For me, there's a hole at the centre of this donut. We don't actually know what "consciousness" is. We don't have a generally accepted working description or definition. I've sometimes pondered if the universe as we know it is itself THE simulation. By that I mean, you understand how if you look at the sun reflected on a pond on a windy day the waves reflect the sun and break it up into sparkles and dark in a repeating yet random pattern. To do this with a computer requires ridiculous amounts of processing effort. Yet the water and the sun does this in real time -- no processing at all. Seemingly. But what if that was specifically it? What if the fact that water and light do this IS a real time simulation of what those "conceptual things" would do? What if reality itself is a giant, distributed processing system that calculates and processes in real time? We could be living in a real universe as we know it, completely unaware that reality itself IS the simulation.

This is an excellent observation. Think about your brain itself, which holds your consciousness. It doesn't directly detect the world its in, but uses the organs of the body to approximate a representation of the world that best suits our biological hardware. In this sense what we experience is a simulation based on software (consciousness) and hardware (biology).

I've imagined that maybe prior beings had evolved so much that eventually they reached a state of being stagnant blobs of brain. With no more real struggles or resistance from the real world. So they created a simulation that they could enter, to experience real life, to grow and evolve. And the only way it could work is if you went in new, with no awareness of anything so you would perceive that simulation as real.

the basic flaw to his argument is that assuming consciousness is a result of computing power. There is literally zero evidence that consciousness arises as a result of computing power. Computing as we construct it is also based on lineair algorithms which have a start-direction-end. I’m trying to simply open my mind for other possibilities. Maybe consciousness is the cause of a reality that computes itself through non-lineair quantum computing, where there are no separations between anything. That which is being computed reflects the computing reflects itself etcetera. Any statement of “simulation” must have a reference point of what indeed remains “reality”. If by this logic, a subject in a simulation can figure out it is being simulated, it must do so based on a point of reference that is unmistakingly provable to be real or reality. If the subject in a simulation has no point of reference to a provable concept of some real reality, then anything it refers to as being a simulation is reality itself. It will find itself reflecting upon its own situation, where it thought itself to be real for it needed a concept of real to survive and evolve. Or maybe not, animals can live and evolve without any concepts of real or simulation. So, what is actually happening is that we are constructing higher and complexer levels of language that are reflecting to our understanding mind the situation in which it is experiencing, and the very thin almost soluble layer of truth to be experienced that remains as a result of that.

Life in this universe contains so much existential contradiction and lack of consensus that it is most likely to be an temporary simulation meant for individual training with efficient feedback as an fundamental idea or intensjon, this is the only concept that makes sense. So in my opinion the point of life in this "fake" or virtual universe being some kind of an subjective consciousness trainer with "physical"(virtual) reality outplayed on demand, with or without several consciousness individual bits of consciousness part taking, is the most logical alternative. There is so many different worlds, but we have just one world....Mark Knophler sings, lets substitute we with one to "but one have just one world"...then it makes perfect sense. Thomas Campbell must be happy with Bostrøms effort in this matter!

@@xspotbox4400 That's materialism (which Kuhn) has mentioned many times in his channel . it's a Collective consciousness , (some physicists call it Cosmic consciousness) . Information saved in each particle also affects other particles, like the "measuring device" serves as the extension of an Observer. That's why it remains a goat. Quantum mechanics actually points to a middle way between these two extremes of materialism and solipsism, a realization that both Werner Heisenberg and Wolfgang Pauli eventually reached. This means that the formulation of quantum mechanics actually points to the philosophical viewpoint of the Middle Way which would allow us to include the role of consciousness in quantum physics without ending up in the extremes of either solipsism or materialism.

I often see discussions about the simulation hypothesis involve "computing power". I don't think computing power much matters. What matters is the algorithm. If a simulation ran very slowly in base reality (as Musk describes), things within the sim would have no idea. If in base reality, the computer that runs the simulation takes an hour to calculate one minute of time within the simulation, the sentient creatures in the simulation wouldn't know. The computer could even pause and resume without the creatures within noticing. I do find it interesting the universe culls like a video game. In quantum mechanics, the wave function doesn't collapse until observation. No sense rendering something that isn't being observed.
@xspotbox4400

Why bother, programmers could make you blind and dumb to details they don't want you to see and think about. Computer power matters a lot, you would need way more electricity to power computers than reality actually uses to exist. Wave function doesn't have anything to do with observers, it collapses because of the measurement, because any device used will become a part of the experiment.

Consciousness or Spirit or Life is like water. The cosmos is the source of life as the ocean is the source of water. The water is one and at the same time, water can be many. The water in my home is different from the water in the ocean , even though it came from the ocean. And when I make a beverage in a cup, then that water becomes different with its own individuality. It becomes my tea, my coffee, my juice, etc. The spirit is like Life in the cosmos, and/or the water in the ocean. When a spirit becomes alive in some life form, ie. plants or animals, then that life becomes unique with its own personality or individuality.

And what is more: some things we have been discovering somehow sound or appear kinda suspiciously like built-in easter eggs or clues: "did they discover the mathematical undecidabilities, yet?", that kind of thing, complex numbers, Fibonacci, that unreasonable effectiveness of math, milestones to mark the progress of the minds under controlled growing??

We assume that whatever being is creating the simulation are "experts" at this. They can simulate an entire universe. What if we are in an early model. I just think the presumption that if they have the ability to do this, they have the best ability. A "me" simulation would be significantly easier to run than a multiple simulitanius consciousness process. Plus given the significantly small take only full simulating one person, means you could run many more of the same simulation at the same time or of multiple single consciousness and statistically complaining the results.

That's like the question, if realism or antirealism is true. But that we can not answer, it's a distinction (bisection) in thinking. Same for the question of determination and freedom, it's both the same. 🤷‍♂️

I think telephones, laptops and televisions are very close to simulated consciousness. When you talk on the telephone for instance , you’re not actually talking to a person you’re talking to a bunch of wires and electrodes. When you’re talking to someone on a laptop, you’re actually talking to an interface , you’re talking to a machine and the machine is reproducing a conscious experience as an illusory feedback. This may be slightly off-topic But it does show how Consciousness can be fooled by machines
