As a Microsoft SWE, advice is to focus on soft skills. Engineering skills are still important, but if you demonstrate a willingness to learn and have strong communication/soft skills. You will be so far ahead of other candidates, even if you end up bombing a leetcode style interview. Teams want someone that they can collaborate with easily and effectively. Passion shines through on interviews, I feel that's why companies will invest in non-traditional graduates like the employee in this video. They have broken out of their traditional background because they have a genuine interest in tech and usually aren't just in it for the paycheck.

Seems like these people were lucky with timing, they got into the industry around 2020 or before and don't really understand how difficult it is to even get interviews nowadays. I remember I saw a video where they said if you were to see Google employees resumes from 2020 and compare it to what's required nowadays, they would be automatically disqualified by most hiring managers these days because the bar to entry and expectations has gotten unreasonably more higher now

@@Anon-jz7iw Agree 100%, I will start CS at 28yr, because today´s industry is just a bit closed for career switchers, and even more if you come from a career totally different. But as the video mentioned, these people studied and did a lot of self-taught learning.

Ive been applying for software engineer jobs the past year and still nothing yet, been networking an insane amount online. Attending meetups and still nothing so far, it is brutal. Job prospects should improve when the Fed cuts interest rates from my understanding. Interest rates for borrowing money has been at a 20 year high for the past two years to combat the crazy inflation that happened during the pandemic. I think once that happens either in September or as late as November the hiring blockade may ease for tech. Again this is just my shallow understanding but what i gathered from a few articles on the topic

Yeah it's F'd up and is about the money. Companies have been holding tight to budgets to save their asses while watching one another to make moves on hiring. Some candidates get gaslit from recruiters, take interviews, have conversations about contract conversions then they just pullout and cancel everything at the last minute. Prayers the rate cuts help and for Bitcoin to reach new ATH so we can retire early.

To be completely honest with you working in Europe is much better than in Valley. I would say that my standard of living is 2x of average valley engineer. My buddy moved here from Seatle as game developer and he says that expect coffee it's the best decision he ever made. i'm surprised that these guys work there living like students in 2 room flat, instead of owning a flat/house and driving Audi.

@kukuricapica
@kukuricapica 4 ай бұрын
@@tmswfrk There are TONs of jobs. If you need something secure the financial and medical institutions always hiring some engineers because they often have multinational teams. Easiest way would be to send CV via LinkedIn (in Europe it's the quickest way). You can look up salaries but expcet to get anywhere between 3000-7000 euros a month. If you want you can be an contractor and then you can get even more. Most companies will even help you get work VISA. With that kind of money you can expect to have nice flat, in time you can buy a car and you are golden. Insurance and healthcare is included. I would also like to add that you will make friends really easy and if you ask someone (maybe some cute colleague) to show you around they will be more than happy to do it. Anyway i hope you will be happy wherever you end up.

@@tmswfrk This is simply untrue unless you live in Switzerland. Keep in mind these guys in the Valley or Bay areas are saving a lot of money or investing it in stocks or other forms of equity. They are young so why not live like that for a few years. What you do have in Europe is more holidays (essentially, the entire summer). But why would you trade living in a diverse and social area full of people with your interests to a continent where you would only be happy during your holidays and where the culture is very different and not as accepting of foreigners. Are you ready to learn one or two languages other than English? Are you ready to bring in a third or half of your current salary while paying more in taxes? if you want to have a normie life, sure, Europe sounds better, if you are white. Other than that, the Bay and Valley areas sound like a much better bet for your life, happiness and career. Try to surround yourself with less toxic individuals, not everyone in Valley or Bay are stereotypical toxic tech bros. There are good people I believe.

Today’s software industry, as I often describe it, feels like a “monkey business.” It reminds me of the countless street musicians playing for a few coins. The deeper issue lies in modern city life-essentially a massive prison. From a young age, people are funneled into the same path: school, college, university, graduation, and then a career tethered to a laptop. But amidst this race to build a “laptop life,” who is left to plant the tomatoes, raise the chickens, or bake the bread that everyone depends on? This disconnect reveals a fundamental flaw in how we structure our priorities and sustain ourselves as a society.

They are lying to you when they say that they're not scared of AI . I'm going into tech not as a coder but as a network engineer and I can tell you there's a lot to be afraid of when it comes to AI. The real problem comes when these geniuses decide to put AI on a Quantum chip and that day is definitely coming within the next 10 years maybe less.

AI isn't going to take your jobs. It learns on what it's trained to do. People still need to train them and there still needs to be people to actually create products. AI doesn't have the ability to do that. It doesn't have creativity the way people do. Most of the stuff AI can do right now has been around for a pretty long time it just hasn't been publicly available like it is now. Now people who are just entering the industry or not in it see what AI can do and are terrified. You don't need to be. You need to learn how to utilize it and how it works so you can reverse engineer it and make it better. If you're terrified of AI while in school you're going into the wrong industry.

you are throwing bunch of buzzwords around man. quantum computing thing was abandoned long ago, now investors try to get at least academic returns from it. ai is more likely to get rid of trade jobs than swe

They aren't lying when they say they aren't afraid of AI. The devil is in the details. It gets the details wrong a lot. To the point where it's unusable. It will never get the intricate details right. You always need a software engineer to fine tune. In order to fine-tune you need to know what's going on.

Nurotypicals lean on this skill completely unconsciously: It’s called cognitive dissonance, the ability to hold two opposing ideas, not really a bad thing, I imagine they’re some scared of certain aspects of ai, look at the whole picture but don’t actually consciously attach the risk to anything they do for a living, as it impossible to predict the future, even though you probably could predict most large lay offs, if your constantly looking out for it you’d go insane.
