I was about 36 when i first used a games console - Resident Evil 1 was my first game & Tomb Raider 1 followed by TR 2 & 3 ( with a good few other games in between) I stopped playing games not long after after i'd played TR The Last Revelation & Chronicles. I haven't been on any game console for roughly 20 years until around 4 months back when, i got a PS2 off ebay. And the first 3 games i played were TR 1 2 & 3 . I got the console specifically to re - do the first games i did back in the late 90s. ( Though, my Thumb had to get used to the battering from the D-Pad again) I'm now about 2 levels from completing TR Anniversary which is a good tribute to the first game but, the music in the original is a lot better than the Anniversary. I'm an original Tomb Raider Fan, I started playing the first game the week it came out and it made me the game freak I still am. We became so into the game that players competed with each other and posted hints and stuff online at the old forum. I posted as Nohjekim. I finally played the first Tomb Raider all the way through without using any med packs. That became the test, for games after that up to game four when they changed how it worked. It started you at each level with full health and that was all you got for the whole level to complete it, and both I and a player in Australian played the game all the way through without saving in any level. If you died you had to start over. I've played all the games multiple times and can't wait for the new series, they better hurry though, I'm 82 now and my playing buddy is 85. From a financial standpoint it did sell better) -No mention of expansions (again, focus was on main entries. Expansions didn't do much to progress the franchise) -Rise of the TR released on PC January 2016, a few months after the xbox release in the fall (Yes, but it was still the next fiscal year) And if you want to know more about Shadow of the Tomb Raider, I'll have a full early review on Monday morning, in addition to a direct comparison where I'll have a full visual breakdown of the games graphics. I don't know how old you are but you are either lying or misinformed about Tomb Raider 2(I'm going with misinformed because unlike others I like to think more positive) T2 is the best received game by fans. Heck I prefer the 1st one(1996) over every single title EVER made but Tomb Raider 2 is the most beloved. I get drowned out every single time(from 1998-2018). Don't read wiki. They weren't around when this game came out. Tomb Raider 2 brought Lara to the highest level of popularity she has ever achieved. When II came out you couldn't walk around town without running into Lara. It's been downhill ever since. Especially with the disappointment of III. Now we have the awful new series that has turned her into a crybaby splitting the fanbase. With each new title the sales drop further and further. Fans are not pleased. But let me tell you man II(1998) is still the king. It even went up against the popularity of Resident Evil 2, held its ground and like a prime Roy Jones Jr knocked it out in sales. As much as I want 1996 to be the champ. It's not. Tomb Raider II was Lennox Lewis back in a time when Moses was parting the Red Sea and Ms Spears was annoying my ears. Oh Christ I miss the 90s. Edited(Forgot to add this): Great Vid. You are BRILLIANT!

I loved playing the old games as a kid. I would get stuck on the puzzles and spend a long time jumping over all the platforms trying to figure it out. The silence felt very immersive because, as Lara, I would be stuck in a tomb thinking out the next part of the puzzle and feel the ancient stillness of the stone walls around me. The pacing was great because the quiet puzzle would be offset by sudden action of a wolf or bear running out of a hole and attacking me. The action was short but impactful. I very much dislike the new focus on killing people. I loved exploring tombs, not murdering dozen of men. Leave the murdering to Assassin's creed and stick to the puzzles and exploring for Tomb Raider.

I actually prefer the previous characterization of Lara, the "larger than life" cocky persona as you described it. She was my role model when I was a kid, she was amazing, strong, sassy, intelligent, and something I had never seen before. She was in a whole different realm than any other female characters in any media I had seen at the time. I loved her, she started my love for ancient history, especially ancient Egypt! The new reboot was an extreme let down for me, I was so hyped for 2013 TR and then I played it and just.... Everything in it felt wrong. Rise of the Tomb Raider was better, but still wrong in many aspects. Shadow of the Tomb Raider was an amazing step up, I think the team being changed had a huge impact on the end result because it felt a lot more true to the Tomb Raider franchise. Unpopular opinion, I fucking loved the Legend trilogy, and I fucking loved Angel of Darkness. I hate how classic Lara is viewed as an "exploited woman" when I've always viewed her as a woman in total control of her sexuality and I've always looked up to her. Anyone who's played through TR1-TR6 should know that there was no exploitation whatsoever. Lara's curves were partially due to the art style which was more like a comic book brought to life hence the impossible proportions, but still - what makes a woman with a voluptuous figure automatically exploited? It was TR7 (Legend) that introduced unlockable bikini outfits and Underworld that offered bikini as a DLC - but still, I fail to see how a strong female character wearing bikini is sexually exploited? This just drives me crazy. If anything I find sassy female characters in control of their sexuality extremely empowering (e.g. Bayonetta). Also the story in the 2013 reboot is hands down the weakest IMO. It's one huge cliche after another and the supporting characters are all boring and dull AF.

I completely agree, I miss the old Lara so much. She was witty, sophisticated, elegant and classy, and more to the point, she was a through and through aristocrat. I wish they would have just let her die after Cronicles, Angel of Darkness was a mess and then Crystal Dynamics came to ruin both Tomb Raider and Lara as a character, turning the franchise into an action series. I still play the old games to this day, and 1 and 4 are my definate favorites, with three not far behind. The solitude, long streches of just exploration and puzzle solving and the lack of Hollywoodesque action simply make them outstanding. The new games focuses way to much on action over puzzles and platforming. Now, I am on the same page as you; the new games are not necessarily bad (I've only played the first one), but they are distinctively not Tomb Raider. I hate reboots, and I hate when they transfer franchises. If franchise protection should have any meaning, it is to guarantee concistency. If your product is so weak it has to piggy back on the name of a classic, you should reconsider making it. Make it able to stand on it's own feet and build it's own name instead. What is the point of using an established name if you won't honor what that entails. A reboot of an origin story is simply disrespectful and spiteful towards those who supported and loved the franchise in question, regardless of the original franchise. And if you are going to make a sequel in a well established and loved franchise, show some respect towards that legacy. Scrapping it in favor of making your own is insanely disrespectful, and at that point the franchise might as well be turned over to public domain, so that people who do love and respect the legacy can have a crack at it. There is no reason to protect a name if that is all it is, the only reason to protect franchises is in order to protect it's legacy.

I remember playing Angel of Darkness on the PC, and absolutely hating the controls. When Legend came out, it was a revelation. Suddenly controlling the character was actually fun. I remember trying to decide between the standard vs the "next gen" settings. Next gen would have moments of brilliance in the world graphics, but Lara looked worse. I always went back to the standard mode. It's still a fantastic game. I played it on modern hardware about a year ago. Anniversary was even better to control. I have underworld, but I haven't had time to play through it yet much. I know I remember wishing I could adjust the camera some. I'm not as big of a fan of Rise of the Tomb Raider (Haven't played Shadow), but I liked 2013 reboot more.

Really great video man, I absolutely loved it. You mention in another comment reply that these types of videos don't do well... I hope that doesn't prevent more long format retrospectives. Obviously it's more than one, but even if just one person is touched by your work, it's worth it - pulling on another person's mind and heart strings is no easy feat and should be cherished. You should be proud, this is the new definitive TR retrospective on KZbin.

She had a cellar under the stairs where she kept her booty. I think the door was on a timer. In TR3 she'd had it converted in to a rather nice thinking parlour, aquarium and library. I seem to remember there was another secret room in TR3 where she had the Dagger of Xian and other artefacts on display as well as a T-Rex trophy head on the wall. I often wondered how she explained that one to the taxidermist. Funnily enough in that game there is a key she finds on the roof of St. Paul's cathedral which serves no purpose whatsoever.

I so miss the older games. I loved watching my dad play the originals when I was a little girl. Legend was the first I played myself, and I realized enjoyed it. I hate the over focus on survival in reboot, and how limited your choices are in terms of what controls you can use. This last game is really pitiful. It could’ve been amazing with the settings and mythology they used. Interesting it’s shallow and incoherent.

She's been shoved aside in favor of the more "grounded" Lara. What I don't think people realize is that Lara was an icon because she could do amazing things and had an air of charisma while doing it. The new Lara is fine to me, but classic just had more presence. Not to say she didn't have problems either, but there's a reason why most fans refer to her when they think of Lara Croft. Crystal Dynamics did accomplish what they wanted, as the only thing the new and old Lara have in common is a name. Whether that's good or bad is up to the individual.

My dad used to play them when my brother and I were little (this would've been when 4 was the newest one). We used to drag chairs from the kitchen so we could watch. I remember always getting super excited about it. Parts freaked me out though. Willard at the end of 3 gave me literal nightmares. I also suck at them and play with walkthroughs, but I still have to give myself pep talks when I know there's a fight coming up. 3 has some creepy parts and 4 is dark and eerie for pretty much the whole game. You ought to finish 2 though. It's very good and is pretty easy on the nerves.
