Jesus wakes every morning and rings Nick up and has him stroll down for tea and a little morning concert for the angels. They just sit there smiling, nodding, transfixed. Jesus shakes his head in disbelief and they just laugh together til 9 or 10am. Great way to your day.

I love this song however dark and painful as it may be, I have a Black Eyed Dog.. She's my ol ball and chain that keeps me coming and going.. things to do today, let dog out, let dog in, let dog out, and then let her in, repeat last three steps. Nick You were only here for such a short time, but your music will go on forever. Thank You for your passion, Music. R.I.P .

Nick had to record the guitar and vocals separately on his last few tracks. I think the guitar is so good that it works as a standalone piece without the dark and haunting vocals.

I am glad but a little surprised that others think the same thing I do about the 'black-eyed dog." I have worked Mental Health over 16 years and some afflicted with severe depression said they sometimes felt that it was like a beast of some sort that took shape in the corners of dark rooms. When I first heard this song a few years ago that is what I remembered, and I often wonder if that had any had anything to do with the lyrics.

original (?) recording from those last 4 sessions joe boyd talked about in that documentary...when nick couldnt even sing and play guitar at the same time. that's the condition he was in. the utter sadness that this brings me is remarkable. i never knew they guy and have only heard his music and testimonies from those who had known him, yet I feel so strongly. that says something...something that can't be said. not with words at least. love

By the way, if he could play like this I can hardly believe his condition was as dreadful as often is mentioned. But I surely think he wasn't able to concentrate on playing and singing at the same time
@johnarundell79519 жыл бұрын
+henkn2 he could play no doubt he was extremely gifted but his condition in his last 2 or 3 years was very, very bad. A tribute book to him with help from his sister Gabrielle was released recently which contains diary entries from his father from March '72 until the end in November '74. He was almost completely dysfunctional and worse than I ever thought. It's absolutely heartbreaking :/ he was only 23, yet to turn 24, with three failed masterpieces under his belt when the diary begins, and he was obviously going downhill for a long time before that. It is called 'Remembered For A While' from 2014, highly recommended.

Nick was SO far of his time that most people haven't cottoned onto what he was going through every day of his life. He felt that the way we segregate & operate society didn't suit him at all. And there seemed to be no alternative for those who deliberately wavered where avarice was concerned. He said once that he was "a slave to my music or free to do nothing". This demonstrates his disdain for the economy & how frustrated he felt; requiring a life of subservience or charity in order to justify his existence, because his music wasn't good enough for the world. Even though it was enough for him. Today, there is an alternative. The *Venus Project* , which would have suited Nick's caring but vulnerable nature. No money, free education, travel, healthcare, housing, food, energy, etc. No politics, war, belief, poverty, punishment, prisons, etc. Which is still way ahead of its time tbh. Nick described the problems we face & that a caring, selfless, sensitive & talented individual is not welcome in today's society. He.. like we all... felt that everything felt wrong. He's not wrong.

Hi Renee, sorry about not putting the accent on your 1st name- I think I have a French keyboard- maybe it's on my laptop and I am NOT an "under 20" either... Yesterday I got some disconcerting news at my physician's - I see a G.P. for therapy too as I had to charge a psychiatrist with sex abuse- not relative to Nick, except to say, he'd be on my side and wouldn't have slugged the sicko but Nick DID know all about the BLUES- THAT KIND? Maybe you aren't one of his fans who is prone to melancholy- I came home from my doctors with an "evil, low down, gargoyle kind of mental monster sitting atop a mound of self- destructive thoughts and so I turned to Nick- I adore him, I did from the 1st glimpse of his handsome face, those lips! ( Leonard Cohen is, next to my partner, MY MAN, but Nick was suddenly on my mind, earlier, at the doc's Rod Stewart "popped" in, You Wear it Well- I felt SO old when I saw the release date! Great song that has held up too- I love music and no, I DON'T hear voices- thankfully- I have had friends who committed suicide because they did- Nick's Black Eyed Dog, also beautifully and powerfully covered by sweet, Lisa Hannigan- I am sorry for bending your ear, nobody else is up and I am lonely and terrified- thus Nick. I still can't figure out why, with say, Donovan, soft voice, pithy songs, great melodies- he "makes" it, Nick doesn't- WHY? There were so many incredible, including The Incredible Stringband! unique, game changing, as it were, band then- American folk, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Dylan, John Prine, The Byrds, even, I could go on and on...Thanks for reading- please don't refer to me as "stupid, or rambling or nonsensical " I am not well, physically or mentally, like Nick I have/had a small drug problem- I graduated from University with near all A's- too many, snide, under 25 year olds who think they know everything and their ignorance of even basic grammar is so appalling- and then they have the nerve to correct or tell me off when it is THEIR mistake- sorry to bend your ear- I won't bother you again- I saw you too are older, wiser, kinder and if you love Nick- you are welcome in our home if you ever in this neck of the Canadian woods! Any of your ideas as to why Nick didn't get the recognition he desired would be appreciated. This take on Black Eyed Dog is a gem- I too love You Tube for fans who own massive collections and share them- Bless Nick Drake and Eliot Smith- he "made it" I guess but "demons" personal "failings" in his mind as in Nick's- hello to a nice person who won't critique my grammar etc! Got a fav Nick song ? I love Cello Song for the melody and Hazy Jane - but there's no song I DONT love. Namaste Holly "Hazy Jane" Golightly

Nick Drake is ALIVE and well. Living in California. Married with 3 children. He has a wind farm and grows onions. His suicide was a stunt so he could retire from music and drugs. Music wasn't working for him in 72 so he started a new life in the USA. Living off grid with no Internet (lucky man) he also breeds dogs (beagles) and has a fish farm (rainbow trout) he is talking to Harvey goldsmith about a concert at the Albert hall in the spring of 2019. We hold our breath. Heartbreaking if it doesn't happen for his 100s of fans.
