Takes me back to the winter of early 2005. A blustery, cold, snowy winter that was. I was in Slovakia and purchased this CD, mainly because I thought "Hallelujah" would be a dark, Rufus Wainwright-like cover of Cohen's classic. Man, how wrong I was, and I've never been so happy to be wrong in my life. I spent the subsequent weeks trudging through the snowy streets, listening to this whole album again and again. I then bought his spoken-word album, "The Secret Life of the Love Song/The Flesh Made Word," featuring many of the songs from this album and "The Boatman's Call," listening through headphones, getting stoned on cheap rum and cigarettes in a Slovak dive bar. I still look back on that as one of my life's greatest pleasures.

Mr. Cave and his partners in crime are one of the very few remaining staples of outlandishly good music This song makes me cry everythime I hear it. The ending (20 pretty girl to carry them in, 20 deep holes to bury them in) gets me every time.

Especially singing that part himself, as opposed to the backing on the album? This was even more beautiful.

Just... wow! I hadn't heard this song since probably the year it came out, when my late husband - who was a huge Nick Cave fan, going back to The Birthday Party days - bought it. My husband took his own life the following month, so over the interim years I hadn't listened to Nick Cave, just too painful. But on hearing this again, I'm taken to an all new place of appreciation for Nick and my husband's love of his art. I think I'll be rediscovering this talented musician - it's time... Thank you for posting!

I was also happy on that first listen to see it wasn't just another cover of Cohen's Hallelujah.
