SNL was never ground breaking though. They were a little edgy at times(they still can be sometimes), but like... They've been around almost 50 years. They know what they're doing. They're not here to be an electrifying, groundbreaking, comedy show that challenges you and pushes boundaries. They're here to tell middling jokes that they can fill up with advertisements. A 50 year old TV show is something plenty of advertisers would love to get a piece of.
