Askeladd's answer was immediate: He struck off Sweyn's head. The meeting of military leaders erupted into chaos after this act of regicide(the action of killing a King), but Canute recognized the play at hand, and killed Askeladd himself, thereby accomplishing Askeladd's aim. Canute immediately took the throne. But after witnessing the end of his father figure, Thorfinn was left empty inside. He was eventually sold into slavery to work on a farm.

I know Einer's mom had death flags from second one of being on screen, but can I just say... I love her. that character type is just a huge favorite of mine. she's sort of irreverent and rude, but in a way where you can tell that she's uncompromisingly kind. like, she'd call you an idiot, but feed you a meal, and both without any hesitation. it's just raw honesty. and it's such a quick way to give you strong affection for her. and really, I gotta hand it to the writing... every time Vinland Saga introduces a parent that's going to die early, they're always the type of person that you know you'll viscerally miss. they give you enough of them to miss. with Thors, it's all the times that they focus on his hands... specifically when he puts his hand on Thorfin's head. you can tell Thorfin would probably give anything to feel that again, and it gives you something so detailed and specific to miss about him. with Einer's mom, it's her jokes. she's sharp, and witty, and the thought of knowing her and then never getting to hear her laugh again... honestly, that's how you take the "dead anime parent" trope, and break the audience away from thinking of it as a cliche. you could call it that... but you'd be missing all the things that you'd feel if you just let yourself become invested in these people, to the point where the gap where they used to be still aches.

Thorfinn is haunted by guilt and ghosts of people he killed. in the last scene, When Einar was mentioning the Dannish soldiers. Thorfinn was with the Dannish soldiers. He was one of the those that killed Einar's family and destroyed his village. So, Nicholas, what he felt is not like "Oh! wait.."he is over this. He is just in a state of mind where he is just lost and destroyed. He is just covered with guilt, loss and pain. imagine all your life, you goal is just about dualing a man, so you don't actually see how bad and awful things you commiting, not knowing they will haunt you. Askalad's death was a slap on his face. He is depressed now. He hasn't pull himself fully together yet. He will though..

that's what I love about Vinland Saga, it's not a story about violence or political games, it's about how a person's life is negatively affected by the violence experienced, it's about learning to live even when you feel that life is not worth living, it's like getting to live when you think nothing in your life has made a difference, it's like finding true love in life and something worth protecting. It means becoming a true warrior, fighting life's true battle, learning to live when you can't see yourself as worthy of love Because was the author not hypocritical, the protagonist did a lot of bad things and now he will finally start to live for real, not erase his mistakes, but learn to live and forgive himself even if he make a lot of mistakes. Found peace, found something worth to living

I have no clue what's going to happen. but throughout the first season (prologue) the themes all seemed to be pointing in a certain direction... it all seemed to be indicating that Thorfin was wrong to hang his entire purpose in life on killing Askaladd. and now I'm so absolutely excited to see what the story does, because if I'm right... this is where we get to see Thorfin become himself for literally the very first time. it is not hyperbole for me to say that if Vinland Saga does what I hope it's going to do... then it'll be among some of my favorite narratives in the message it sends. I'm so ready.

I feel like this arc will be more about thorfinn confronting his past selves, as in einers rage and Lords sons naive ambition that thorfinn had when he was a child and learning from them while accepting his past actions and consequences they had on others lives. He's very repressed, he was so focused on his revenge he brushed everything else off. Now he's living with einer who lost everything because of people like him. I think it's beautiful and can't wait for his further emotional development, because now he's very numb. It's so much fun watching you rect to it up-to-date, because of your different mind-set and theories. But damn this seasons gonna be so good I can't wait I hate that i can't watch it all at once

Thorfinn and einar's situation is rather unique. They're technically slaves but they're in charge of clearing and overseeing the cultivation of a plot of their master's land and he said he'll pay them for the crops that they harvest, so they're more like serfs. But they also can't leave so they're also more like slaves. They're halfway in between serf and slave because unlike most other slaves, they can buy their freedom

As far as slaves in this time period have it, Thorfinn and Einar seem to have it relatively good. Sure, their food gets eaten, they're terribly overworked, and they have no freedom, but they haven't been physically or sexually abused. They even have the hope of 'earning' their freedom someday, which is unheard of. But the task ahead of them is massive. They have to clearcut an entire forest by themselves, turn it into fields, and produce enough wheat to buy back their own freedom.
