This move was played in Hikaru no Go, wasn't it? Where Hikaru finds the old Kifu of Shuusaku's games, and finds that brilliant move. *epiphany* It was one of Shuusaku's actual games!

The actual thing is that Shusaku was a student of the spirit trapped in the board until he died. The spirit goes back to sleep inside the board until Hikaru finds the board and goes through the same deal as Shusaku.

@10:28 The student who answers must have misread the passage in the book. He says it was in “1942,” but according to wikipedia, the ear-reddening game was played in 1846. Nick originally said it was 18-something at the start of the video too, and I think he just didn’t catch when the studnet said 19.

This game is so great this is my first day of learning and knowing of it. I love how mentally involved it is. It reminds me of chess but at least for me with the movement of chess pieces its so much harder see than how the pieces work in Go.

31:30 I was thinking about 16/9, one point jump upwards from the black group. would also be sente and facing more towards the centre. But the diagonal jump was also very elegant :)

That one is not good, because even though it saves the black group, it doesn't threaten to save the 18-12 stone so white doesn't have to response to that, so that move is actually gote for black, not to mention it leaves a big openning on the right side, and with a white move like 18-10 it will be a pain for black to stop white from invading.

This game should convince anybody who wonders -- would they be Pro level in Today's game? YES!!!!! The level of reading , direction, fighting, and other basics shown in this game by both sides -- and the fact that it is very hard to criticize their moves even today should convince anyone that these two would be considered at least low dan professional 1-2P in any era with the knowledge and skills that they had then. I don't think Eric Li or Calvin Sun , or even Hajin Lee could beat these two if they were taken in time machine back to that era with today's knowledge at their disposal. The reason is the Kome Rule. As white, Genin Inseki or Shusaku would win against low dan pros from Japan and America for sure. Remember, they were used to no Kome and thus played very complicated and aggressive style to stay in the game after black's initiative. I've head ignorant people blatantly say that since their era didn't know what we do today that their top players would only be strong Amateurs today and it's simply not true. That's the same as saying that Babe Ruth would not be a Major Leaguer today in our game, or that Bill Russel would not be a professional power forward in Today's NBA. Pure Arrogance.

@@Someone-hi1nt I was merely stating that the old pros would still be pros today. For instance, Go Seigen and Sakata Eio were the top 2 professionals in 1950-1960. The estimated ELO score of Sakata Eio based on computer analysis and pro reviews back in the 50's and 60's was around 3300-3375 ELO. Go Seigen beat him like 8-2 in a 10 game match with no Komi, and taking white to go 2nd most of those games. That would put a prime Go Seigen's ELO at over 3500, since he was winning most of the games with a 1 stone handicap. That would make Go Seigen a top 40 player today. Bill Russel averaged 25 rebounds and estimated 7 blocks per game during some seasons in the NBA. He was 6-10 and ran like a deer. He could jump out of the gym, and he played super intelligently. To say the Bill Russell, even dropped into today's NBA would not at least start for the New Orleans Pelicans is pure arrogance. Babe Ruth used to barnstorm against the black teams in the offseason. He hit HR's against the likes of Bullet Bob Rogan and Satchel Paige in competitive games. He hit 342 BA with insane slugging and HR numbers, while hitting like 8 triples a season. In no world does that Babe Ruth not at least make a MLB roster in his prime, if dropped into ANY era of baseball. You know that his records took 40 years to break right? The all time greats would be at least pros no matter what era they drop into. Don't even get me started on Wilt Chamberlain. If today's league can't deal with Giannis or the white dude Jokic in Denver, then a guy 2x as athletic with an IQ over 140 would tear them apart!

Sean Hiska not sure if you still want to know but it is like so: first imagine it spelt as shuusaku. Notice the double u, that is an elongated "u" sound and is similar to an "oo" as in "shoe". The saku part should have no emphasis. It isn't saaaku which would sound like what nick says. The underlying sound is the same as the beginning of"sock" but it should be shortened. Finally the "Ku" should sound closer to "ck" but a slight "u" sound still be present. That's how you say it. Refer to Japanese people actually saying it if you want to learn properly.
