not.

TMP was my first uninterrupted Star Trek story to watch (we were always in church when TOS was in re-runs on WAVE-3 Louisville), and unforgettable. By this time I was 10 and had seen and read 2001: a Space Odyssey, and was a huge Arthur C. Clarke fan, so I was as prepared as a kid could be for a slow-burn, cerebral exploration story. I understand the criticism of TMP as "not Star Trek", but it holds an honored place for me as my intro to the Star Trek Universe. I'd venture to guess that even some of its detractors might say it's not exactly the worst told Star Trek story ever committed to film, either.

Meyer is a bright star in the Star Trek world. I really enjoyed his gentle sense of humor. Lots of good bits in this intrview and it's well worth watching the entire 30 minutes.

My favorite quote from Mr. Meyer on Star Trek II was after his wife had read the screenplay and he asked her what she thought about it. Her reply was, "it's nautical, but nice." rofl He laughs as he recounts this with a glint in his eye. Good stuff : )

I think we all can agree that Wrath of Khan was a kick ass Star Trek film capturing the true essence and the embodiment of Trek stories & characterizations as the TV show proved & Nicholas Meyer definitely kicked it up a notch theatrically. I've been following Nicholas Meyer since one of my favorite time travel movies Time After Time with Malcolm McDowell & David Warner which is kind of an ironic precursor to the Voyage Home.

Meyer added to startrek, he didn't save it, the public did. And the guy on stage is a little clueless, the motion picture is basically unedited. They ran out of time so you get everything pretty much. This is why the enterprise reveal and so many other shots go on for an eternity, it wasn't edited. Its a perfectly fine concept for a startrek movie.

True, liked the 2001 director's edition but i've always felt Robert Wise sadly didn't tighten his own movie up in places yet still when it still could've benefited from some heavy edits regardless. In point of fact, Jerry Goldsmith himself said he composed the score in such a way that you could snip the film late in the game and not damage his compositions too badly. They just ran out of time. An anecdote I heard from the time was that the film cans were still wet when they were delivered to theaters, it was so late out the door. And the idea that TMP "nearly killed" Trek is such an exageration. TMP did pretty good at the theater, and although it wasn't a critical success, it still made money. They were pretty much immedlately looking into a sequel. What the higher ups told Gene, and then eventually Harve Bennett, was that they had to bring the budget down and tighten things up. The Motion Picture cost a LOT of money, and frankly we have never gotten a completely accurate number, because we have no idea how much was spent in preproduction for "Phase II" Before the TV series was transformed into a film series. What Nick Meyer did was give Star Trek a fresh outsiders perspective on Star Trek which allowed him to be unbiased in his story telling.

Highly recommended are Meyer's first and third films, "Time After Time" (1979) and "The Day After" (1983). I think Meyer sells Star Trek VI short because, in that movie, as soon as the wall comes down in space, both sides have to deal with insurgent terrorist plots to destabilize the political situation for ideological reasons, which is essentially what happened in real life after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Of course, it's Meyer's movie, so he can say what he likes about it. The mundane in-Universe explanation, of course, is that VI sets up the backstory for the alliance between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, which audiences already knew to be in place by the time of VI's release (since TNG was in first run).

JJ Abrams didn’t so much build on the foundation of Star Trek as he pulled up bricks from it and threw them at us. Oh, you like Spock‘s mother? Well, I’ll kill her! How’s that for emotional impact! So you like the planet Vulcan? OK, I’ll destroy it! There’s emotional impact for you! Kirk screaming “Khan!!!” and Spock dying are earned emotional moments. JJ having Spock scream “Khan!!!” and Kirk dying are not earned emotional moments, just bullet points on a list. Nicholas Meyers earned a respect for the story he made, JJ simply provided entertainment for 127 minutes.

Fully agree with him over J J's version of Spock, Totally out of character, His life wasn't really effected by the change caused by Nero, It only really affected Kirk.. So for Spock to be totality out character was wrong in my opinion

They also established that as a child he had difficulty controlling his emotions, which is something all vulcan children deal with. Vulcans are not inherently in control of their emotions. They are trained to be in control. Since we've never seen Spock as a child before this movie, it makes sense.

@105104339029240280724 I watched the show, He wasn't that overall emotional as he was presented in star trek 2009, In the TOS he showed little or none at all, usually in the extreme or when something allowed him to be emotional. He was overcome with joy when found out Kirk was alive in one episode but quickly regained control. Or in one episode called "This Side of Paradise," he was completely emotional due to being exposed to the spores.. But he was presented as an emotional wreck in JJ version whenever he felt he was being mocked for his human side and a relationship with Uhura didn't make sense

A non Star Trek fan makes the best Star Trek movie. Fanboy young directors shouldn't get anywhere near these big projects. Empire Strikes back another example of a director having no clue about the source material, just focusing on the story and characters, which in essence is what makes a successful motion picture.

I sympathize with him when hearing these questions. I love Star Trek but the fans have this anal retentive approach to disseminating the smaller parts of the film. It’s no secret that his involvement with Star Trek 2 and 6 were done with lower budgets and was always handled as the LAST Star Trek movie. His movies are the better ones because it is not smart by design, but it’s great because it was done with no expectations. Trekkies, despite having male pattern baldness can come off as little, bratty 5th graders. Just appreciate it.

The guy at the beginning is woefully clueless. Clearly didn't bother to do any research. In 1982, TWOK was an A (adults only) certificate in the UK for cinema release. When it was released on VHS, it was given a 15 cert which remained up until around 2002 when TWOK was released on DVD in the UK and reclassified by the BBFC as a 12 cert.

No I wasn't clueless, i was just on the spot trying to remember which it was. I was only six when it came out and would've only been able to watch a 15 cert in 1991. I have in my collection a 12 cert bluray so that's all I could remember.

Its always been more or less an adult movie. Unlike the first film kids didn't go to see Wrath of Khan (it also had no toys/figures based on the movie unlike TMP did?) Its always had a strong rating and the film's contents are justified in its heavy ratings over the years given the scenes of action and violence in'em!

@Jive Bunny - According to the BBFC site ( www.bbfc.co.uk/case-studies/star-trek-ii-wrath-khan ), in 1982, "A" was "Advisory" (in other words, the equivalent of PG), but in order to obtain that certificate, a couple of cuts were required. @neil green - I think I'm a couple of years younger than you... For what it's worth, I distinctly remember the BBFC "inventing" the "12" rating for cinema in 1989 when Warner Bros. kicked up a stink over the Keaton/Nicholson "Batman" movie almost being classified as a "15" (which would have torpedoed much of the intended audience from seeing it). The "funny" thing from my perspective is that I think I was about 6 or 7 when I first saw "Wrath Of Khan" on TV (with the 'controversial' content restored) - I suspect I was only allowed to see it because my Mum and Nan assumed it wouldn't be any more "edgy" than the TV series...

Halls like this don't do the guests any favors. Must've been hard for My Meyer to hear folks to answer their questions if the place had echoes or if voices trailed off into the large hall. Conventions should go out of their way to put in decent speakers and have good working microphones!

I would have asked if he accepted any recommendations of either Roddenberry or the cast. Personally, I didn't care for the naval aspect of STII. I do like his director's cut though which included some dialogue that was omitted in theaters and makes the film even more true to Star Trek for me. I agreed with Nichelle Nichol's objection on STVI that Uhura would already know the Klingon language, but Meyers must have felt the needed or wanted some comic bit of them looking in a book. Lame if you ask me. (Was the universal translator out of service? I don't recall.) Shatner's spitting hatred at the Klingons was out of character too, I felt. So, in the end, the fans who kept Star Trek alive are simply at the mercy of the next writer/director. It's gotta be tough though because I think TOS fans relationship with Star Trek is borderline personal, so you can't please everyone.

Especially in consideration of Star Trek V, in which Kirk is quite comfortable about working together with that Klingon Korrd in the matter of that Klingon guy who's gone rogue (Klaa, the guy who is p****ed because his mission is to dispose of space debris). There is even a scene where Kirk talks about admiring Korrd as a tactician, having studied him at the academy. This is totally inconsistent with the Kirk we then see in Star Trek VI. (Well, unless you assume that thestory of Star Trek V is chronologically set after Star Trek VI.)

I loved the nautical back-fill. It fit perfectly to me. Star Trek was always about the enterprise being the figurehead of the federation far from its core. To add the naval theme fleshed out so much of the Trek Universe. I doubt Uhura would have been a Klingon expert but if they had a full crew on board their military intelligence and communication unit would have. The reason they didn't use the translator was they knew it's characteristics would have been identified by the Klingons and the gig would be up.

That stuff Meyers says in the beginning about his being inspired by the books about Capt. Horatio Hornblower? He's full of it. That's straight from Roddenberry, it was one of the original inspirations for TOS. Roddenberry called his first iteration of Kirk (iirc, Capt. April), "a space-age Horatio Hornblower." I don't believe anything he says about his contribution.

Star Trek TOS was more than partially action focused and had plenty of "militaristic themes". The Cage pilot (and cast) was rejected because it wasn't action focused enough. One of the better TOS episodes "Balance of Terror" was influenced by the WW2 movie "The Enemy Below" and possibly others but it was far from the only one.

Star Trek the Motion Picture did not nearly kill the series and The Wrath of Khan did not save it. Sure they are two different kinds of movies but both are good in their own right and fans supported both. Star Trek was never one formulaic approach repeated over and over. The Voyage Home is certainly different than either one of those movies yet it is a favorite of many. If you want to look at box office numbers, The Motion Picture grossed 139 million world wide and was the 4th highest grossing movie of 1979. The Wrath of Khan did worse at the box office only grossing 97 million and was 7th of 1982. This idea Nicholas Meyer came in and saved Star Trek is nonsense.

Second, the overall profit for Star Trek TMP after deducting the budget (even including cost overruns) was 104 million dollars. The overall profit of Wrath of Kahn after deducting its budget was 85.8 million. That's 104 million in profits for TMP and 85.8 in profits for WoC yet you and a few others think Star Trek TMP with its 104 million profit nearly killed the franchise while WoC with its 85.8 million profit saved it? Nonsense Yes WoC had a higher ratio compared to its budget but it also made less money overall. Like I said before, both movies are good in their own way and are different types of movies. Star Trek TMP however, was not some kind of flop that nearly ruined the franchise as some of you want to believe. It was the 4th highest grossing movie worldwide in 1982.

@@ferdnard1152 -With respect, due to the way movie financing worked at that time, simply deducting the budget from the box office will not give you the profit. As explained in this article ( mystartrekscrapbook.blogspot.com/2011/08/1979-robert-wise-interview.html ), one has to take into account the percentage of the box office taken by the cinemas themselves, the distributors, and all the various byzantine contracted payments the various parties will take to be made whole. Fundamentally, in 1979, a movie would have to earn two to three times its original budget before it *breaks even* - so the most conservative break-even estimate for TMP would have been $126 million. In the end, TMP took in $139 million, so it did turn a profit - however it was a much more modest profit than Paramount desired and forecast. While TWoK took less at the box office overall, it returned *eight times* its budget, and in doing so convinced the Paramount suits that the franchise was worth continuing.

I disagree with the introductory comments by the host (not Meyers). STTMP wasn’t bad because it was “a thinking man’s movie” and “fans wanted more ACTION.” TMP was bad because it was a poor story with little to no human interest and conflict. Audiences want what they have always wanted - quality content - and even in today’s environment of dumbed-down everything, people are still smart enough to recognize quality when they see it. TWOK is a quality movie that has action but is not about action. It isn’t a Michael Bey movie. It’s really about human conflict and the human condition.

Actually no, it grossed the most, but it only ended up doubling its budget. Wrath of Khan quadrupled its budget. (Which was smaller) So Khan was the more profitable movie.

Weird that Meyers says he had free reign from scratch and there was no intention to save the franchise and yet ST II is based on an episode of TOS. That's very contradictory.

Harve Bennett had already decided that a significant part of the story's premise would involve the return of Khan before Meyer was brought onboard.

How is it contradictory? Bringing a character back from the series was done because it made for an interesting story. The movie stands on its own whether or not someone saw the original episode.

@@richardvinsen2385 Contradictory in the sense that he didn't care about ST canon or saving the franchise and yet the movie, at the heart of the storyline, is based on a TOS episode. BTW, a well beloved episode by ST fans. You would think he would develop a story that was not based on an original episode. I wasn't referring to the Khan character per se.

True creativity is no longer ALLOWED in Star Trek. It's a billion dollar franchise that must be micro-managed and protected by levels of accountants, lawyers, and corporate types. When Nicholas Meyer attempted to do something truly creative with The Undiscovered Country (Star Trek Meets God), the studio balked, demanded re-shoots, and the resulting theatrical release was the worst kind of HOT GARBAGE. Every Star Trek project since The Wrath Of Khan has been secretly subtitled "The Search For Cash".

Star trek 2 was epic but this guy is very political. White men, federation is bigoted and who could forget the communist philosophy in star trek 2. The needs of the many out way the needs of the few. This concept has killed millions of people. Star trek 2 was the best movie by far.

I like WRATH OF KHAN, while also thinking that it's technically overrated. (For instance, Kirk acts like a complete idiot as RELIANT approaches -- totally out of character for him.) I also didn't like the change in uniforms -- so stuffy and not at all true to ST. Honest opinion: TMP is the finest of the films, and the most TREK-like one. It has the grandest scope, as well as the best art direction, effects (still!), and -- last but definitely not least -- score (courtesy of The GOAT, JG).
