“The Second”: Carol Anderson on the Racist Roots of the Constitutional Right to Bear Arms

Do African Americans have Second Amendment rights? That’s the question Emory University professor Carol Anderson set out to answer in her new book, “The Second,” which looks at the constitutional right to bear arms and its uneven application throughout U.S. history. She says she was prompted to write the book after the 2016 police killing of Philando Castile, who was fatally shot during a traffic stop after he told the officer he had a legal firearm. Anderson says the Second Amendment was always intended to be a means of arming white people to control the Black population. “There was this massive fear about these slave revolts, Black people demanding their freedom, being willing to have an uprising to gain their freedom,” says Anderson. “What I saw was that it wasn’t about guns. It was about the fear of Black people.”

I grew up in VA, moved back after retiring from USMC. The state is crisscrossed with pockets of confederate pride and entrenched racism. I'm convinced this "fear" of black people is all based in guilt. There's a strong desire to rewrite history in order to keep those past actions and still present intentions from seeing the full light of day.

I wouldn't wish too hard, her information is very misleading and misinformative. There's absolutely nothing racist about the 2nd amendment, as the 2nd amendment mentions nothing about skin color, race, gender, etc. It simply declares that citizens have the right to bear arms, regardless of their skin color or anything else. What's racist is all the gun control laws that have come since the 2nd amendment that have tried to limit it's scope. Almost all of which have their origins in attempting to prevent black people, specifically freed slaves in that era, and then Black Panthers in their era, from obtaining the means to protect themselves from corrupt law enforcement officers and others who would seek to harm them or their families. Gun control is and always have been inherently racist. You want to empower someone, put in a gun in their hands so they can protect themselves. That's what the 2nd amendment, (the one the Left, supposedly the ones in support of minorities, is so against) seeks to do - give citizens the right to protect themselves from foreign or domestic threats. Gun control (which the Left so fervently advocates for) has always been about stopping minorites and other socioeconomically oppressed people from protecting themselves. It's time to see through the bullshit. Stop letting these people lie to you

She didn’t state anything based in reality. She spewed lie after lie. She comes up with theories of what happened by what she thinks happened in her head. She stated NO facts at all. The 2nd amendment was never racist. Gun control has absolutely been racist. Every black person should have the right to own a gun and should exercise that right.

There wasn't a police force in the USA until they needed them to hunt runaways from slavery. Slaves were considered property. Read the documents, the police were created to protect property, not individuals. The Supreme Court has stated in law that the Police have no legal duty to protect citizens. Their duty was and is to protect property. The enslaved were the property they were first designed to protect. Considered to be the property of the slaveowners. You can read those Supreme Court documents and news articles online. The Supreme Court decision had been upheld as late as 2018, and is being challenged because of recent school shootings. Please, do the research. Understand what's happening. Know the law, and your rights.

@ curtis brown The initial commentor is right. This is why it’s important to know American history. The police force started in the south who were the original bounty hunters for runaway slaves, these bounty hunters would even go as far as kidnapping runaway enslaved people who fled to the north to bring them back south. This the slave patrol began. Something else happened in the North during the 19th century immigrants were flooding the gates Elis island in NYC. Mostly all were poor and working in sweat shops. The Irish and Italians begin to form gangs that were running rampant in the city. This was happening right around the time enslaved blacks in the south became emancipated and began to move up North to find work. One of the ways to keep the blacks oppressed further was to give Irish and Italians White status. This they became white citizens and were now being asked to join the police force to help keep blacks in their place. This also helped to minimize the crime between the Irish and Italians. Here’s a little history lesson 101.

I first heard this on the Thom Hartman show years ago. It seems Virginia was the most powerful state when the constitution was written, and most of it's thinking is in the constitution and its amendments. The very fact that the ownership of property was very important to those that created our government still affects us today. By property I include human slaves. The fact that the British tide against slavery at the time was rising is one reason for our revolutionary war. It was slavery and access to Native American land that helped unite our country more than unfair taxation.

I don’t think people realize, that tragedy that happened at that black grocery store in Buffalo, NY was basically how the colonization raids went but instead of one guy doing the dirt…thousands pulled up and just started wiping people out. Or the tragedy in Tulsa Oklahoma; and back then there was no investigation and nobody went to jail for it. The powers that be looked the other way or endorsed it. We read about colonization and slavery in history books but how often do we sit to think and imagine what those scenes really looked like? They look like what we see every week now on the news. WM putting people of color in the dirt for hate, fear, greed, and sport.

Really , I learned from this respectable professor in 30 minutes that I never learned in 4 years of University and 47 years living and working in America as an Engineer. We need a new start. We do not have a proud history of 250 years. Our so called civilization is based on 250 years of genocide , slavery racism and murderous imperialism. Therefore we are not a civilized country. But we have a rich industrialized country that has been covering up our uncivilized aspect of our society. Now our political elite imperialism is hitting the bottom the true nature of us being not civilized is showing its ugly face. We need to invent a civilization and a culture based on human right and justice; or we are headed towards an uglier barbarism. We need to design our own Socialism; because the present one percent ruling elites is not even capable of designing it let alone implement it. Look at '' our'' current government and establishment: they are openly saying we must bleed the Russians in Ukraine till the last standing Ukrainians. Is this our humanity?. Look what our government did to people of Iraq and Afghanistan. the same thing await us by ''our'' so called one percent ruling elites. If we continue to watch the corporate media, we are bound to get brainwashed. We need a revolution by working class. In today's society even Doctors and Engineers are working class. Our soldiers are also working class. We must unite with our soldiers; even some of military Brass are with us . They are tired of being brainwashed and murdering people of other countries for corporates profits . That is why we have so much suicide amongst the returning veterans. Greetings from Iran/ California.

A most excellent dissertation of American history. Dr. Anderson's recap of recorded dates, events and persons is highly impressive 👏🏾. 🤔🤔So this subject is along the lines of what is regarded as "critical race theory". If I were white and was trying to maintain the status quo, I wouldn't want this type of teaching in schools. This exposes white people of past history which links them to their descendents (the generation of the immediate 75 to 100 years). It exposes this present generation of the last 100 years and those to this very year of 2022 as being no different from one another. The language is the only thing that has changed and some of the tactics of appeasement. The mindset has not been removed. To allow this to be taught in public schools would cause too many non whites to look at the present generation of whites as direct links to such injustice and evil. They do not want to be exposed. I salute Democracy Now for having this information available on their platform.

The people who enslaved others wanted to make sure the enslaved didn't have arms. That is the best argument in favor of the 2 Amendment I ever heard.

@@belkyhernandez8281 Unfortunately, that argument isn't entirely correct, because the slaves could arm themselves when other weapons. Disarming black people of guns didn't happen until the Civil War, which 200K saved the Northern states Lilly WHT Arse.

@@mr.c2039 They might have armed themselves with other weapons but that doesn't change the fact that enslavers intentionally didn't want slaves to be armed or have weapons of any kind thus putting the enslaved at a disadvantage.

Excellent report. Thank you. Makes one wonder how history is taught in schools. In 2013 Lisa Graves, executive director of CMD, Center for Media and Democracy, updated the Bill Moyers report ‘ The United States of ALEC’, the American Legislative Exchange Council. The NRA and ALEC have continued with their lobbying to prevent gun control legislation - national and local.

I cannot wait to start reading this book tomorrow! I always knew that the 2nd Amendment was designed to hurt us, not help us. Now I have the documentation. Why didn't I have Dr. Anderson in college? Amazing and smart.

How could the 2nd amendment be " a payoff to the south" when the bill of wrights was written befor the civil war? The history of gun individual gun ownership goes back to colonial days, way befor blacks touched foot on a plantation. The british and french allowed colonists to own property and defend it, spanish colonists were not allowed to defend land without spanish military action. This is part of why the spanish had loosely held lands, and the north american indians had to fight harder against british colonists, the british colonists were promised land and were used as a psudo military (militia) to defend land claims of the british crown. The spanish were NOT given any promise of land nor ARMS to hold the land. Black people are absolutely a powerful and integral part of America, but I have to say the second amendment was not born of racism, it was born of British crown trying to entice europeans to go stake out lands for the crown, its absolutely all about a liberalization of the colonial and giving them some rights innorder to get more land than the spanish. The theory was that if the pesants think they are defwnding their land, they will hold it better than spanish colonists who have to wait for the military to get there.

The scary thing about the truth, people are often scared of those they’ve down wrong, for fear of revenge and retaliation, which is probably why so many people are arming themselves these days, sadly, for when people mistreat anyone, or done anything to, for any reason, jealousy, lying, stealing or just hate, people don’t like to be reminded of the past, especially when the things they’ve done makes them look bad and might even could send them to jail...fear is a powerful weapon that can lead s9me people doing even worse, like what Hitler did to the Jews in WWII, and when one look around the world by authoritarian leaders, usually made up of the affluent and many wealthy land owners...people throughout history have been using those they’ve conquered as slaves for cheep labor, which is why many corporations moved elsewhere for low cost labor, who are even now complaining about “intellectual prosperity theft”, white supremacy or any group of successful people is about superiority’s, like in sports, everyone loves a winner, people worship hero’s, and famous people, who’ve have become fabulously wealthy and powerful, which is why those who feel superior to others either physically or intellectually want to be wealthy to afford the, so called, good life, etc....it’s human nature and it doesn’t matter what race or nationality you are, the more narcissistic or ego driven a person is the more likely they are to do whatever they need to do to become wealthy or famous....greed and hatred often leads good person down a dark path of corruption and crime...

FYI~Hitler killed white people who were pretending to be "Jews" for referring to themselves as TMH's chosen people who are the "children of Israel, tribe of Judah" who are a "dark skinned people" who have "melanin" a person that is NOT a so called blaCK is NOT a "real Jew" they "Jewish" meaning they are "identity thieves" or "fake Jews" Jeremiah 14:2 & 17:4 is Biblical proof; the REAL Jews are the so called blaCK people in America that were brought over from West Africa during the trans-Atlantic slave trade; ask yourself this question: if the Jews that fled Jerusalem in 70 a.d. were white they would NOT be able to hide themselves from other white people who were subjugating them, so this means the REAL JEWS who fled Jerusalem which was destroyed by evil white people were, and STILL are the so called blaCK people of America !! ✂️
