Software team lead here. So first of all, sorry to hear about your lack of return offer. Second, I really hate how complicated some companies make it to hire graduate students. Like I personally never have grad students do leet code. It's so useless and disgusting. They passed their degree, they're good enough, simple as that. One live coding exercise and one interview is enough anything more is just company doing some intellectual j****** off. Third, the market might not be the same but if you wanna hear how things are from the POV of someone who's actively recruiting, let me know.
@BrainFreezeMCАй бұрын
Hey, I'm considering going to college for software engineering next year. In 5 years, do you think I can land a job?
@vivas555Ай бұрын
@@BrainFreezeMC Can ? absolutely. In the exact specific field you want for the salary you want ? Probably not but it doesn't matter. Here's a story for context. My first job, I was underpaid by 10k/y-15k/y, but it was stable and the people were good, so I stayed. In my last year, because I had now been there for 5 years they gave me that 15k/y raise. That company ended up going under soon after. My second job, I was paid 109k/y which was highly overpaid. Get that degree, enjoy it, have fun doing it, find what makes you release the goody-good chemical in your brain and let that guide you. Don't worry about jobs.

I am a self-taught dev. And it took me like almost 2 years to learn code and secure a internship. It's been 4 months. It is a startup so they did not ask any DSA, They gave me a task like If user hover over image it should remove that part and become transparent and user can download that image. I built some projects mainly full stack chat app and another reddit like app, I used these tech stack Typescript, Next js, React, Mongobd, Go, swagger doc to document api. Learning was full ngl. As I am doing internship I am learning go, understanding how Data structure works. Any suggestion you want to give me, like What should I focus to become good SWE and build cool projects?

Hi, I completely agree with your perspective. As a junior CS student working in web development on campus, I've also noticed how companies often prioritize LeetCode skills over practical experience. It feels like the focus should be on real-world problem-solving and relevant skills rather than just algorithmic puzzles.

College is so stupid, Im already full time employed as a web developer at 20(im 21 now) and currently have 4 interviews, 3 of which are for 6 figure full time jobs. Ive literally only been coding for 2 years and im self taught. Why does anyone pose at coding doing these internships and still not get it? I have all these opportunities because I avoided the fluff of acting like a programmer at school, drinking my latte, making videos and actually learned the skills that made me desirable.

How did you land the interviews? What did you put on your resume? Personal Projects?

I failed to even get an internship 😂. I live in London UK. After trying for a year living off my savings, I gave up. I personally don't think it's the market I'm just not good enough. Currently, I am doing my pgce and qts which is basically a teaching certification. I still enjoy coding and computing and even though I a not good enough to get a job I want to stay involved with it as much as possible. Good luck to all job seekers out there.

a word of warning concerning college: that "prestigious" college was just a marketing ruse to steal your money. you'll never get rich working a job cuz you don't OWN the business so your pay will never equal the effort you put in. salaries are an EXPENSE to the business so the worker interest is in direct opposition to that of the business owner which is to increase profits. in fact most are overworked and underpaid at their job. also, if you have more time you can make more money, but with more money you can't buy time. the best thing you can do is to commit suicide so businesses can no longer exploit your labor anymore. real talk and it didn't take a phD degree to figure that out. ;P

I feel you buddy! I'm looking for a new job as well. I have to say, the job market nowadays is confusing. Many companies keep outsourcing entry-level positions while desperately searching for experienced senior engineers. Don't they realize that experienced engineers don't just appear out of thin air? I finally understand what it means when they say “Outdated production relations hinder the development of productive forces.”

I recently got hired as an SDET, it was only because I had a reference. My tech challenge was to find the bugs in their homemade calculator. It was a Clojure jar file...I ended up reverse engineering it and reworking the entire file. They've since improved it to be easier to fuzz...but what fun is it that? Any way my point is...I applied to tons of places, none replied back despite my background. It's awful right now, don't give up!

Don't stress about it after you graduate with a degree and 6 internships in your pocket you're probably killing it already for a starter job. If you dont get anything (doubt it really do) come to Europe developers are here always spammed by job offers. Probably wont be making 100k but in Europe 70k is already killing it.
